Functions of Leaves
● Manufacture food for the plant – through process of photosynthesis
●Equation for Photosynthesis: CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 + O2
●Photosynthesis only occurs when light is present
Leaf Terms● Epidermis: outside layer of the leaf (leaf
surface)
●Stomata: openings in the leaves where carbon dioxide comes in from the atmosphere (needed for photosynthesis)
●Transpiration: the loss of water vapor from the plant; most water is lost from the stomata, some through the cuticle layer
A typical leaf contains:
Leaf Blade
Petiole
Node
Leaf Activity
Take one sheet of colored paper
Leaf Activity
Fold the paper “hamburger style”
Leaf Activity
Fold the paper one more time, making it look like a book.
Leaf Activity
Unfold the paper and have it laying “hot dog style”
Leaf Activity
Fold right and left sides into the middle fold.
Leaf Activity
Fold the paper in half, so it looks like a book. And then fold it again.
Leaf Activity
Unfold the paper to where it looks like this:
Leaf Activity
Rip the paper where it is folded, making 8 flaps
You should be able to make 8 flaps. Please see the example.
Leaf Activity
● Fold the top corners of each flap:
Leaf Activity
● See example that is on the Elmo Cam. Please make yours look like the example.
Filling it out
● The next slides will show you the different types of leaf patterns. (The same ones that are on your folded paper)
● When you see that type of leaf, please open the flap and draw the picture of that leaf.
Example
Simple
Open the flap and draw the pictures
● If there is more than 2 leaves that you need to draw, then squeeze them in.
