Deep Learning• Looking for meaning and being curious about the subject you are

studying

• Be active and collaborate with other students and your eLA

• Make connections between the different topics you study in a unit

• Link your studies to real life

• Relate new knowledge to what you knew before

Surface Learning• Relying on rote learning or memorising

• Seeing unit content simply as ‘stuff’ you need to learn for the exam

• Not dedicating enough time to your studies, taking a cynical view of your education, studying a degree only to get the qualification

Study tip 1: Take useful notes

Read actively

The goal of taking study notes should be to condense and

organise information

Put information you read into your own

words

Think about how you might apply the information to

address a problem

Keep your notes organised, so you can

refer back to them

Page 13: Planning and Study Techniques Tonight [s Collaborate ... · Study tip 3: Try different learning styles • There is no ONE way to learn something. • Some people learn best from

Study tip 2: Collaborate with others• Engage with one another using Connect

on Student Portal.• Share information and speak with other

students in your course using Discussion Boards within Blackboard

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from each other.

• Don’t be shy to create or discover an existing Facebook group to talk about your course.

• Get social, build a community and support network with one another, only you will understand what another online student is going through.

Study tip 3: Try different learning styles• There is no ONE way to learn

something. • Some people learn best from watching

others, from getting their hands dirty, through listening, and more.

• Everyone learns best in his or her own way.

• Try new learning styles. By trying new techniques, you can figure out what method(s) works best for you.

• Try new ideas, adapt them and add to them. Then suggest them to other students on Connect!

Study tip 4: Give mind-mapping a goStudy tip 4: Give mind-mapping a go

Mind mapping allows you to improve and accelerate your thinking and learning skills.

Mind maps can be applied to just about any topic. They help produce clearer ideas/lines of thought and ultimately enhance an assignment.

Why not try a Mind Mapping App:MindNodeiThoughtsXMindManagerMindMeisterCoggleScapple

Study tip 5: Keep Motivated

Sometimes it’s hard to be motivated to finish assignments in an online course. This is normal!

Keep in touch with classmates – they will be going through a similar experience, and be able to provide you support not everyone can offer.

Keep in mind why you are enrolled in the first place. Think of the big picture you have for yourself.

Talk to your eLA, or an SLO. They will point you in the right direction when you have a question.

Ask questions

Clarify availability, responsibilities and deadlines

Sometimes it doesn’t go well Tell your eLA as soon as possible

Remember everyone is different with different priorities and skills sets

The person is more important than the

problem

Expect the worst and hope for the best

– people won’t change just because you

want them to.

A good team will…..Listen and respect each other, take responsibility and enjoy the process

Academic expectations at University

Academic integrity – Means honesty and responsibility in all assignments and assessments.

This means that all academic work results from an individual’s own efforts, not Wikipedia.

Assessment Perception Assessments can be

challenging and may be viewed by students as hurdles to overcome before ‘normal’ learning can continue.

Adjusting perception of assessments can impact positively on performance and approach to future tasks

Assessments can be viewed as an opportunity for reflection. You can make changes or seek support based on your answers to the reflective questions.
