Placerville City Hall, a two-story brick building built in 1860,originally housed the Confidence Engine Company #1.

The brigade started out in 1857 as the Mountaineer Engine Company, but after buying a used engine called the Confidence and finding theycouldnt remove its engraved name, they decided to change their nameto match the engine. The Placerville City Hall has occupied the buildingsince 1902.

The Jane Stuart Building was built in 1862 by immigrant Jane Stuart, who raised the money for its construction by driving a herd of horsesacross the plains and selling them to a horse dealer. The two-story building is faced with a wooden balcony and stands next

John McFarland Pearson, a Scotsman, arrived inPlacerville during the early 1850s and built the lowerportion of this building in 1859, with walls twenty-two

inches thick. Pearson was an Ice Merchant. He wouldcut ice from mountain lakes, haul them into town byhorse and wagon, and then sell the blocks to variousneeders of ice. He then branched out into the sodabusiness, producing soda water, cream soda, and

syrups which he sold to the townsfolk. Pearsons sonsadded the brick second story in 1897 for use as abottling room. Several interesting features areincorporated into this unique structure. Undergroundrooms, mine tunnels used to store ice and soda, iron

doors which help support part of the upper floor, and awater driven elevator which once transported the heavycases of soda from the bottling room to the storageareas all combine to create one of the most unusualbuildings of the Gold Rush.
