Symbiosis 1971- Passion & Excellence
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. But it involves deliberation and much hesitation. The Symbiosis journey however began with a surge of enthusiasm spurred on by an incident that, in itself, makes a poignant tale. It is an inspiring tale and in the words of the founder of Symbiosis, Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, it says:
"It was afternoon on a hot day. I was standing near a window of my house overlooking the first hostel block, of which I was a rector. A strange thing happened. A girl walked up to the window of the boy's hostel room, quickly handed over something and disappeared. My curiosity was aroused and I kept watching the girl walking up to the window day after day and suspected, like any other rector would, that an affair was afoot.
So one day, I made up my mind and walked up to the door and knocked. When the door opened, I saw a Mauritian student lying in bed. His face was pale and his eyes seemed to have sunken low.
I was puzzled!!
When I turned to the boy for an explanation, he said, "Sir, I have an attack of jaundice and I'm feeling extremely weak. I cannot stand up, nor walk a few
steps. A girl from my country brings me food. However, since ladies are not allowed to enter the boy's hostel, she hands over the lunch box through the window."
I was stunned, after all, it wasn't the type of 'affair' I had expected. I was very much pained and decided something had to be done about this. That was the instance! A golden moment! "Symbiosis was born".
Symbiosis is a term in life science, meaning 'living together of two different organisms for the benefit of each other. Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, himself a professor of botany, thought this name apt for the institution.
Thus the institution was founded to alleviate the problems faced by foreign students coming to India. At the time, these problems included- accommodation, meals, medical care, guidance, coaching, information about the city etc.
Symbiosis has come a long way since then. Today it is a home to students from more than 85 different countries. These students are offered the best learning resources, industry, exposure, a strong International Students' Alumni network, a global recognition and above all, a truly enriching India experience.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
- William Butler Yeats
Symbiosis International University is one of the leading institutions in our country. It has been a pioneer in the field of higher education, encompassing multifarious arenas of study under its vast umbrella. Each graduate of Symbiosis Law School, Pune has been inculcated with the belief that knowledge comes from thinking clearly as well as appreciating life for its virtues. The same is affirmed from the fact that every student of Symbiosis Law School, Pune has undergone a rigorous admission procedure, be it the five year programme, the three year programme or the Master's course.
The standards achieved by the institute are a product of the symbiotic relationship between the students and the faculty, which maintains a healthy flow of knowledge from every channel available. This institute was created with the sound principle that a strong legal acumen along with practical experience is the way to equip our students. It follows the best practices from the across the globe, thus generating unique ideas and keen minds.
The result from these efforts is already visible through our illustrious alumni who have transformed their legal knowledge and skills into diverse career paths. By finding their way to be sitting judges of various High Courts and the subordinate judiciary throughout the nation, members of governmental commissions, civil servants and founders of legal institutions, they have not only become a testimony to the holistic education provided at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, but have also altered the landscape of law in India and beyond for the better.
With every batch of students that has honed their abilities under the aegis of Symbiosis Law School, Pune, the legacy is rejuvenated as they mark their paths with progress. I wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.
Dr. S. B. MujumdarChancellor, Symbiosis International University
From the Chancellor's Desk
02
Symbiosis Law School, Pune is a unique institute of professional learning and academic excellence. Mere knowledge of law in today's dynamic and non-linear legal world is simply not sufficient enough to survive on. A comprehensive understanding of the legal systems, the ability to compare and contrast domestic laws with their international counterparts and in-depth knowledge of other related sciences is essential.
In the endeavour of fulfilling the dreams of our founder Chancellor and visionary Dr. S.B Mujumdar, Symbiosis Law School, Pune is dedicated to its responsibility of creating a global knowledge disseminating hub transgressing national and International borders and territories thereby transforming every student into a "responsible human" by igniting the "cause of justice" in their minds, finally metamorphosing them into excellent lawyers.
The student of today is a global citizen, one who is innovative, imaginative and unafraid to speak her or his own mind. During their tenure at the institute, the students immerse themselves in various activities like moot-court competitions, in-house publications and student-led committees and cells from the initial steps into their respective programmes. The 'core values' of this Institute are derived from its engagements in high quality research and excellent innovative teaching methods merged with experiential learning in the form of 'Rolling Internship' with top tier law firms and companies, workshops by distinguished International faculty and experts and students exchange programmes which exposes them to International legal environment.
The bright and youthful minds of the present batch are a true representation of the aforementioned qualities. The eagerness to tackle hurdles through determination and perseverance fills us with pride and the hope that they shall carry and find a place of their own in the legal arena.

It has been a perpetuating motto of the Symbiosis Family to promote 'international understanding through quality education.' The various disciplines taught across seven faculties under the aegis of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) portray the ideals of personal learning, which ensures holistic development and the subsequent pool of enigmatic and talented youth ready to take on every challenge.
With the concept of internationalization in our minds, enunciated by our traditional values culminating into 'Vasudhaiv Kutumbakan,' the aim of Symbiosis International is to ceaselessly improve in order to create suitable conditions needed for a dynamic professional world. However, with the fast pace of the world, it has become ever so essential for us to also focus on inculcating our students with the core values of ethics and justice, thus, unifying culture beliefs and modern approaches into an all-encompassing academic programme.
At Symbiosis Law School, Pune, each student has developes in order to strive for every zenith one can possibly reach in the legal arena. It is a haven of knowledge and professionalism. The intensive course provides students with ample opportunities to foster a deeper understanding of the law, both theoretically and practically. The flexible course also lets the young minds ponder on issues that interest them, which also serves the purpose of furthering the goal of generating greater sensitivity and empathy.
As each batch of Symbiosis Law School, Pune, moves into the judicial or corporate sphere, it also carries along the longstanding ideals of the institute. The symbiotic relationship not only leaves the institute enriched with a fresh perspective, but also creates a more transparent workforce. It is our sincere hope that with this batch as well, our relationship with the legal world will be further vitalized.

05
The creation of Symbiosis Law School, Pune, as a keen community which would strive for not only academic excellence but more importantly to nurture individuals who are willing to better the world with their enhanced skills, has been a successful venture. With a hard-working student body and dedicated faculty, the institution has built nest of teeming legal minds. The labours of a vibrant alumni and an irreplaceable staff contributes to each effort that Symbiosis undertakes to create an environment that supports notions of justice and universal welfare.
The spirit of innovation and sustainable development runs through the veins of SLS, Pune, and the ideals of a globalised development innate in the very vision of the institute has led to each batch forming a unique community of intense intellectual exchange. The dynamic nature of the workforce in every avenue of law is reflected in the manner our curriculum transforms in order to adapt for the morphing career paths that each member of the SLS family shall tread on. It has been this understanding of the world's transient nature that has led our alumni to earn accolades in the legal field, government, non-profit organisations and corporate industries.
While our students walk through the rigorous courses handpicked for each batch, they learn to not only be good lawyers but better humans who find contentment in the field of law, one that has aimed at bettering lives of the unfortunate. While rankings are mere numbers, it creates an impetus within us to constantly strive for what the institute stands; globalised understanding and best legal practices. Thus, the students of the 2019 batch are more than well-prepared to take on the tasks and challenges the world has to offer and create another legacy for both Symbiosis Law School, Pune, and themselves.
My best wishes lie with the batch of 2019.
Dr. Shashikala GurpurDirector, Symbiosis Law School, Pune

International Cell as a constituent of Symbiosis Law School, under the guidance of our Director Dr. Shashikala Gurpur has a growing and vibrant community of international faculty and students who come to teach and learn from around the world. They represent over 15 countries across four cohorts of not only legal programs but others like personality development etc. Events like The International Association of Law Schools conference, European Union Legal Studies, and several lecture series are conducted by the International Cell.
Symbiosis associated itself with Herbert Smith Freehills, they are an international law firm co-headquartered in London, United Kingdom and Sydney, Australia. The firm organized a HSF-Oxford lecture at Symbiosis Law School, Pune, which happens to be the only college that is not a National Law University to have hosted this event. The lectures were given by Chris Parsons, Chairman, India practice, Herbert Smith Freehills, and Prof. Timothy Endicott, Professor of Legal Philosophy, Oxford University.
International Cell strives to give the students the best of opportunities, immersing them in an inclusive environment that makes them feel at different parts of the world by a learning experience through International Faculty. International Cell also acts as a bridge between the college and the International Students and in Symbiosis Law School the academic rigour, extracurricular activities, residential life allows International students to learn, engage, connect, and build lasting relationships and memories.

At Symbiosis Law School, Pune mooting is considered to be a prerequisite for every student towards his/her legal career since it provides the closest analogy to the functioning of a courtroom. The way one is to present herself/himself in a courtroom is based on etiquettes that have already been imparted to the students via the Student Bar Association. Thus, encouragement towards mooting is of key importance. This we ensure by introducing the Novice Moot Elimination (NME) for the first year students, to select them for State Level Mooting Competitions. Prior to the NME, the SBA organizes various workshops, mooting demonstrations, and interactive sessions by talented mooters from the previous batches so that the first year students can familiarize themselves with the procedures of a courtroom.
The SBA ensures that the mooting experience expands over a wide array of legal scenarios. Thus the SBA conducts an Internal Client Counseling Elimination round that determines the eligibility of students that can be selected for client counseling and negotiation competitions. Further, challenger/elimination rounds are organized for international competitions such as Stetson Environment Moot, Oxford Price Media Moot, Jessup Moot, Leiden Serin Moot, Vis Arbitration, ELSA Moot, Henry Dunant Moot and the International Criminal Court Moot.

It comprises of a President and four Vice Presidents who oversee the functioning of the seven following committees, they being, the Alumni and Networking Committee, Extra-Curricular and Co-Curricular Committee, P.R., Media and Website Committee, Student Welfare Committee, Academic and Research Committee, Program Coordination and Support Committee, and the Regulatory Audit and Budget Committee.
All members of the committees strive throughout the year to ensure every minute detail of the college is given due importance. They are the role models of the college who come together as the Student Advisory Board, a key component to securing the incontestable heights and accolades achieved by the student community and Symbiosis Law School, Pune, as a whole.
Apart from this, the SAB is responsible for organizing a spectrum of student-led initiatives like:

The intra-college fest, SYMPTOMS, is the primary means of discovering extra-curricular talent among the batches of Symbiosis Law School, Pune, especially for the first years. Additionally, it creates a good rapport with the seniors and serves as an ice-breaker between the students. SYMPTOMS is the curtain raiser for Symbiosis Law School, Pune's annual cultural fest, SYMBHAV. The fest has wide array of opportunities to showcase talents in the form of competitions like face painting, photography, chess, caroms, solo-singing, solo-dance, debate, and many others.
Symbhav saw its tenth edition take place in the campus of Symbiosis Law School, Pune. Year after year, Symbhav keeps surpassing itself and this year was no different. The theme for this Symbhav was Global Village to embrace the array of varied cultural diversities, rationalities, societies, stances and mellow out despite the shackles that we've created for ourselves.
The fest, inaugurated by Dr Devenra Fadnavis, witnessedseveral new events being introduced and some of the biggest names in the country come in for the Pro-Nites, the most memorable of which was the brilliant performance given by Farhan Akhtar.
