SUGGESTED PLAN OF WORK FOR 1942
(For detail procedure, see attached outline)
Indications point to a more favorable feed relation between.corn and.hog prices in 1942 than in 1941. Also, the need for a larger farm incomefrom livestock is as great or greater than ever before. With this in mind, every county should plan definite Result Demonstrations (with records) forthe county's needs, and then as many method Demonstrations as tine willpermit.
I. Result Demonstrations:
A. Thrifty Pig Demonstrations (1.3):
Damage from parasites is still increasing. This project conpsists‘of farromdng pigs on land that has been cultivated since any hogs rangedon it, and should be carried out according to the procedure listed on pages16 and 17 of Extension'Circular No. 238. Results should be reported onThrifty Pig Form.No. 2, following the weighing of the pigs when they areeight weeks old.
B. Feeding Demonstrations (l—B):
This project involves the use of a self feeder, the weighing ofthe pigs at the beginning and ending, a record of the weight and cost of allfeed consumed, and reporting the results on Swine Fbrm.No. 8. .A feW'wellplaced feeding demonstrations will give worthwhile local information.for yourgeneral promotion work.
C. flogging Down Demonstrations (4-6):
One or two hoaging down demonstrations with.corn.and soybeans orpeanuts or with small grains and hand fed supplements, will prove most valuable.North Carolina experiments indicate that pigs can run on corn.and peanuts untilthey weigh 85 pounds or on corn.and soybeans until they weigh 100 pounds andthen if finished on corn, minerals and one-third fish meal or tankage and 'two-thirds cottonseed meal, that they shouhi kill out 96 per cent firm pork.Feeding results should'be reported on Swine Fbrm.No. 8.
II. thhod.Demonstrations:
Self feeder and Farrowing House Construction (3—7 and Ar?):
Self feeder and individual ferrowing heuse construction are in-cluded in this project. Self feeder Blue Prints No. 61 and 217 and ferrowinghouse Blue Prints No. 13, 17 and 160 are available here. The Division ofAgricultural Engineering or this office will be glad to plan building demenpstrations with.you.
A. 5 & 6: Placing Purebreds:
This consists of the placement of purebred bears and sows. Itis suggested that young animals be placed in most cases as less money willbe involved.
C. l & 2: Killing and Curing:
These demonstrations to be conducted by the county'agent with, andWithout the aid of the specialist.
C. 3 & 6: Cold Storage:
Assistance should be given to patrons and operators of established‘cold storage plants for curing pork and use of cold storage lockers for freshpork. '
D. Marketing (1—8 ):
Assistance to be given by agent to organized groups of farmers inconnection with the sale of live hogs and pork @roducts. The agent Should lista cooperative shipping organization as a Result Demonstration but each saleas a method.Demonstration.
