The wander plugs and sockets are deliveredwith the handgrip not fully tightened ontothe body therefore, the first installation doesnot need any use of a tool.The simple pressure of the blade of ascrewdriver (or another tool) releases thebody.

FAST CONNECTIONThe screwless connections thateliminate the need to strip theconductor insulation; the colourcoded conductor retainers greatlysimplify and speed up the connectionprocess.

The closing is achieved bymeans of a 1/4 turn rotation ofthe handgrip on the body. Thelock is by a stainless-steel insert(spring) and gives particularrigidity and durability to theassembly. A "CLICK" indicateswhen the closing operation iscomplete.

The external cable clamp, with its integralcable-gland and its ring nut, is very easy totight up by hand and does not need the useof a tool.The design prevents accidental unscrewingor loosening due to vibration or mechanicalstresses.

The practicality of the new system, thesimplicity of the PK PratiKa FAST connection,together with the spacious Kaedra enclosures,assure maximum simplicity and flexibility inbuilding up socket enclosures.

The series PK PratiKa from a technicaland functional point of view is perfectlycoherent with the PK series andKaedra enclosure system boosting theimage of complete offer and its design.

The retaining fin on the wanderplugs, also on the wander sockets,allows the hanging of the productto make it always available andtotally visible.

The cap of the IP44 wander socketsis provided with a tab for easyopening during plug insertion.

Discover PK plugs and socketsLow voltagePlugs with phase inversion

Solution for rapid inversion ofphase rotation

The PK plugs with phase inversion provide asafe, rapid solution to electrical connectionproblems in all rotary machines.In fact, they permit a rapid inversion of thepositions of the two pins and the phasesequence and, subsequently, the machinerotation direction, without having to open theplug and change the connections. This isachieved by simply pressing with ascrewdriver on the specific area with a 180°rotation of the contact-gate block clockwiseor counter-clockwise, until total inversion ofthe phases is obtained.

The range includes different models:❑ Wander plugs❑ 90° Wander plugs❑ Wall-mounting plugs❑ Panel-mounting plugs

Product rangeThe PK extra low voltage sockets and plugsensure the non-interchangeability by meansof two reference elements:❑ a guide spline on the socket which

matches with a corresponding nib on theplug, always at a fixed 6 o’clock position

❑ a secondary keyway, also this a spline onthe socket, to which corresponds a nib onthe plug, at different clock positionsaccording to the operating characteristics.

The clock position (h) of the secondarykeyway is checked by observing, with thesocket viewed from the front, the position ofthe nib in relation to the main keyway, alwayspositioned at 6 o’clock, in accordance withthe IEC 309-1 and IEC 309-2 standard.

Sockets with safetytransformersSockets with safety transformers are used topower circuits with a voltage rating of 50Vmaximum, in order to protect people fromdirect and indirect contact, in conformity withIEC364 standards.The units integrate the socket, the powertransformer and the transformer protectionfrom any overloading.They are available in different versions tomeet the needs of the various distributionenvironments:

❑ PK Unika Series, for any tertiary andindustrial plants and, especially, forcombined use with other power systemsinstalled in different ways: one by one,through modular bases or on Kaedrasystem socket enclosures;

❑ PK Isoblock Series, for installations inheavy industry or agriculturalenvironments, where they are exposed toaggressive chemical agents, oils andgrease and frequent jets of water oraccidental shocks.

A complete range in order toguarantee safety, reliabilityand functionality

PK sockets with interlocked switch areavailable in three different ranges of solutionsto meet the various installation and protectionneeds depending on different installationenvironments.

A very versatile range, rich infunctional characteristics, easyinstallation and guaranteeingmaximum safety, and suitablefor the most specificrequirements.

❑ PK Compact: small and compact;❑ PK Unika: highly functional features and

very versatile installation system;❑ PK Isoblock: for installation in high-risk

areas

SafetyIn conformity with IEC 309 standards, all the industrial sockets havea lock or holding mechanism, which keeps the plug firmly locked inthe socket, preventing it from being pulled out involuntarily.Sockets with an interlock switch have been designed to meet thesafety requirements and, in particular, to prevent plug insertion orremoval while the socket is under load.Their interlocking device allows closure of the main switch only whenthe plug is fully inserted in the socket, and when completemechanical and electrical connection has occurred between thesleeves and pins.Plug removal is possible only when the switch is in the ‘off’ position.The use of these interlocked sockets is recommended where there isa risk associated with connecting and disconnecting plugs on load. Inthis way the user has the guarantee that current can only beswitched under optimum safety conditions with the plug correctlyinserted.

Technical guide Industrial type plugs and socketsGeneral information

The catalogue includes a vast range of plugs and socketsdesigned mainly for industrial use, both indoor and outdoor,where the ambient temperature does not normally exceed 40°C.Thanks to the manufacturing characteristics and to the use ofmaterials with superior performance and resistance to chemicaland environmental agents, these devices are widely used also inbuilding sites and in other sectors, like workshops, agricultureand offices.In the case of use in special environments, for example on ships,or in areas with explosion hazards, special characteristics can berequired.

Reference standardsThe standards, from a point of view of dimensions andperformance, for this family of products are defined at aninternational level and included in the European standards:

IEC60309-1EN 60309-1

Plugs and sockets for industrial use.Part 1: General provisions.

IEC 6060309-2EN 60309-2

Plugs and sockets for industrial use.Part 2: Provisions of dimensional interchangeability for plugs andsockets with cylindrical pins and sleeves

DefinitionsThe various applications of plugs and sockets include thefollowing devices:

Plug and socket outlet: Device which permits the connection ofa flexible cable to a power supply installation: it comprises asocket and a plug.

Wander plug: Part which is securely connected, or designed tobe connected, to a power supply flexible cable.

Appliance plug inlet: Device which permits the connection of aflexible cable to an appliance: it comprises a wander socket anda plug inlet.

Plug inlet: Incorporated part fixed, or designed to be fixed, to anappliance.

Operating conditionsThe Standards IEC 60947-1, EN 60947-1, “Low voltageswitchgear and controlgear: General rules”, define the normaloperating conditions for electrical and electronic devices. Suchstandards are generally applicable to devices operating withinthe voltage limit of up to 1,000V for alternated current or 1,500Vfor direct current, unless otherwise required by the specificproduct standard.

Ambient temperatureMaximum temperature: +40°C with average temperature during24 hours not exceeding +35°C;lower temperature limit: -5°C.

AltitudeUp to 2,000 m a.s.l.

Atmospheric conditionsHumidityRelative humidity not exceeding 50% with temperature of +40°C.A higher relative humidity is allowed with a lower temperature;for example, 90% with +20°C (see drawing).

Level of environmental pollutionThe following levels of pollution are considered for electrical andelectronic devices:

level 1there is no pollution or there may be dry non-conductive pollution;

level 2normally the devices can be used in the presence of non-conductive polluting substances; occasionally there may betemporary conductivity caused by condensation;

level 3presence of conductive pollution or dry non-conductive pollution,which become conductive with condensation;

level 4the pollution causes persistent and high conductivity; suchpollution is caused for example by conductive dust, rain or snow.

The pollution level is a conventional number based on the amount of conductive or hygroscopicdust, ionised gas or salts, on the relative humidity and on the frequency which causes absorptionor condensation of humidity, a phenomenon which involves a reduction of dielectric strength and/orsurface resistivity. The pollution level referred to is the one occurring in the immediate vicinity tothe air and surface between elements with different potential.

The products included in this catalogue can be used also in environments with particularly severeconditions. Our Technical Department can be contacted for any further information.

The normal pollution level is:

Technical guide Industrial type plugs and socketsGeneral information

Principal provisionsThe standards cover the use of plugs and sockets with eitheralternate current, frequency of up to 500Hz, or direct current,divided into two main classes:

■ extra-low voltage plugs and sockets, with operating voltage ofup to 50V.

■ low voltage plugs and sockets, with operating voltage of 50Vto 690V.

The standards cover rated currents of 16 and 32A with 2P and3P configurations for extra-low voltage, and rated currents of 16,32, 63 and 125A with 2P+ , 3P+ and 3P+N+ for lowvoltage.

There is a specific model for each use, with different ratedcharacteristics of voltage, frequency, polarity and application,incorporating safety hindrances which make it impossible toinsert any plug in a socket which is not the exact correspondingtype.Non-interchangeability is ensured by compliance with thedifferent standardised dimension tables which indicate differentground contact positions in relation to a standard fixed referenceof the connection.

Low voltage versions > 50V

In the low voltage versions non-interchangeability is ensured bymeans of two elements:

■ a guide spline on the socket which matches with acorresponding nib on the plug.

■ a ground contact larger than the other contacts, in a differentclock position according to the rated operating characteristics.

The clock position (h) of the ground contact is checked byobserving, with the socket viewed from the front, the position ofthe ground contact in relation to the main keyway (guide spline),always positioned at 6 o’clock.

Extra low voltage versions <50V

Also for these versions, with no ground contact, non-interchangeability is ensured by means of two referenceelements:■ a guide spline on the socket which matches with a

corresponding nib on the plug, always at a fixed 6 o’clockposition.

■ a secondary keyway, also this a spline on the socket to whichcorresponds a nib on the plug, at different clock positionsaccording to the operating characteristics.

The clock position (h) of the secondary keyway is checked byobserving, with the socket viewed from the front, the position ofthe nib in relation to the main keyway, always positioned at 6o’clock.

Coded coloursFor easy identification of the operating voltage, the standardindicates conventional coded colours which may involve theentire device or only one part (e.g., lift cover, ring, etc.)

Rated operating Colour (1)voltage V

from 40 to 50 white

from 100 to 130 yellow

from 200 to 250 blue

from 500 to 690 black

1) : For a frequency above 60Hz and up to and including 500Hz,the green colour can be used, if necessary, in conjunction withthe colour of the rated operating voltage.

Clock referenceThe range comprises all versions covered by the standards,including the more specific ones.Although the catalogue covers only some standard models, it ispossible to have all the different clock positions specified by thestandard; the following are some of the positions for this range:

Technical guide Technical dataDegree of protection

Degree of protectionThe standard classifies and codifies a great number of externalinfluences to which an electrical system may be subjected:presence of water, solid objects, risk of impacts, vibrations,presence of corrosive substances, etc.These situations can affect electrical components with a variableintensity depending on the characteristics of the system:presence of water, for example, can be either some drops ofwater falling or total immersion.

Degree of protection IPThe standard IEC 60529 (EN 60529) indicates, by means of theIP code, the degree of protection for electrical devices againstaccess to energised parts and against the entry of water and offoreign solid objects.This standard does not consider the protection against the risk ofexplosion or environmental situations like humidity, corrosivevapours, moulds or insects.The IP code is composed of 2 characteristic digits and can beexpanded by an additional letter if the protection of personsagainst access to energised parts is greater than the oneindicated by the first digit.Another supplementary letter indicates additional information onthe protection of material.The table on Page 80 indicates the classification criteria of the IPcode.

RemarksThe degree of protection IP must always be read digit by digitand not as a whole. For example, an enclosure with a degree ofprotection IP 31 is suitable for an environment that requires atleast a degree of protection IP 21. In this case a device withdegree of protection IP 30 cannot be used.Considering the fact that the presence of water on devices(panels) has in any event a negative effect (infiltration, corrosion,etc.), it will be advisable that all devices installed outdoor befitted with a protective roof, and possibly with side screens.The degree of protection indicated by the manufacturer is ingeneral applicable to the conditions indicated in the catalogue.However, only adequate assembly, installation and maintenancewill guarantee the original degree of protection.

Degree of protection againstmechanical impacts IKThe standard EN 50102 defines the degree of protection againstmechanical impacts indicated with the letters IK, followed by anumber. The following table indicates the impact values in joulescorresponding to each code.
