La notte dell’Epifania, in molte parti d’Italia, i bambini aspettano regali.

Prima di andare a letto, mettono un calzino vicino al camino o fuori dalla finestrae quando si alzano lo trovano pieno di piccoli regali e dolci, se durante l’annosono stati buoni; se invece sono stati cattivi lo trovano pieno di carbone.

Chi porta queste cose? La Befana; un personaggio mitico che sembra una bruttavecchia che vola su una scopa per il cielo e va da tetto in tetto con un gran saccopieno di regali sulle spalle. Quando i bambini dormono la Befana scende giù dalcamino in silenzio, perchè nessuno deve vederla, e riempie le calze.

La Befana è una figura popolare molto amata dai ragazzi italiani. Il suo nomeviene dalla parola greca “ epiphaneia” che vuol dire “manifestazione della divinitàattraverso chiari segni.” Con il passare del tempo, attraverso il latino, siamoarrivati a “ Epifania” ed anche “ Befania.”

Oggi per i Cristiani, l’Epifania è la festa che ricorda la visita dei Re Magi a GesùBambino nella grotta di Betlemme; ma per i bambini il sei gennaio è soprattutto lafesta della Befana.

Read the following story, and answer in ENGLISH, the questions that follow.

Una bella mattina di giugno, un maestro di scuola è andato a trovare il SignorBianchi, un vecchio alunno suo, che abitava in una villa a pochi chilometri daGenova.

Il Signor Bianchi gli ha offerto un buon pranzo, e dopo lo ha condotto in giardinodove gli ha mostrato una grande quantità di fiori: rose, garofani, gerani e gigli.

In fondo al giardino vi era un magnifico orto, con gli alberi pieni di frutta.

“Pare che quest’anno avremo una buonissima raccolta,” ha detto il Signor Bianchial maestro. “Solo quell’albero, vicino al muro, non produce più di dieci o dodicifichi. Quando saranno maturi gliene manderò un paio.”

Qualche settimana dopo il signor Bianchi ha preso due dei fichi e ha chiesto alfiglio adolescente e non troppo intelligente del giardinaio, di portarli al vecchiomaestro con la sua Vespa.

Era una giornata calda, e per strada il giovane, che aveva sete, ha mangiato unodei fichi.

Quando è arrivato dal maestro con il solo fico, il maestro, sapendo che cidovevano esserne due, ha detto sorpreso, “E l’altro fico dov’è?”

“ Mi dispiace, ma l’ho mangiato,” ha risposto il giovane.

“ Ma come hai fatto a mangiare un fico che dovevi portare a me?”

“ Ho fatto così,” ha detto il giovane e prendendo l’altro fico ha mangiato anchequello.

vi scrivo questa breve lettera da Nuova York dopo una settimana. Non ho avuto molto tempo; qui c’ètanto da fare. Sto con una famiglia americana molto gentile ed ho conosciuto molti nuovi amici. Faabbastanza caldo. Ieri sono andato alla spiaggia con gli amici ed ho preso troppo sole. Come statevoi? Che tempo fa lì?
