Passive House is a building standard that is truly energy effi cient, comfortable and affordable at the same time. Passive House is not a brand name, but rather a tried and true construction concept that can be applied anywhere. Yet, a Passive House is more than just a low-energy building:

Passive Houses make effi cient use of the sun, internal heat sources and heat recovery, rendering conventional heating systems unnecessary throughout even the coldest of winters. During warmer months, Passive Houses make use of passive cooling techniques such as strategic shading to keep comfortably cool.

Passive Houses are praised for the high level of comfort they offer. Internal surface temperatures vary little from indoor air temperatures, even in the face of extreme outdoor temperatures. Special windows and a building envelope consisting of a highly insulated roof and fl oor slab as well as highly insulated exterior walls keep the desired warmth in the house – or undesirable heat out.

A ventilation system imperceptibly supplies constant fresh air, making for superior air quality without unpleasant draughts. A highly effi cient heat recovery unit allows for the heat contained in the exhaust air to be re-used.

Passive Houses allow for energy savings of up to 90% compared with typical building. Because of this drastic reduction in energy use, the addition of a modest Solar PV (electric) array on the roof can make building NET ZERO, or even NET POSITIVE.

The design of the STABLES intentionally arranges the homes to face south to maximize optimal solar gain in the winter, while roofs and overhangs shade the windows in the summer.

the STABLES walls & roofs are insulated with a combination of dense pack cellulose cavity insulation and continuous Poly-Iso rigid board insulation to maximize R-value as well as Air Tightness. WALLS: R-34 / ROOF: R-52

the STABLES windows & doors are triple pane insulated windows by Intus. These European built windows are a mix of fi xed and inswing tilt-turn casements.

the STABLES ventilation system is constantly bringing in fresh air and exhausting stale air to provide with highest indoor air quality possible. The Ultimate Air HRV allows the capture of heat / cold from the exhaust to temper the incoming fresh air, as well as fi ltering & dehumidifying.


VENTILATION SYSTEM (HRV)

An energy monitoring system has sensors in each space recording carbon dioxide levels, temperature, and relative humidity. The system also col-lects information on electrical consumption from each circuit in the home. Homeowners can monitor energy use, indoor temperature, relative humidity, air quality as well as control the thermostat on a user-friendly website from a computer or mobile device.
