The Oral Health Convention Planning Committee:

As a Committee, we look forward to building a better Convention each year. We hear the members as they outline the types of CEC they require and work to accommodate such demands. This year we offer courses in: Radiation Protection, Treating the Oral Cancer Patient, CPR Training and much more. This is the last year in your three-year cycle. The Convention provides an opportunity to earn up to 18 points per year.

As our numbers have increased, the demand for the CE offerings has also grown. Therefore to stay within the Fire Marshall’s rules, there is a maximum capacity for some courses, so please register early. The cut-off date is May 23rd, 2014. There will be a late administration fee of $25.00 applied to all registrations received after May 23rd, 2014.

The trade show floor has expanded significantly over the years. However, there are still areas that we would like to cover that are not currently on the floor. If there are exhibitors that you would like to see attending our OHC, please let us know and we will work to bring them in.

THuRSDAY, JuNE 5TH 9:00 AM - 12:00 PMSpeaker: Dr. David goodyear

Description of course:

X-ray examinations have gained popularity in the treatment, planning, and monitoring of oral health conditions. Because of their physical properties, X-rays are able to penetrate through bony structures and provide variations in image contrast related to density variations in the bony material. In order to provide more information about the internal structure of teeth and various conditions affecting them, a variety of 2D and 3D techniques are currently used in dental radiography. From intraoral X-rays to 3D cone beam CT, each technique has its clinical benefits, however a major disadvantages of using X-rays is their ionizing nature. X-rays interact with matter through a variety of modes including photoelectric effect and Compton scattering. Both interactions lead to the deposition of radiation dose by liberating bound electrons causing the formation of free radicals. In living tissue, the liberation of bound electrons can lead to broken covalent bonds within DNA. Sometimes these bonds are repaired, however, in some instances the bonds are not repaired and may lead to the activation of oncogenes. To ensure minimal risk, minimal radiation exposures should be used under clinical indications that warrant X-ray usage. Safe practices should be used during exposures to minimize long term dose accumulation in personnel controlling the equipment as well. X-ray rooms with well designed shielding and placement of X-ray machines also provides a level of safety. ultimately, a good radiation safety program, established safety practices, regular quality assurance, and maintenance will ensure that doses to patients and personnel are as low as reasonably achievable.

The dental hygienists president’s dinner was recently changed to NL Dental Hygienists Recognition Dinner to more closely describe the intention for its initiation in 2012. The evening will consist of a social hour, followed by a delicious buffet-style meal and inspiring guest speakers. With this night being dedicated to all NLDHA members, it is an opportunity to engage yourself in peer communication, socialization, marketing, education or just a night out with like-minded individuals that share similar passions. As members of the NLDHA, you are encouraged to attend this dinner as a thank you to those members that are currently volunteering their time (or have in the past) to help your profession advance and help you grow as a professional. The NLDHA would like to thank its volunteer members for their generosity, and we hope to see you this June in Corner Brook for the third annual dinner.

cost per person: $50.85

The NLDAA would like to invite all our members to a social to catch up with everyone we haven’t seen since last year. So, let’s get together and make a few more memories. We hope to see all our members making their way out to Corner Brook and this event this year.
