Mindy Stepp says she started working with Sedalia Habitat for Hu- manity four years ago as a means of learning prop- erty maintenance and building trade skills to help her keep up her own rental properties. “Someone suggested it would be a good way to work with contractors and seasoned construction guys,” Stepp said. A former president of the Sedalia Landlord’s Association, she now serves as the president of the board for Sedalia Habitat, a Christian-based volunteer organization which builds affordable homes for qualified low- income families and indi- viduals. While learning a few trade skills may have motivated Stepp in the beginning, the feeling of “building something that lasts for someone” soon took over. “I was hooked after my first build. It is such an emotional thing, just to see the look on the faces of people when you turn over the keys to their own home. It is a feeling like nothing else,” Stepp said. Since the Sedalia chap- ter of the organization opened in 1988, volun- teers have built 25 homes and are currently com- pleting work on their next project at a home along East Tower Street. After that, the group will be re- habbing a home donated to the organization by the estate of its late owner. “This is my first rehab and I am excited to see how it turns out,” Stepp said. In addition to her role as president, Stepp also serves as the chairwoman of the group’s fundraising committee. She said bake sales, financial and in- kind donations and other fundraisers help the group secure the roughly $60,000 it takes to com- plete a project. As part of that role, Stepp oversees an ongo- ing garage sale the group launched this spring, which is held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday at the Ped- dler’s Post, at 24587 state Route O about one mile north of U.S. Highway 50, east of Sedalia. Sale items, which in- clude plumbing and painting supplies, door hardware, caulk, silicone, light fixtures and ceiling fans, all come as donated items left over from con- struction projects. Stepp said items are priced lower than their retail value “so we can use the donated items to help people that don’t neces- sarily qualify for a home.” “Everything costs less than it would in the store, and if someone really needs an item I am will- ing to negotiate,” Stepp said. Space for the sale at Peddler’s Post was do- nated by the business’ owner and Stepp’s friend, Brenda Sprinkle. “I have just been asso- ciated with it through her for the last couple of years. I haven’t been out to help build, but I care about what they are doing and this seemed like a way to help,” Sprinkle said. Stepp said community support like that of Sprin- kle is essential to helping Sedalia Habitat continue its mission. “What Habitat does would be impossible without volunteers and community support,” Stepp said. “You can give to other charities, but Habitat makes something tangible. People can see the home going up. I think that makes a differ- ence.” She's in rehab — the building kind — and she's proud of it By Dennis Rich

Q: I am so happy "HardcorePawn" has returned for a fourthseason. Will it be back for a fifth,or is it too early to tell? -- DirkS., via e-mailA: TruTV's breakout hit, which

centers on one of the world'slargest pawn shops, had such ter-rific premiere ratings for SeasonFour that the network has alreadyrenewed it for another 13-episodeseason, which is slated to beginlater this year.

***Q: I was sad when Thad

Luckinbill left "The Young andThe Restless" last year, so youcan imagine how happy I was tosee him on the CW's "Nikita."Will his character be back forSeason Two? -- Charlene, via e-mailA: Thad, who you also can see

this month in Hallmark Channel's"Keeping Up With the Randalls,"gave me the scoop: "I think that'syet to be determined. They werehonest about it and told me thatthey weren't sure exactly what todo with it, so that is why they leftit open. It's like anything, I think ifthe story's right and it matches upto bring him back, then that wouldbe great. I would love it. If it does-

n't, it doesn't."I think it would be a good

twist if they decided to bring himback. It was really a fun group towork with and a really cool show.I love how stylized that show is. Ithink that was what I was most im-pressed with. Not just the way theyshoot, but the way it looks. It's justa really pretty show."

***Q: I recently found out that

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weiszwere dating, and now I hearthey've married! Is that true? --Hannah D., DetroitA: That sound you just heard

was the collective sigh of millionsof women worldwide who would-n't have minded becoming Mrs.James Bond themselves one day. Itis true: Daniel and Rachel marriedin a super-secret ceremony (befit-ting a superspy and his lady love)in New York on June 22. A sourceclose to the couple told "News ofthe World": "They are madly inlove, and couldn't wait to be hus-band and wife -- but they wantedminimum fuss. They had a coupleof friends as witnesses and theirchildren from previous relation-ships, and that was it."

***Q: I can't wait for Peter Jack-

son's "The Hobbit" to hit the

theaters, especially after seeingsome first-look pictures in "En-tertainment Weekly." Can youtell me which actors from "TheLord of the Rings" trilogy willbe back for "The Hobbit"? --Patrick L., Akron, OhioA: So far, Elijah Wood, Cate

Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, IanMcKellan, Christopher Lee, AndySerkis, Ian Holm and Hugo Weav-ing are set to return to MiddleEarth. Liv Tyler, who playedArwen in the trilogy, is keen tomake a cameo in the latest films, however, as of this writing, thereare no plans to resurrect her char-acter.(c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Welcome to my corner of the new weekendedition of the Sedalia Democrat. I could thinkof no better way to inaugurate my new look —check out the photo — than to give you somenews you can use to catch a mess of crappietoday or tomorrow.

Depth. Of all the factors that can spell thedifference between having fried fish or abologna sandwich for supper, none is asimportant as depth. Determining the range ofdepths to fish is a matter of pure science. Dur-ing the summer months in the ContinentalUnited States, the water in almost all largereservoirs and natural lakes — as well as manysmaller ones — stratifies into three distinctlayers.

The uppermost layer (the epilimnion) isseldom more than six to eight feet thick. It’stoo warm for crappie to remain in for anylength of time, despite the fact that it’s rich inoxygen and nutrients.

The bottom layer (the hypolimnion), maybegin as little as 15 feet or as much as 50 feetbeneath the surface on different lakes or at dif-ferent times on the same lake. It’s not onlycolder than crappie will tolerate if given achoice, but it’s also virtually devoid of oxygenin virtually all lakes with maximum depths ofless than 100 feet and in many deeper lakes aswell.

In between these two extremes lies a 10- to30-foot thick layer of water called the thermo-cline. It features plenty of oxygen and a fairlyrapid temperature gradient that allows manyspecies of fish to find their individual pre-ferred comfort zone.

I hope it’s obvious that you’ll want to keepyour bait or lure somewhere within the ther-mocline, but where? The easiest way toanswer that question is to ask successfulanglers how deep they’ve been finding crap-pie. Note that I didn’t say to ask how deep thewater was. That’s because, to a crappie, howmuch water is above his head is far moreimportant than how much water is under hisbelly. If there’s no one around to ask, eitherstart fishing about eight feet beneath the sur-face and slowly work your way down or startat about 20 feet and slowly work your bait orlure back up.

Structure. When the outdoor mediainvented the term “structure,” to help explainwhere bass tournament angler were findingfish, it met natural or manmade irregularitiesin the bottom of a lake. Wood, weeds andother qualifiers were called “objects.” Thesedays what most people call structure includesanything and everything that distinguishes aparticular location, so that’s the way I’ll use ithere.

On some lakes — north central Missouri’sThomas Hill Lake is a prime example —schools of summer crappie ignore structure infavor of roaming the main lake basin sus-pended beneath schools of shad. These fish area potential bonanza to be sure, but they can befrustratingly hard to locate.

Fortunately for those of us with less thaninfinite patience, the habitat in most Midwest-ern reservoirs includes enough crappie-attract-ing structures like flooded standing timber oncreek channel flats or along bluffs to keep ushappily jerking perch all summer long. Or atleast it would if all flooded timber were cre-ated equal in a crappie’s eyes.

Alas, they aren’t. I do most of my summercrappie fishing on Truman, and — you canmark my word for it on this one — every crap-pie more than 9 inches long in the entire lakehas a master’s degree in forestry. I know of noother way to explain why, on any given day, only a single species or, at most, genus of treewill be hosting 90 percent of the lake’s crap-pie.

I might as well admit it, I’m not as good asI should be at identifying live trees, let alonedead, almost entirely submerged ones. But Ido know an Osage orange (hedge) tree when Isee one, and I can tell the difference betweenthe large branching limbs of a white oak andthe straight trunk of a black oak. That — and awillingness to concentrate on the trees thecrappie are using that day — is all you or Ineed to know.

Live bait or jigs. By far the best father-and-sons crappie-catching team I know usesnothing but jigs the year round. Experienced— and I do mean experienced — crappieanglers will catch a higher percentage of keep-ers on jigs than anyone will on minnows. Thatsaid, anyone who doesn’t mind catching 50crappie in order to go home with 15 keepersshould chose minnows. As for me, I wouldn’tthink of going crappie fishing during the sum-mer months without a couple of rods riggedfor minnows and at least one rigged for jig-ging.

Many crappie anglers who prefer jigs ago-nize over choosing the color of the plastic tubeor curly tail they use. Not me. I always startwith a 1/32-ounce jig tipped with a 1-inch tubewith a dark green body and chartreuse tails. That’s also what I most often end up with, butI carry a box full of bodies in a wide variety ofcolors just in case.

Here’s a final suggestion that guaranteed tomake the crappie you catch taste better. Leaveyour boat’s live well dry, and put your fish onice as soon as they’re caught. This storagemethod has the additional advantage of allow-ing you time for a short break after you gethome before you have to clean fish.
