Dear Prime Minister,
ogether, we arm our support or the national protection o Australias uniqueenvironment our rees, orests, wetlands, bushland, oceans and wildlie. Our national environmental law gives the Federal Government the power andresponsibility to decide whether developments that could threaten nationallysignicant environmental assets should go ahead.
We support the Federal Governments right to intervene even when projectshave been approved by state governments. As a result o past Commonwealth interventions, iconic places, such as theAlpine National Park, the Great Barrier Ree and the Franklin River, have beensaved rom destructive development proposals that have had the support o stategovernments.
Currently, the Federal Government is planning to hand this power over to stategovernments, winding back environmental protection in Australia by decades.
Tere is no system o standards which would be efective enough to justiyhanding over these crucial approval powers.
We urge the Commonwealth to hold on to its power to protect the places andwildlie Australians love.
Sincerely,
