The President’s Corner

You know, this winter is getting way to long. I know that because I have no inspiration when I sat down to write this article. No idea what I want to pass on. But, there is a deadline and I must get something in the newsletter. Maybe if you all told me you don’t even read the President’s Corner, and I could even stop writing it, now that would bring a spring to my step! But, for now, I have to write something. As you read through the newsletter, you will see that we are winding down on our program year. Only 2 more meetings after March. And I’m thinking it’s a pretty good line up. We have the tour in a couple of weeks, then a speaker on synchroness flow manufacturing. Since I had to look up the word to make sure I spelled it correctly (and I’m still not sure I have), you can bet that I don’t know much about this topic. And that is always a good thing. And finally in May, we have our top management night. Please bring your bosses and they get to eat free! We have a speaker that will talk about lean in a medical setting. That speaker is Tammy Williams. Some of you may remember Tammy, as she has been involved in APICS for many years. In fact, she has just been elected to represent our District on the APICS Board of Directors. Tammy now works for the Mayo Clinic and she will share with us her lean experiences in a non-manufacturing setting. All the remaining programs should be very interesting, so plan on joining us. The food is great, and not real expensive, and the company is outstanding!!! Now, if you are hankering to expand your leadership skills, I have the perfect opportunity for you. You can join the SoMN APICS Board of Directors. We are a good group, if I must say so myself, and we have a pretty good time developing our programs and having a successful chapter. So, you would learn about managing a small business and, depending on the role you would want to play, could really expand your leadership skills. Now that would look good on a resume. So, if you are the least bit interested, please chat with any of our Board members. They would be more than willing to fill you in on the details. Afraid of the time commitment? Well, we have really worked on keeping our time together as short as possible. So, we hold monthly board meetings after the PDM. Which really reduces the time away from your families. Give it some thought, and let any of us know if you are interested. Well, that’s it. You will be getting our annual survey soon. Please take the 10 minutes needed to fill it out. We really do use it as we plan for our next program year. See you soon. Barb

ABOUT CABELA’S

Cabela’s, the World’s Foremost Outfitter in beautiful Owatonna Minnesota is a 150,000 square foot building specializing in hunting, camping and outdoor gear. The lodge pole pine logs were harvested from trees damaged in the 1994 Little Wolf Creek forest fire north of Whitefish Montana. It took more than 700 tons of Minnesota field stone, picked by hand, to build the new facility. We have two ponds covering two acres each and filled with many different species of game fish. Conservation Mountain located inside our facility is 98 feet deep, 88 feet wide and 35 feet tall. It features 100 game mounts from throughout North America.

Other features of our Store include “Autumn legends” the three times life size sculpture of two majestic whitetail deer, which measures 26 ½ feet tall and weighs over eight tons. The sculpture, by wildlife artist Dick Idol, was more than a year in the making. The aquariums hold approximately 54,000 gallons of water. All animals in our displays were taken legally and are legal to possess. We also have two museum-quality habitat dioramas featuring African plains game and the Big Five of African Game.

We at Cabela’s are looking forward to your visit and hope we can give you a little insight to our operation. We will be taking you on about a 45 minute tour of our building including some of our backrooms and talk a little bit about our supply chain operation. My Inventory manager and my Receiving Manager will be conducting the tour and would be happy to entertain any questions that you may have. Once again we look forward to your visit

Editor’ Notes I don’t know about y’all, but I like tours. I like the opportunity to see an organization operate from a different perspective. One of the benefits of APICS is the networking that can be accomplished. Participating in a tour allows us to meet and network with folks that we might not associate with in our normal jobs, or our chapter meetings. I am looking forward to seeing all of you there on the 8th. You are encouraged to invite non-members to all of our meetings. I am also interested in your feedback and suggestions.

Quizmaster

1. (Trivia) Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, of the band The Beatles, are both left handed. 2. It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time. This little test should help you get started. During a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criteria is that defines if a patient should be institutionalized. "Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub." Okay, here's your test: 1. Would you use the spoon? 2. Would you use the teacup? 3. Would you use the bucket? "Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would choose the bucket, as it is larger than the spoon." What was the director's response? 3. Emperor Akbar once ruled over India. He was a wise and intelligent ruler, and he had in his court the Nine Gems, his nine advisors, who were each known for a particular skill. One of these Gems was Birbal, known for his wit and wisdom. The story below is one of the examples of his wit. Do you have it in you to find out the answer? A farmer and his neighbour once went to Emperor Akbar's court with a complaint. "Your Majesty, I bought a well from him," said the farmer pointing to his neighbour, "and now he wants me to pay for the water." "That's right, your Majesty," said the neighbour. "I sold him the well but not the water!" The Emperor asked Birbal to settle the dispute. How did Birbal solve the dispute?
