For me, the holiday season just isn’t quite right until I watch Frank Capra’s, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” This classic black and white film is so much more than “just another sappy Christmas story.” The movie captures a feeling perhaps more common than not many of us experience from time-to-time: “does my being here make a difference?”
The emotional despair is so raw when the movie’s main character, George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) stands at the bridge, unwilling to go any further with his life. As he looks down at the water, intent on ending his days, George bravely rescues someone else and saves their life. George is oblivious to the fact he has done something great; he’s still despondent. Without realizing the person he saved was actually his guardian angel, George exclaims, “I wish I had never been born.” The guardian angel grants George his wish to teach him a life lesson. Spoiler alert-- George saw the world without him ever in it, and more importantly, he saw the lives of the people he loved without having known him. The movie ends with George realizing his life had meaning and purpose to people he never imagined.
Someone once said, “Life is what happens to you when you’re making other plans.” When those “other plans” go awry, if you’re like me, you get pretty frustrated. It’s during these truly low
points that our guardian angels--our friends and family, are there to pick us up. They help us continue on, and show us how we are each a valuable contribution to this life. Perhaps it was the deep love and caring of George’s friends and family that changed his perspective about his life...they personified his guardian angel. Imagine all the gaps left in our community if we were not the people we are; doing the jobs we do. Just ask your friends and coworkers how they’ll feel when you move.
Transition is always front and center in the Air Force. Transition knows no season. With heavy heart FSS bids farewell to many in our leadership chain this month. From our Superintendent and First Sergeant to Flight Chiefs and Activity Managers, the daily contributions by
these selfless people reached beyond their FSS family. Hurlburt Field is a stronger community because of their contributions.
It is my hope that, as you enjoy this holiday season, each of you take a moment to consider the many contributions you selflessly give our community. Your part in the Hurlburt Field community makes a difference to someone or something—least of which is our freedom as Americans. Listen for the bells, watch for angels, and remember, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Thank you for all YOU do. Season’s Greetings,
Dianne
“Look, Daddy. Teacher says every time a bell rings,
an angel gets his wings.”
--Zuzu Bailey (Karolyn Grimes) from Frank Capra’s, It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946

Hurlburt Field - To give military shoppers peace of mind this holiday season, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is extending its return policy for items purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24.
The Exchange’s standard policy allows returns anywhere from up to 15 to 90 days of purchase with a sales receipt. The holiday return/exchange policy extends these terms through Jan. 31, 2016.
“For Airmen who are getting a jump on holiday shopping, the Exchange’s extended return policy ensures a gift can be returned if it misses the mark,” said Main Store Manager, Barbara Ross. “The Hurlburt Exchange wants to make returns as simple as possible for military shoppers.”
Shoppers can also return items purchased through shopmyexchange.com at the Hurlburt Exchange. For more information about the extended refund policy, shoppers can visit customer service.”

Hurlburt ITT is where they take your travel dreams and turn them into a reality. With your budget and your must-haves in mind, their experienced travel agents are well versed in creating memorable travel for welcome homes, anniversaries, honeymoons, surprises, graduation cruises, family vacations and more.
Between military specials and hassle free bookings, the benefits of ITT offer our active duty and retirees the luxury of a personal travel agent without the cost. The helpful and educated staff builds each visitor an entire travel package with their expertise in just one sitting to save you the stress of trying to hunt for the best deals. It is important to note, ITT is not able to ticket “just” leisure air travel but rather all-inclusive trips for their patrons.
The ITT travel agents will walk you through your arrangements and answer ALL your questions about theme park adventures, cruising, all-inclusive destinations, or anything that comes to mind. Should a customer find a better deal on-line, ITT encourages people to bring the information to ITT. Even if ITT cannot do better on pricing, they can book the trip for you with just a nominal deposit and a delayed payment plan. Think of it as travel lay-away that ensures competitive pricing and customer support throughout your travels.
Experienced travel agent, Victoria Milam has the tools to find customers the best deals (agent rates) and military rates not available over the phone or internet. However the hands down, best part of booking travel through the ITT office is the ability to make interest free payments on the trip instead of a lump sum, upfront payment with an interest bearing credit card.
Additionally, should anything happen before, during or after your trip, ITT staff member are ready and able to help if a wrench is thrown into your travel plans. Website booking is impersonal and not always there when a vacation turns into a nightmare.
The best benefit of using ITT for travel and event tickets is, as with all purchases from a Force Support facility, profits are returned to the base in the form of community programming and events. It’s like paying yourself to have fun!
Hurlburt Information, Tickets and Tours (ITT) office is located on Cody Avenue, next to the Commando Pride Airman Center. Customer service hours are Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Current specials are online at www.myhurlburt.com/itt.php or for information on how to book your next trip, call 884-7848.

Hurlburt Field – Your credit score runs your life. It determines how much interest you’ll pay on your next auto loan, your ability to buy a home, find a no interest or “same as cash” loans from big box stores, your auto insurance rate, and credit card interest level. Most importantly as members of the Department of Defense, your credit score directly impacts your ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Before credit scores, people obtained loans through handshakes and gut checks. Lenders realized that method was flawed and unreliable. Credit scores became popular in the 1980’s and provided a standardized method of determining a person’s reliability with credit. The numerical scores are generated by credit bureaus or lenders and are used to predict a borrower’s risk of delinquency or default. Scores are based on information in a consumer’s credit report and also on information about how other borrowers with similar information have repaid their bills. Thanks to computer applications, lenders and consumers can quickly assess their financial situation.
There are several credit scoring systems, but the most popular is Fair, Issac and Company (FICO). Credit scores can range between 300 and 850. The higher the score, the more credit - worthy. Average scores can vary from 680 to 720. If you have a score of 750 or above, you should have no problem receiving a credit card with a low interest rate or a low or interest - free auto loan.
The Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) can assist individuals interested in receiving a copy of their credit score. One of
their five accredited financial counselors can set up a one-on-one appointment to provide a confidential financial assessment and help with building a financial repair plan—all free of charge!
For people more comfortable in managing their financial affairs without assistance, individuals can obtain a free copy of their credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com. Each of the credit reporting agencies will provide one a free credit report in a 12 month period. Factoid: to monitor your credit for free for an entire year, do not pull your credit report from all three agencies at the same time. Rotate your report order once every four months through the Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.
If you have any questions concerning the content of your report, A&FRC welcomes you to schedule an appointment with one of their financial counselors. Bring in your report for a no fee analysis. CAUTION: Beware of web sites that advertise free financial services. There are often hidden costs in fine print associated with the use of these companies.
It is never too late to learn about managing your finances and controlling debt. Hurlburt A&FRC has several a lunch-time financial seminars scheduled: If at First You Don’t Succeed--Credit Repair on Thursday, December 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Santa’s 2016 $$$ Plan on Friday, January 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. For additional questions, schedule an appointment, or register for a seminar, please call 884-6800.
