ABOUT US

The ShopRite Nutmeg State Games is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to providing a forum that initiates and encourages camaraderie between different ages, socioeconomic and cultural groups through athletic competition and the Olympic spirit. The event encourages in the development of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle in its participants and promotes positive healthy activities for the participants, their families and the communities where they live.

The ShopRite Nutmeg State Games is the largest amateur multi sport Olympic-style sporting event in Connecticut and is now in its 24th year of uniting Connecticut’s residents in the common bond of amateur sport and Olympic spirit. This event is recognized by the US Olympic Committee and is a member in good standing of the National Congress of State Games. The “Games” will be hosted by the City of New Britain in 2012. Competitions will take place in the City of New Britain, Berlin, West Hartford and around the state of Connecticut at top city, town, college and high school venues. Since the inception of the “Games” in 1989, more than 125,000 amateur athletes have participated in the “Games”. More than 6,000 participants and over 15,000 spectators will take part in the 2012 ShopRite Nutmeg State Games representing every one of the 169 cities and towns in the State of Connecticut. Participants range between the ages of 8 and 18.

NUTMEG STATE GAMES HISTORY:

The “ Games” began in 1989 as an idea fostered by William G. Mudano Sr. (Retired), and supported by Connecticut legislators. The first competition took place at Eastern Connecticut State University and included 1,200 participants, several hundred volunteers and several thousand spectators made up largely of friends and relatives of the athletes. Since those humble beginnings, the Games have grown dramatically and have evolved into the largest amateur athletic competition in the State of Connecticut. Since the inception of the “Games” more than 125,000 amateur athletes have participated. While grassroots participation is a focal point, there have been a number of participants who have competed in professional sports or as a member of the USA Olympic team, not to mention thousands of athletes who have enjoyed successful college careers. NBA All-Star Vin Baker, and former UCONN great and WNBA star, Jennifer Rizzotti got their starts in the “Games.” Today, the Nutmeg State Games is the largest multi-sport, Olympic style, amateur competition in the State of Connecticut Previous Host Cities & Colleges:

OLYMPIC MODELFew events in Connecticut embody the spirit and values of amateur athletics like the Nutmeg State Games. Team sports are configured regionally which attempt to eradicate town rivalries and promote collaborations among participants. Inner city and suburban participants are merged together and opponents become teammates and friends. SPORTSMANSHIPPoor sportsmanship in youth sports jeopardizes the core values and benefits of amateur athletics. The “Games” strives to eliminate improper actions of parents, coaches and athletes by emphasizing sportsmanship in all events through a program that recognizes and rewards positive behavior. AFFORDABILITYWhile the “Games” are similar in nature to other events that provide valuable exposure to college coaches, a unique feature is the significantly lower cost for the participants. The average Entry Fee is $25.00 per participant and hasn’t changed since the “Games” inception in 1989 ATTRACTIVEThe Nutmeg State Games continue to thrive despite the numerous sport and amusement alternatives available to youth today. The “Games” remain a must-attend event because it’s an honor and great opportunity to be a part of the high level of competition. SUSTAINABILITYThe “Games” have remained viable for twenty-three years in good and bad economic times due to strong leadership from its Board of Directors, an experienced and dedicated staff and carefully developed relationships with athletes, facilities, athletic administrators and officials across Connecticut. VOLUNTEERISMEach year 1,500 volunteers come together to help unite Connecticut through amateur athletics. Volunteers range from coaches, referees, officials, sport coordinators, interns, and medical staff members. Our substantial volunteer support from numerous organizations allows more funds to be spent on the athletes.

The Nutmeg State Games would like to give a round of applause to some exceptional individuals to show our appreciation for their participation, The Nutmeg State Games Athlete of the Year Award puts a spotlight on the athletes that rise to the top, excel in their events, overcome great hardships and display tremendous sportsmanship. Jonathan Pelletier - 2011 Male Athlete of the Year

Jonathan has been very active in sports since 2005 and has earned numerous medals as a youth wrestler. He aspires to be a United States Marine and believes in being the best he can be in everything he does. Jonathan is involved in baseball, wrestling and archery. Playing both individual and team sports are an excellent example of his versatility in athletics. He believes that the skills learned in both wrestling and archery will benefit him when he becomes a Marine.

Jonathan competed in the 2011 Nutmeg State Games in both Archery and Wrestling. Yet again Jonathan had continued success by obtaining a gold medal for archery in the Cadet Reserve division and earned a bronze medal for wrestling in the intermediate division. Jonathan is a stand out individual who aspires to be the best in everything he does even with a highly demanding lifestyle.

Marissa Silverman - 2011 Female Athlete of the Year

Marissa started playing recreational basketball in her town until she was “drafted” by the travel coach in 6th grade. In 7th grade she played on an AAU development team with the CT Spirit in addition to travel basketball. Before freshman year of High School, Marissa went to watch a JV game to see what it would hold. While at the game, a parent of a JV player asked her what she was doing there. She responded that she wanted to make the JV team in the fall. The parent responded by saying that it was nice that she wanted to reach for the stars. In result Marissa took what the parent told her, wrote it down, and taped it to her bedroom wall. She used this as motivation and inspiration to help her do better and to help her reach her goals. That fall, Marissa was the first in her school in almost 30 years to make the girls varsity basketball team as a freshman.

She is an excellent candidate for Athlete of the Year as her commitment to being a true athlete represents the spirit of amateur athletics and the State Games movement. She lives her life as we all should: with inspiration, self motivation, and a positive attitude.

Jay Creel - 2011 Coach of the Year

Jay Creel began coaching as an assistant football coach at his alma mater Simsbury High School in the early 90’s. Under the tutelage of Coach Joe Grace, Jay learned to organize, evaluate and execute personnel strategies, game plans and make tactical decisions that would guide him in coaching sports and in life. Jay began playing hockey at the age of 18. Be it ice, dek, or inline hockey, his exploits have carried him as far north as Canada and as far south as Florida. However, his real passion had been and continues to be in the areas of program development and player

coaching.

In 2011, the Junior FireAnts have expanded their scope to include participation in the Nutmeg Games Ice Hockey Tournament with teams in the Squirt division (Gold Medal) and the Midget division (Silver Medal). Jay hopes to continue to help hockey grow, both inline and ice as well as develop young players for years to come.

The 2012 ShopRite Nutmeg State Games Recognizes the City of New Britain, Town of Berlin and the Town West Hartford for their continued support and generous contributions of their town’s outstanding park facilities for the “Games”! SPECIAL THANKS TO:
