Placer County SELPA Professional Learning Opportunities
2020-2021
The Placer County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) provides a range of professional learning opportunities to staff across the region. Each year the SELPA solicits the input of its constituent local education agencies (LEAs) to determine specific needs and areas of interest for training. The SELPA seeks to identify professional learning opportunities that are comprehensive and meet the needs of our local region. These regional trainings are updated annually and throughout the school year to respond to current challenges and timely topics for educators. The flyers for the 2020/2021 school year included in this catalog are for the SELPA’s regional professional learning opportunities. These opportunities take place at various PCOE locations or are provided virtually. The flyers include a summary of each topic, information on the date, time, and format or location of the training, and the link for registration. The registration link includes the flyer along with the objectives for each workshop. Health officials have reiterated that COVID-19 is expected to remain present in our community for the foreseeable future. As a result, please keep in mind, the format of some of these workshops may change to ensure the health and safety of students, staff and our school communities. In addition to the regional offerings, education agencies and programs may request SELPA provided trainings to be offered at their sites. This option allows for a professional learning opportunity that is tailored to a particular school site or district and promotes facilitating a local learning community in implementing new skills and practices. Site-based trainings may be requested and coordinated via the SELPA Support Coordinator or through each district’s SELPA Program Specialist.

Creating Classrooms that Provide a Rigorous Standards-based Education for All Students Using UDL and MTSS
Practices
For centuries, schools worked well for those students who arrived ready to learn. When students struggled, they were often labeled as disabled - yet research is
now clear that it's not students, but our systems, that are disabled. Inclusive practices challenge education systems of the past by embracing student variability
and eliminating barriers to learning. Multi-tiered
systems of support build upon those practices by addressing systemic barriers that prevent our educators from challenging and supporting all
learners. During this session, we will dive into how we
can create systems and classrooms that provide a rigorous standards-based education where all
students can thrive and succeed.

Every Educator is a Special Educator:
Attendees will deepen their knowledge of inclusion and inclusive practices, specifically, universal design for learning (UDL) principles as they relate to equity, access and valuing the variability of all students. The presentation will teach educational systems to recognize and be equipped to mitigate potential organization-wide barriers to implementation of inclusive practices and teach educators to understand the connections between grade-level aligned standards, accessible instruction and reasonably calculated IEP construction resulting in expert learners. An emphasis will be placed on connecting parents/guardians as partners in the development of inclusive least restrictive environment (LRE)
determination through the IEP process.

Pattern of strengths and weaknesses (PSW) is Placer County’s chosen method of determining eligibility for special education as a student
with a learning disability. Each psychologist in the county is at a different level of comfort and expertise with using PSW. This
professional learning community (PLC) is a way for all levels of PSW users to come together, learn from each other and problem solve and collaborate. Experts and novices alike will learn from each other and
create a network of support regarding using PSW to determine eligibility.
This PLC is hosted by a Placer County Program Specialist but is a collaborative effort between members to determine the group’s
needs and outcomes.
