Defn: What is a webinar?
• A web seminar• Able to transmit video, audio, and images, the
webinar will also enable authors to share applications and annotate their IJAP paper on a whiteboard – the objective is to exchange information in a real-time and two-way format about each paper in the next issue of IJAP
• Usual delivery formats: – presenter vs multiple authors from one site– presenter vs multiple authors from multiple sites
Planning our IJAP Webinars
• Set the Date & Time• Select Topic – we will keep each chapter topic
focused• Select Speaker(s) (could well be yourself!)• Practice on the Platform – how to facilitate the
learning and how to run a Q & A session• Make sure all authors know about the webinar /
send out automated reminders• Follow-up evaluation
Importance of Author Interaction
• Polling
• Chat: live Q & A
• Annotation tools
• Post webinar survey
Audio Requirements

Perceived benefits• Use of audio and video creates greater feeling of community in
distance learning (sharing of experiences)• Learning more accessible and flexible• Facilitates multi-level interaction (tutor can lecture, interact with
students, facilitate group collaboration in a real-time format, designate students to be in charge of sessions
• Arching of sessions for personal review or for those that missed it first time around
Perceived risks/costsPoor quality/students do not have suitable hardware/software/ Time to develop skills/ Quiet space to work

your paper?
What have been the most frustrating
aspects of contributing a paper
to an academic journal in the past?

1. Trying to appeal to a large audience with a broad topic
2. Failing to make your
invitation exciting
What about a Model for Webinars?
4 Stage Learning Model for Webinars(Appleton & Walmsley, 2011)
Active Induction – Guided Exploration – Facilitated Investigation – Self Organised Writer
Active Induction
Set up non-essential socialisation activities in webinar to test technical set up and develop skills before running essential presentations
Guided Exploration
One author summarises each webinar session
What can the authors do before your webinar? [Facilitated Investigation]Prepare questions for the presenter on their paper and lead topic discussion on audio or chat
What can the authors do themselves with the webinar? [Self Organised Learner]
• Author presents own/group research• Author hosts webinar with expert for rest of group• Author collaborates (without editors) on preparation of their own
paper• Expert is invited and interviewed• Author leads others on guided tour of their paper via desktop sharing
