PIPE SYSTEMS DRINKING WATER
The Connection Technology
Establishing a FRIATHERM® rigid press-fit welding jointMaking a FRIATHERM® rigid connection only requires a few steps. The jointing process does not require separate energy.
Pipe cutting Deburring Applying FRIATHERM®
“Component+”Jointing and aligning
Assembly and safety instructionsDeburr pipes of all dimensions with the aid of the relevant tools available for the system.Conduct visual inspection to determine whether pipes and fittings are clean; if need be, clean with oil-free cloth.
Optimum processing temperature is above 0 °C.In case of lower temperatures, briefly warm up pipes and fittings.
For safety reasons, mark plug-in depth for subsequent review.Only approved elements and components warrant correct connections.
Allow for some waiting period after plugging in elements and/or components. At ambient temperature, pipes may be exposed to a maximum water pressure level of 6 bar after 30 minutes.Pipes and fittings can be pressurised after 60 minutes. In case of temperatures lower than ambient temperature extend the required time span to conduct the pressure test(15 bar according to pressure record – see Schedule), i.e. allow for a waiting period of 120 minutes at temperaturesranging between 10 °C and 20 °C and for 240 minutes at temperatures between 0 °C and -10 °C.
The adhesive may be used within one year as from its date of manufacture (see date indicated on bottom). After the expiry of this date (i.e. indicated date + 1 year) the adhesive should no longer be used.

The Connection Technology
Safety features of the connection
The conic socket and the system adhesive create an inseparable material-conclusive connection providing for aconsistent hygienic connection free of any gaps between pipes and fittings.
All materials used are in keeping with KTW (German Association for Plastic Materials in Drinking Water) approvalsconstituting a basic requirement for obtaining DVGW certification of hygienic conformity.

PIPE SYSTEMS DRINKING WATER
Transitions and Reducers
Transitions show bonding areas and should only be jointedwith the relevant pipes in keeping with the standardconnection.
After deburring and applying the adhesive, insert the pipeend into the transition. Only bond pipes in transitions.
Do not use street fittings, as full insertion depth may not bewarranted for constructional reasons.
ReducersA clearly structured product range allows for fewer expenses in terms of warehousing and ordering. This objective isobtained by the unique possibility of flexibly using reducers integrated in the system. This way, a T-piece can beadjusted to various installation situations.
Mount wall plates (ceiling elbows) by anchoring them.For such purpose, mounting rails L = 259 mm(Ref. No. 55 30 27) and L = 710 mm (Ref. No. 55 31 76)are available.
For sound insulation purposes, conventional soundcontrol equipment can be used.
Example: Reducers allow for any combination ofT-pieces and thus for adjusting them tothe relevant structural situation.
Reduced T-piece
Reducers can be combined with each other and do notrequire pipe pieces placed in-between. Reductions do notchange the dimensions of T-pieces.

Flanges and Repair Couplings
Transition to other systemsThreaded transitions, unions, flanges and connectors provide for the transition to other systems.
Flange connectionsFlange connections on fittings, equipment and othersystems can be realised by means of system flanges(1 standard flange, backing ring with bonding sleeve, flatgasket). Use the relevant threaded flange as counter-flange.
Repair couplings
Repair couplings are available for pipeline connectionsof d 16 up to d 32 mm.For installation follow steps 1 to 4 below:

Hand-tighten union nut and draw it up with tool(max. 1 turn = 360°).
System TransitionsSuitable direct-fixing adapters are available for transitionsfrom FRIATHERM® rigid to FRIATHERM multi® andFRIATHERM uni®. FRIATHERM multi® and FRIATHERMuni® stand for pipe systems conceived for drinking waterand heating grids.
FRIATHERM multi ® is composed of three dimensionsranging from d 16 up to d 25. Exclusively the silver-coloured pipe and the black push-fit fitting are used torealise the „push-fit“ system connection. The connection process does not require any tooling. Incombination with its dimensionally stable multi-layer pipe, the particular strength of the installations system includesthe speedy installation of horizontal connections and itsassembly under confined conditions.
FRIATHERM uni ® is composed of white multi-layer pipesand metal fittings. These components are pressed with theaid of the solid stainless steel bushes of dimensions d 16up to d 40.

PIPE SYSTEMS DRINKING WATER
Linear Expansion of Pipelines, Installation Basics
Generally speaking, all pipes are subject to linear expansion due to thermal influence (thermal expansion). This linearexpansion is, as a rule, set off by means of bending legs (change of direction) or compensators. Compensators needregular maintenance. Bending legs, on the other hand, are maintenance- free elements and mainly depend on themounting conditions along the relevant installation place.
FRIATHERM® rigid pipes show a favourable linear expansion coefficient of 0.07 mm/mK.
The use bending legs mainly depends on the change of direction of the pipeline. If natural changes of direction arenot encountered along pipeline, use expansion loop.

PIPE SYSTEMS DRINKING WATER
Linear Expansion and Shaft Installations, Installation Basics
Space-saving expansion loops in a shaft forhot water pipelines.
The fixed points guide thermo- linear expansion.Mounting fixed points in the centre of the riser isadvantageous. It is important that the outlet isequipped with an appropriate bending leg.
If insulation is projected to provide for the requiredexpansion, make sure that the insulation materialoffers sufficient thickness and elasticity.
When guiding pipes through shaft walls, consider the re-levant diameters and the arrangement of the penetrationopenings to avoid any obstruction of the movement of thebending sides.

Pipe Fixings, Mounting Instructions
Pipe fixings form a substantial part of mounting work. Along uninterrupted FRIATHERM® rigid hot water pipelines, the fixing distance can be reduced by using pipe trays L = 3.00 m.
Only use clamps as pipe fixings suitable for plastic pipes.Arrange clamps in keeping with general installationinstructions.Dimension

Do not restrict movement of pipes within the bendingleg by means of clamps, pipe trays or other structuralelements.
Use expansion loops along pipelines lacking naturalbending legs.
Using pipe trays allows for extending fixing distances. Ifthe pipeline is directly connected with the clamps, furtherfixings are not required, as the pipe tray fits the pipeperfectly.
Using a pipe tray does not obstruct the attachment of theinsulation to the pipeline. Do not use pipe trays withinexpansion loops or bending legs to ensure rebounding ofthe pipeline.

Pressure test with water
Conduct pressure tests on drinking water installations in keeping with DIN 1988-2. If possible, arrange pressuregauges offering a reading accuracy of 0.1 bar at the lowest point. Fill up the completed and yet not concealedpipeline system with filtered water. Test the pipeline in line with DIN 1988-2 for plastic pipes. Insulation of formparts and filling of gaps should be effected after the completion of the pressure test.
Please also see the form entitled ”Pressure Test Record” annexed hereto.
Pressure test with compressed air
The test may be carried out with oil-free inert gases in keeping with the ZVSHK Worksheet entitled ”Conductionof Pressure Tests With Compressed Air or Inert Gases for Potable Water Installations According to DVGW 1988(TRWI, Technical Regulations for Drinking Water Installations)”.
The relevant test is subdivided into a leakage detection test up to 110 mbar and into a stability test for pipes up toDN 50 at a maximum pressure gauge of 3 bar and for pipe dimensions ranging between DN 50 and DN 100 at amaximum pressure gauge of 1 bar. For safety reasons, higher pressure levels may not be applied.
Use the available leakage detection spray (Ref. No. 55 73 40) or a solution of hard soap (5%) to check connections.Using inappropriate leakage detection sprays can cause stress cracks.
Pipe flushing
In principle, drinking water pipes need cleansing. For hygienic reasons, i.e. due to the corrosion-resistant plasticmaterial, the conduction of a single standard flushing regime is sufficient for the FRIATHERM® pipeline system. For corrosion- related reasons, apply air -water mixtures only on systems composed of metal pipes.
Storage and Transportation
FRIATHERM® pipes can be stored at any temperature. Keep dry unwrapped package units. When storing andtransporting FRIATHERM® pipes make sure that the pipes always rest lengthways. In general, avoid any bendingof the pipes.
Extreme resistance is characteristic of FRIATHERM® pipes. Nevertheless, they may be damaged due to mechanicalimpact. In consequence, pipes and form parts should be transported in their original packaging.
Protect FRIATHERM® pipes and form parts against direct glare of the sun. When installing FRIATHERM®
components, it is sufficient to apply protective coatings (solvent-free water-based paints) or insulation materialagainst the effects of direct insolation.

PIPE SYSTEMS DRINKING WATER
General Notes on Planning and Installation Instructions
Equipotential bonding
FRIATHERM® rigid is a non-conductive pipeline system and may thus not be included in the equipotential bonding. In case of modifications, reconstructions or partial restructuring measures on existing systems inform the client aboutthe requirement that an approved electrician must check the functionality of the electric protection and earthingsystems during the performance of these measures. That applies to all installations, as the majority of connectionsand equipment components can switch off integrated protective functions.
Sound insulation
On pipeline systems, noise control is achieved by using insulation materials and clamps with linings. Ceiling ducts aresound-insulated owing to the system’s approved fire -protection measures. Insulate the non-positive connections towalls with the aid of conventional sound insulators. Standard DIN 4109 specifies the application of fittings complyingwith fitting group 1 (L
FG ≤ 20 dB (A).
Additional heating
The FRIATHERM® rigid system allows for the integration of an additional heating grid. Fix heating bands in keepingwith the instructions given by the relevant manufacturer of heating bands. Heating bands and their insulation mustbe suitable for plastic pipes. The maximum surface temperature of a heating band may not exceed 70 °C.When using heating bands, check in particular their application in terms of collective fuse (check valve) and shut-offoptions to avoid any impermissible pressure increase within the pipeline grid. Shut -off measures in combination withband-based heating leads to uncontrolled pressure levels within the pipeline system.
Pipe-laying in endangered areas
Thanks to its high-grade plastic material, FRIATHERM® rigid pipes and fittings are resistant to the majority of externalinfluences. However, exposure to aggressive gases or humidity may cause unwelcome effects. Consequently, alwayskeep highly -creeping chemical substances (such as disinfectants for external application) away from plastic pipes.
Grease and oil products or leakage detection sprays can also contain substances possibly damaging plasticpipelines.
Disinfection of pipeline grids
FRIATHERM® rigid pipeline systems meet the requirements for both thermal and chemical disinfection. Provide forchemical disinfection measures based on approved methods and disinfectants in particular in buildings forming apossible source of danger. When applying disinfectants, obtain a written approval from FRIATEC AG for safetyreasons.
Compensators
Compensators can be used in combination with FRIATHERM® rigid components. Their integration calls for additionalinstallation work. Follow the mounting instructions for the relevant types of compensators. Only use compensatorssuitable for plastic pipes.
Frost -proof installation
Install FRIATHERM® rigid pipes and fittings so as to prevent any frost-related damage. Fully empty the pipelines ortake appropriate measures to protect the mains against freezing.
Flushing of pipes
Standard DIN 1988-2 requires that drinking water pipes must be cleansed by means of an air -water mixture forcorrosion-related reasons. The FRIATHERM® rigid product range is based on a corrosion-resistant material and, owing to its conception and design, offers gap-free connections. Consequently, simple flushing is sufficient.
Connection to drinking water heaters
Warm water heaters can be connected directly, if the safety equipment of the relevant warm water heater does notallow for temperatures exceeding 95 °C (short-time exposure) in keeping with the current standards DIN 1988 andDIN VDE 0700 (German Association of Electrical Engineers, Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker) as well aspressure levels beyond 10 bar.

The German Potable Water Ordinance
The German Potable Water Ordinance has for its purpose to warrant towards users uninterrupted and nutritionallyacceptable drinking water supply services. As a rule, avoid stagnant water.
Determine whether the pipeline is suitable for disinfection measures. Such measures include thermal and chemicaldisinfection. When opting for chemical disinfection, install the pipeline grid so as to allow for sectional drainage of thesystem.
In endangered buildings showing longer stagnation periods due to operational reasons, it is imperative to ensure thatthe pipes can be drained. That includes storey distributors located close to the rising main and needing shutting offand draining in case of longer standstills.
With regard to public buildings, the competent public health department assumes drinking water supervision andexamination tasks. In consequence, unrestricted operability of the pipeline grid for all types of water is of utmostimportance as to the used materials.
Otherwise, restrictions related to pipeline elements could lead to complaints in case of changes in the water qualitycropping up during operation.
All components of the FRIATHERM® rigid drinking water system comply with KTW guidelines. Transitions are tinnedand can thus be installed without limitation for all drinking water qualities. Additionally, the fitting and pipe material hasbeen tested in keeping with DVGW Worksheet W 270. The test certificate confirms that the FRIATHERM® rigid pipeand fitting material are, from the microbiological point of view, suitable for application in the drinking water sector.
Hygiene, legionella pneumophila
Measures aiming at reducing the growth of legionella pneumophila (causing legionaries’ disease) are describedin various publications and DVGW Worksheets W 551 (Potable Water Heating and Pipeline Systems; TechnicalMeasures to Reduce the Growth of Legionella Pneumophila) and W 552 (Potable Water Heating and PipelineSystems; Technical Measures to Reduce the Growth of Legionella Pneumophila; Technical Restructuring andOperation).
Thermal and chemical disinfection as well as a minimum of stagnation zones are essential for the installedpipeline system.
Due to its design-immanent structure, standard FRIATHERM® rigid connections are gap- free. The chemicaldisinfection options are dependent on approved measures. In case of chemical disinfection measures verify(hotline) the resistance of the system in combination with the selected method and obtain a confirmation inwriting.

Insulation of Pipelines, Planning and Installation Instructions
Insulation of cold water pipesInsulation of cold water pipes is based on DIN 1988-2 toavoid heating and condensation. The standard values applyto a thermal conductivity of λ = 0.040 W/(mK). Theseminimum insulation values must be converted for insulatingmaterials of different thermal conductivity. The insulatingmaterial selected must have an approval for plastic pipes.
Insulation of hot water pipesHot water pipes must be insulated in line with Annex 5 ofthe German Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV). Incontrast to the 1994 Heating Installations Ordinance, it isnow the inside diameter which is of relevance when deter-mining the thickness of the insulating material according tothe Energy Conservation Ordinance.

Type of pipe / fitting
To the extent pipelines of central heating systems as stated in lines 1 to 4are located in heated rooms or in components between heated rooms of auser and to the extent their heat release can be influenced by means ofnon-concealed shut-off equipment, there are no requirements for the mini-mum thickness of the insulating layer. That also applies to hot water pipesof a maximum inside diameter of 22 mm installed in residential buildingsand being neither integrated in the circulation cycle nor equipped withparallel electric heating.
As to materials of thermal conductivity other than 0.035 W/(mK), convert theminimum thickness of the insulating layers accordingly. For conversion andthermal conductivity of the insulating material, use calculation methods andvalues encompassing engineering standards.
The minimum thickness of the insulating layer according to Table 1 can bereduced for heat distribution and warm water pipelines, insofar as anequivalent limitation of heat release is also warranted according to otherrequirements for pipeline-insulating materials and in consideration of theinsulation efficiency of the pipes.

Fire Protection, Planning and Installation Instructions
Simple solutions for R 90 pipe passages through walls and ceilings are available for all pipe dimensions of the FRIATHERM®
rigid system. The solutions have been tested and approved.
Arrange the Conlit trays in the centre of the ceiling or wall passage and fix them by means of adhesive tape. Conlit shellwith or without aluminium coating can be used.
Mind the minimum distances between Conlit trays (see Figures 1 to 4). Usually, mounting pipe insulation results in thecreation of a gap between the pipes. Consequently, the minimum pipe distances listed below can be ignored in practice.Hence, the distance between the trays within the pipe passage can be selected at will for the tested FRIATHERM® rigidpipelines.

Calculation of Planning and Mounting Periods
Mounting periodsMounting periods are empirical values. These standardvalues are expressed in man-minutes (one person perminute) and apply to the net mounting time required, including
- provision of materials and tools at the place of mounting- reading and transferring plans and pipeline guidance- preparing and laying pipes and fittings
The special tasks
- preparing the construction site- secondary work (knocking in etc.)- insulation work- cleansing/flushing and pressure test
are not included in the general mounting period.
Surcharge calculationDepending on the relevant laying method, a surcharge of50% to 80% may be assumed for wages incurring forfittings and connector pieces as well as for relatedmaterials. Add this surcharge to salary, wages and materialcosts.
This surcharge varies in keeping with the pipe guidance, the type and extent of the construction project as well asmounting/installation conditions and company-specificcircumstances. Consequently, recalculation of mountinginstallation costs and determination of project-relatedsurcharges constitute a sound and safe measure forspecifying the costs of further projects.
