Navigating the career minefieldThere has been a lot of talk surrounding the mining sector in Western Australia lately

and Hays Recruitment Senior Regional Director Simon Winfield said the industry had

definitely experienced a shift.

“I don’t think it’s any secret

that for a number of reasons

it’s a little quieter than it was

– certainly the market has

softened a bit from January

and February – but there

are still skills in demand,” Mr

Winfield said.

He said there had been a

move away from exploration

towards a focus on

production efficiency with

more emphasis on cost, which

meant that not as many new

personnel were required.

But he said there were still

opportunities available for

people with niche skills.

“We’ve still got strong

opportunities in the mining

engineering space for

qualified and experienced

mining engineers, both

surface and underground, and

there are still opportunities in

production maintenance and

planning as it is traditionally a

skills shortage area,” he said.

Fixed plant maintenance is

an area still requiring both

blue and white collar workers,

but Mr Winfield said these

opportunities were suited

to skilled personnel with

experience.

“We’ve got some strong job

flow in certain markets but

certainly it’s not as buoyant

as it was 12 months ago,” he

said.

“It’s not all doom and gloom

as new mines are still going

into production but you’ve

got to be realistic when

job hunting. It will take a

bit longer, there are fewer

prospects and you need to

make yourself stand out from

the competition more.”

In the future, Mr Winfield said

investor confidence would be

critical to the ongoing growth

and success of the industry.

“If we can get confidence

back in commodities,

companies will invest in new

projects and exploration.

“With that return in

confidence more investors will

be keen to be involved. I think

the government has a part to

play as well, in that Australia

is an expensive place to

operate and I think they could

help reinvigorate the fire, so

to speak.”

It’s not all doom and

gloom as new mines

are still going into

production but you’ve

got to be realistic

when job hunting. It

will take a bit longer,

there are fewer

prospects and you

need to make yourself

stand out from the

competition more.

Global opportunities in mining and resourcesWhen you think of mining resources, Western Australia is often at the forefront of people’s

minds, but this global industry can open up multiple opportunities for professionals.

According to MECS Africa

Managing Director Roland

Glass, there are many

opportunities for skilled

workers in the mining and

resources industry, particularly

in Southern Africa.

With the downturn in Western

Australia’s mining industry

and a large flow of mining

investment between Western

Australia and Africa, Southern

Africa is an ideal place for

Australians to further their

mining careers.

Mr Glass said MECS Africa was

continuously searching for

talented people with skills that

weren’t always found in the

domestic labour market.

“There are skills and

competency in demand in the

mining sector and countries

like Mozambique, which

continue to expand their

mining industry,” he said.

“The labour supply is however

not in the volume and quality

required.

“So there are definitely

opportunities in South

Africa and across the

African continent for mining

professionals.”

Mr Glass said the downturn

in mining activity was a

global issue, but there was

still definite activity and

development in Africa.

“Our view is optimistic,” he

said.

Resource sector demands ‘job ready’ laboratory staffSpecialist laboratory roles may not immediately come to mind when considering employment

in WA’s mining and resources sector, but LabTech Training (LTT) is well aware of the demand

from the resources industry for qualified laboratory staff.

The Australian Small Training

Provider of the Year provides

vocational training and

education from the Laboratory

Operations Training Package

MSL09, to workplace trainees

around the country, and also

delivers nationally recognised

qualifications directly to

individual learners at LTT’s

state-of-the-art Osborne Park

training facility.

“We ensure our students are

taught on the latest industry

equipment so that they

complete their laboratory

operations qualification ‘job

ready’, meeting the constant

need from commercial

laboratories that support the

resources sector,” LTT General

Manager Jason Allen said.

“There is also a demand for

qualified lab staff in onsite

laboratories run by resource

companies, and these roles can

include sought-after FIFO or

DIDO positions.”

Laboratory technicians and

technical officers are needed

across a wide field of industries,

from metals and minerals or oil

and gas testing to pathology,

food testing and biotechnology.

LTT’s fee-for-service courses at

its purpose-built training facility

provides a vocational education

stream for independent learners

who wish to prepare for entry

into, or advance their career

options, in the resource industry.

Qualifications from Certificate

II through to Advanced Diploma

are offered to support students

at different stages of their

learning and career path.

Recognition of Prior Learning

(RPL) is offered as part of

the training and assessment

delivery, to ensure that

students are able to translate

their existing knowledge

and experience into a formal

qualification.

LTT holds free one-hour

information sessions every

Friday from 11.30am at its

Osborne Park training centre.

The limited places can be

booked by contacting LTT on

1300 588 588.

Hands on training for the real worldSince its inception in 1992 the Construction Skills Training Centre or CSTC as it is more

widely known, has become the first port of call for those seeking a viable career in

the construction and associated industries.

The centre, which was

originally based on a similar

and very successful operation

in Canada, now has more

than 5000 graduates a year

from its various training

courses in WA and more than

6000 businesses regularly

use its training programs. The

CSTC offers more than 45

courses.

Set on more than 10,000

square metres in Welshpool,

the centre has 10 classrooms

to conduct theory based

courses as well as modern

equipped yard space. It

is one of the few training

centres in Australia to have a

giant Potain tower crane on

site.

This is not a ‘pretend training

centre’ – you can expect to

be trained using the best

equipment that is used on

the actual job and be trained

by professionals who have

had real world experience.

This is what sets the CSTC

apart and the reason why

the CSTC is considered

an industry leader in

construction training.

Apart from practical

applications, the CSTC also

provides theoretical as well

as safety awareness and

safety training related to

many of its courses.

What surprises most people

are the CSTC’s competitive

costs for courses. It costs

no more to be trained at the

CSTC than other training

centres; in fact many courses

are cheaper than a lot of

other training centers.

“We are working to provide

high quality training at

prices that make our training

accessible to everyone,”

CSTC Manager Les

Wellington said.

The centre is also arguably

the leading educator and

provider of white cards for

construction industry safety

awareness in WA. The CSTC

has always led the way with

safety related issues, and it

was the first training centre

to design and tailor courses

specifically for asbestos

removal.

Individual or group company

bookings are welcome. Call

the CSTC on 9358 6501 for a

full list of available courses

and to discuss requirements.

No signs of slowing downMade up of two companies, Maca Mining and Maca Civil, MACA Ltd is a leading mining

and civil construction company with more than 1000 experienced personnel.

The organisation offers

contract mining, civil

earthworks including initial

roadworks and tailings dams,

drill and blast, crushing

and screening and material

haulage solutions.

MACA Mining is currently

working on approximately

11 projects in Western

Australia and one in South

Australia with major clients

such as Atlas Iron and Regis

Resources.

The civil side has just

undergone a major

management restructure and

HR Manager Tony Easton said

it was looking to expand.

“In the mining side we’ve got

20 to 30 per cent growth

year-on-year,” he said. “We’re

growing at a considerable

rate and securing a long-term

client base.”

However he acknowledged

the mining sector had

changed over the last 12

months.

“The current market is a little

bit cautious – there are still

projects going ahead but

a lot more scrutiny in costs

these days. Financially we’re

in a very strong position

which is attractive to clients,

but we remain cost aware,”

Tony said.

MACA Ltd maintains strong

core values and instills a ‘can

do’ attitude in its people.

It also offers a number

of career pathways,

including apprenticeships

and graduate engineering

programs, offered to high

caliber graduates who have

demonstrated their success

in the company’s vacation

employment program.

Looking ahead, Tony is

confident of the company’s

future success, with interstate

expansion plans already in

the pipeline.

“We have a strong order

book in excess of several

billion dollars, so the line

of work we’re going into is

very strong compared to

competitors.”

Financially we’re in a very

strong position which is

attractive to clients, but we

remain cost aware.

The ore sourced from these

deposits is blended, crushed

and screened into a direct
