From Where I Sit I was going to publish an article about the financial problems of B’nai Brith Canada . I changed my mind .

Those that wrote the articles were reporting news; they weren’t active members of B’nai Brith . They didn’t know what the effect of their reporting really meant . They didn’t evolve into who they were because of B’nai Brith .They didn’t learn about the world by being in B’nai Brith . They didn’t learn to give of themselves to those who were in need because of B’nai Brith . They didn’t make lasting friendships because they belonged to B’nai Brith . They didn’t find romance, and love because B’nai Brith gave us the opportunity to meet people we otherwise might not have met . I did .

It was hard watching something I love die . I watched the cancer gnaw away at the organization until what was left was only a shell of its former self . The organization went from being a successful community service group to a second class political pussy . It meowed but never clawed . When B’nai Brith no longer cared about membership, more intent on going in a different direction, I offered little resistance . Instead of building a strong base for the future, the thousands of members who were in B’nai Brith had nowhere to go and have died away . Who wants to join a dying service organization?

I’ve been in business since I was eighteen . I’ve survived bad partnerships, recession, changing technology and rotating accounts . I survived because I believe I treated my employees and my clients with respect and with purpose . Mismanagement and excessive spending will kill any business . That applies to organizations as well .

Cash-strapped B’nai Brith Canada is selling two of its

landmark buildings in Toronto, including its national

headquarters. The headquarters carries two mortgages

totaling nearly $4 million, the Canadian Jewish News

reported, and in 2012 the market value assessment

was set at slightly more than $3 million. The difference

leaves “open the question of how much B’nai Brith can

net from the sale.” –excerpt from: Forward .

The real estate market in Toronto is hot . I’m sure the building will sell without too much trouble . So, what happens to us die-

hearts? Where do we go? And when we go, are we still in B’nai Brith? But what is B’nai Brith today? Is it time to move on? Can we still be contributors? Or is this the time to remember why we joined B’nai Brith? The world evolves . It is expected there will be hiccups . I can’t believe by giving up I will accomplish anything meaningful . Maybe this is why I stayed when it was apparent I wasn’t wanted .

Also up for sale is a cutting-edge facility for those suffering

from Alzheimer’s disease opened by B’nai Brith Canada

just 18 months ago. The Alzheimer Centre for Excellence

has 45 beds but only 20 residents, and has been bleeding

money since it opened last December, the CJN also

reported, citing court documents. A front-page Toronto

Star story published Thursday said the facility is under

insolvency protection. As of two weeks ago, the home

had $65,000 in reserves and was spending $50,000 a

month. It owes $11 million to creditors, according to the

Star. The building received $5.4 million in funding from

the federal government. –excerpt from: Forward .

When we needed help the most, those who were aware of our problems left . A new broom means nothing if the bristles carry the same crap that we have had to endure for the past 30 years . We are about to go through some difficult times . Many of us are of an age when physical effort is difficult but then sitting around and doing nothing is worse . Not all marriages survive . Not all siblings get along . Not all organizations remain as they were – changes occur and in some cases the change are meaningful . This might be such a time . I’m not looking for a divorce . I’m not prepared to walk away because I’ve been disappointed . I can’t forget what once was BUT I can move forward . I can help rebuild so long as what I help build has a meaning that I can appreciate .

Last week, Dimant, 69, informed the new management

that he is owed annual retirement payments of

$175,000, or 75 percent of his former salary. Dimant

said the arrangement was approved by the board, the

Star reported. A source familiar with the deal told the

Star that it was arranged with little oversight while

Dimant was still the CEO. –excerpt from: Forward .

It’s time to say, ENOUGH . It’s time to take a stand .

Sunnybrook Shabbat Service

On Saturday, June 20, 2015, we sponsored our annual Shabbat Service for the permanent residents of Sunnybrook Veterans’ Hospital, many of whom are, in fact, war veterans . I am pleased to report that twelve Lodge volunteers attended the service .

This year we hosted five residents, along with their caregivers and one spouse . The Shabbat service and Kiddush lunch afterwards, is a special event for them – an opportunity to go to the shul, and to get some “Yiddishkeit .” They look forward to meeting with other people, including our volunteers . Our members, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoy this opportunity to bring some happiness and spiritual stimulation to people who otherwise are mostly confined to their wheelchairs in their rooms or the hallways of their respective floors .

One resident was especially overjoyed that we had come to bring him to the shul . His wife kept admonishing us not to make physical contact, because of her concern regarding the spread of disease, but all he wanted to do was repeatedly give us hugs and kisses . Every time he kissed me, she made me go and wash my hands, and stood and watched to make sure that I was washing properly . The most heartwarming moment was when Zvi called him up for his aliyah . At first he was very reluctant to come to the bimah, but once he was done, he raised both arms high in the air and gave himself a big, albeit silent, cheer .

As always, yasher koach, to Zvi Wainsteim for a terrific job in organizing and conducting the services . Not only did Zvi ensure that every resident in attendance received an aliyah, he also involved every one of us in the service . Likewise, a yasher koach to Ron Rotman for his beautiful reading of the Haftorah .

Sincere thanks to Bev Steinberg for preparing and organizing the delicious Kiddush luncheon . Please accept our apologies for making you walk that far . We’ll make it up to you . Special thanks to Norman and Beryl Mosselson, Lou Ginsberg, Ginette Wainsteim, Ted Herman, Linda Rotman, Ron Blatt, and Leon and Shane Emer for attending . Extra special thanks to Hilda Harris, the shames, for being so supportive and so appreciative .

On the other hand, we continue to be distressed that fewer and fewer residents seem to be attending . When I asked Hilda about this, she told me that there are actually forty-one Jewish people residing in Sunnybrook, but she depends on groups like ours, as well as Synagogue Brotherhoods in the city, to get them to come, because there is sometimes a lack of support from the staff . So even though we were happy to see twelve Lodge members, we need even more of you to attend . Our involvement would be to bring the residents from their rooms, join in the services, host the Kiddush, “schmooze” with the residents, and then return them to their rooms . This is all accomplished within two hours – from 10:00 a .m . to about 12 noon . The more volunteers and support we have, the easier it will be for Hilda to get the residents to come, and for Zvi to conduct these services .

We have also been asked about conducting an early Friday afternoon service . You will be hearing more about this from Zvi . If you would like to be involved in any capacity, please contact Zvi or Moshe Grossinger . Even if you don’t participate, you can make a contribution just by being there . We promise you a rich and special experience .

by Eric Eisen

For those that attended we say thank you. Your participation was greatly appreciated.HOPE TO SEE YOU NEXT YEAR

Kadima Barbeque

Sunday, June 7, 2015 was a beautiful warm day . It was Kadima’s annual year-end barbecue . At 2:00 p .m . several members of our Lodge gathered in a room at the Beth Emeth Synagogue to enjoy what turned out to be a wonderful event . There was a disc jockey playing all kinds of music . Marcel Cohen, the leader of Kadima, was singing up a storm . The client’s of Kadima were also singing and dancing . We knew then and there that this was one of their better parties .

Then the food arrived: delicious hamburgers and hot dogs along with a scrumptious cole slaw . All the trimmings were served with soft drinks . Following next were giant chocolate chip cookies, wonderful tasting watermelon and cantaloupe . Our Lodge people helped serve and clean up . We were also dancing and singing with Kadima .

The volunteers from L .M .O .L .-Don Mills Lodge worked very hard and enjoyed their chance to help others . Marcel Cohen kept saying over and over thank you very much to L .M .O .L .-Don Mills Lodge . The clients of Kadima were really appreciative .

Many thanks to Ron Rotman for taking photos, which will accompany this article, and many, many thanks to all those listed below who did a super-human mitzvah:

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIESThanks for the memories

Of things I can’t forget, and of people I have met .Of our annual conventions in the Catskills,

Where we laughed and sang and forgot our ills .Memories I retain . How can I ever forget?

And thanks for the memoriesOf summers being with those in need

Whether they be young or old, it was our deedOf giving our time away for free

Eating, cooking and dogs, even drinking tea .

And thanks for the memories Giving our lives a purpose and a goal

Instead of staying home and not feeling wholeBeing with those less fortunate for many different ways

Leaving them smiling with us, tears in our eyes .

And thanks for the memoriesFor the friends we made forever,For the places we went together

For the wives and husbands we marriedFor being there when we tarried .

And thanks for the memoriesBecause that’s all we have left now

Our building and our name on the wall is gone .What we have left are only memories .

We have nothing but memories .

It is said men don’t cry, but that’s not trueWe have our memories just like glue

Our memories live on .Blessed be our memories .

Happy New Year

TO ALL – GOOD HEALTH

TO those I may have wronged,I ask for forgiveness.

TO those I may have helped,I wish I could have done more.

TO those I neglected to help,I ask for understanding.

TO those who helped me,I sincerely thank you so much.

May the NEW YEAR bring tears of joy, the pain of getting well and the happiness of being with family.

A Yiddish Poem

Yiddish was the secret code, therefore I don’t farshtaist, A bisseleh maybe here and there, the rest has gone to waste.

Sadly when I hear it now, I only get the gist, My Bubbe spoke it beautifully;but me, I am tsemisht.

So oi vei as I should say, or even oy vai iz mir,Though my pisk is lacking Yiddish, it’s familiar to my ear.

And I’m no Chaim Yonkel, in fact I was shtick naches,But, when it comes to Yiddish though, I’m talking out my tuchas.

Es iz a shandeh far di kinder that I don’t know it better(Though it’s really nishtgefelecht when one needs to write a letter).

But, when it comes to characters, there’s really no contention,No other linguist can compete with honourable mentshen:

They have nebbishes and nebechels and others without mazel,Then, too, schmendriks and schlemiels, and let’s not forget schlemazel.

These words are so precise and descriptive to the listener,So much better than “a pill” is to call someone ‘farbissener’.

Or – that a brazen woman would be better called Choleria,And you’ll agree farklempt says more than does hysteria.

I’m not haken dir a tshainik and I hope I’m not a kvetch, Disn’t mieskeit kinder, than to call someone a wretch?

Mitten derinnen, I hear Bubbe say, “It’s nechtiker tog, don’t fear,To me you’re still a maven, zol zein shah, don’t fill my ear.

A leben ahf dein keppele, I don’t mean to interrupt,But you are speaking narishkeit . . . And . . . A gezunt auf dein kop!”

Are You Too Busy For A Friend? Taken from the Internet – Author Unknown

One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name . Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about each of their classmates and write it down . It took the remainder of the class period to finish their assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers .

That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual . On Monday she gave each student his or her list . Before long, the entire class was smiling . ‘Really?’ she heard whispered . ‘I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!’ and, ‘I didn’t know others liked me so much,’ were most of the comments .

No one ever mentioned those papers in class again . She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn’t matter . The exercise had accomplished its purpose . The students were happy with themselves and one another . That group of students moved on .

Several years later, one of the students was killed in Vietnam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student . She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before . He looked so handsome, so mature . The church was packed with his friends . One by one those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin . The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin . As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her . ‘Were you Mark’s math teacher?’ he asked . She nodded: ‘yes .’ Then he said: ‘Mark talked about you a lot .’

After the funeral, most of Mark’s former classmates went together to a luncheon . Mark’s mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher . ‘We want to show you something,’ his father said, taking a wallet out of his pocket ‘They found this on Mark when he was killed . We thought you might recognize it .’

Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many

times . The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark’s classmates had said about him .

‘Thank you so much for doing that,’ Mark’s mother said . ‘As you can see, Mark treasured it .’

All of Mark’s former classmates started to gather around . Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, ‘I still have my list . It’s in the top drawer of my desk at home .’

Chuck’s wife said, ‘Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album .’

‘I have mine too,’ Marilyn said . ‘It’s in my diary .’

Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group . ‘I carry this with me at all times, ‘ Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: ‘I think we all saved our lists’ . That’s when the teacher finally sat down and cried . She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again .

The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don’t know when that one day will be. So please, tell the people you love and are for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

JFCS Picnic While the weather outside may have been cloudy and rainy, spirits were at an all time high inside . This year’s annual JFCS family picnic took place once again on Sunday June 14th at the Lipa Green building’s party room . Guests dined on delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, chips, candy floss and amazing donuts .

Magen Boys entertainment was on hand to keep the party going all afternoon with dancing and prizes . A mini carnival complete with games, a photo booth and tattoos also added to the fun . Approximately 200 people attended the picnic this year and good times were had by all .

Special thanks to the following volunteers who came and helped with set up and serving dinner, Brenda Stevens, Allan Wilson, Yaffa Krieger, Louie Salmon, Judy and Harold Bricks, Lou Ginsberg and Charlie, Joanne and Tarah Bleier .

PreplanningIt is human to put things off – we all tend to procrastinate a little! Yet, we plan our vacations, our retirement, our pension programs and most people have (or recognize that they should have) a will. Prearranging one’s funeral may seem a difficult task, but many people feel a certain peace-of-mind from doing so. They feel that it can eliminate some of the anxiety which can accompany the death of someone loved, and feel that their action can be considered an act of love for those who will be left to make decisions.

Prearranged Funeral ServicesYou have protected your family in so many different ways – with life insurance, health insurance, and by making a will. Prearranging your funeral is also a part of sensible estate planning. In advance of need, you and your family can think it out together, decide together, and act together. People who live alone especially appreciate the convenience and sense of security.

Prearrangements can be made in a number of ways – depositing the full sum of money at once, installment payments or by merely recording your wishes and preferences to be carried out at the time of death with the cost to be paid by your estate or next-of-kin. You should discuss the various options with your funeral director.

Any monies pre-paid to the funeral home are deposited in a trust account with the Guaranteed Funeral Deposits of Canada (Fraternal) in accordance with the Funeral Directors and Establishments Act for the Province of Ontario. Interest earned stays with the principal amount in trust to fund the cost of the funeral.
