2. EAFT Activities

2.1 International Symposium in Bucharest

On 13–14 November 2017 an International Symposium on Terminology and Translation was held at the University of Bucharest’s Applied Modern Languages and Translation-Interpretation sections in the French Language and Literature Department (DLLF) at the Foreign Languages and Literatures Faculty.

The success of the event, largely due to the support, financial and otherwise, of the AUF and the EAFT, was a collective achievement. Participants came from far and wide and presented a number of interesting talks.

Special mention should be made of the interpreters, Gabriela Monica Stegaru and Cosmin Băduleţeanu, who provided excellent interpretation between French, Romanian and English.

The event was mentioned in Romanian local academic press: http://infoub.unibuc.ro/2017/11/adunarea-generala-a-asociatiei-europene-de-terminologie-aet-la-bucuresti/

2.2 Training workshop in terminology for students of Master and Bachelor programs in Translation and Interpretation at the University of Bucharest

At the invitation of the Centre de Réussite Universitaire in the University of Bucharest (CRU-UB) and the French Department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Henrik Nilsson (TNC) gave some talks and conducted several workshops, 13–16 November 2017, targeted at master and bachelor degree students in translation-interpretation and applied modern languages, as well as their terminology and specialized translation trainers. These focused on the Swedish experience in terminology and specialized translation, national and European terminology databases, the terminologist’s profile and the relationship between terminology and translation. Henrik Nlsson was then invited for a second time, 25–26 October 2018. This time he taught two workshops for translator students at different levels, gave an open lecture on national termbanks with research group GREI (Groupe de recherche étudiante intégrée) and ContrasTER, discussed the didactics of terminology with other teachers and participated in a course on French economic language.

2.3 Challenges of Terminology Strategy in the Hungarian Language Area

On 9 March 2018, the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy and the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd. organised a conference titled “Challenges of Terminology Strategy in the Hungarian Language Area”. The conference aimed to discuss the issues of the Hungarian terminology strategy, its current situation and tasks for the near future. The conference was opened by Katalin É. Kiss, head of the Presidential Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences called ‘The Hungarian Language in Sciences’; the opening speeches were held by Attila Tóth, Director of the Institute for Hungarian Language Strategy and Gabriella Németh, Director of the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation. Conference speakers were: Gábor Tolcsvai Nagy, Gábor Prószéky, Eszter Papp, Ágnes Kuna, Zsófia Ludányi, Dóra Tamás, Ágota Fóris, Andrea Bölcskei from Hungary; Attila Benő and János Péntek from Romania; and Gizella Szabómihály from Slovakia.

2.4 Terminology Research in Musicology and the Humanities, Zagreb, 25–26 May 2018

The first international conference on the role of terminology in the humanities, Terminology research in musicology and the humanities, was held in Zagreb on 25–26 May 2018 at the Music Academy of the University of Zagreb. Jointly organized by the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics and the University of Zagreb Music Academy within the research project ʺProblems of basic contemporary musical terminology in Croatia (CONMUSTERM)“, and financially supported by the Croatian Science Foundation and the EAFT, the conference gathered terminologists, linguists and musicologists from all over the world. A rich conference programme comprised two keynote lectures, a plenary session and 42 presentations altogether. The first keynote lecture was given by Markus Bandur (University of Detmold Paderborn), who talked about terminology in the context of music historiography and analysis. On the second day of the conference, Mojca Pecman (University of Paris Diderot) gave an overview of contemporary terminological research in her lecture ʺInnovation, creativity, and knowledge construction as a matter of terminology“. Three of the EAFT Board members participated in the conference by presenting their own work: Henrik Nilsson talked about terminology from the education and cultural heritage sectors, as well as Eszter Papp, who discussed the planning of a multilingual terminological database in the field of education in a joint presentation with Ágota Fóris; Sandra Cuadrado Camps gave a presentation on terminology discourse in the digital era based

on the case of the humanities terminology in TERMCAT's projects. Another EAFT Board member, Ana Ostroški Anić, apart from being actively involved in the organization of the conference, took part in the plenary session about the research project Conmusterm. The conference proceedings are to be published in a special issue of the peer reviewed scientific journal Rasprave, published by the Institute of the Croatian Language and Linguistics.

2.5 Proceedings Summit 2016

Following some delay, work on the proceedings from the Summit 2016 have been finalized and will be presented at the Summit in San Sebastián.

2.6 Map for terminology in Europe

In collaboration with Termcat, EAFT has elaborated a map for Terminology in Europe. In this map you will find organizations associated with EAFT and dedicated to the creation, standardization and dissemination of terminology in Europe. They are classified as universities, official centres, national associations and networks, and international associations.

2.7 TOTh co-operation

EAFT has supported TOTh conferences (Terminology and Ontology: Theories and applications) since 2010. 2 EAFT members are part of the steering committee: Christophe Rocheand Rute Costa.

The TOTh Conference took place at the Savoie Mont-Blanc University (Chambéry, France) on 7–8 June 2018. The TOTh conferences aim to assemble researchers, industrialists, practitioners and, in a more general way, everyone whose interests concern terminology, language, and knowledge engineering. Proceedings will be published in “Terminologica” (http://toth.condillac.org/terminologica).

2.8 “Incorporation” of IITF

Since 2017 and throughout 2018, the Board of the EAFT has been communicating with the Board of the IITF about the possibilities of “lodge” the IITF and its activities within the EAFT. The members of the IITF have decided not to continue the activities and the idea that has been discussed concerns the possibility of creating a SIG (special interest group) within the EAFT devoted to research in terminology. That way, the resources and the activities of the IITF could continue “under another roof”. The IITF Journal could then also be a channel for the publication of e.g. the summit proceedings and the candidates for the ITAs. This will hopefully be settled during the final part of 2018.

2.9 EAFT website

The EAFT Secretariat is commissioned to ensure that the EAFT corporate identity will be used in a correct way by using the same visual system throughout all its interactions (events, documents, website, merchandise). The EAFT website has been revamped to achieve this goal, assuring that the EAFT brand is used in the same way through all the sections on the website.

Please find the statistics summary for the EAFT website that shows some interesting data which confirm a positive tendency regarding the number of visits to our site.

2017Number of visits: 408,369

2016Number of visits: 165,609

2015Number of visits: 72,424

2014Number of visits: 61,469

The number of visits has increased significantly comparing with the visits registered in the previous year. And, probably, the significant increase of the number of visits is due to news through Twitter which are linked to the site.

The most popular pages are the ones related to the news and EAFT activities, such as the Terminology Summit, and the Newsletter. The most downloaded contents include

the newsletter and the contributions presented at the Summit. Therefore, these are the points we should continue highlighting during next year. According to the statistics, it has been proven that the largest number of visits coincides with the launch of the Newsletter every month.

Geo map overlayThe volume of visitors coming from various locations around the world is shown below. The largest points indicate locations driving the most visitors to our site. Although the largest number of visits are from Europe, it should also be noted appreciated that large number of visitors come from China, the US and even South America.

2.9.1 NewsletterThe EAFT newsletter is launched every month – except August, which is covered by the July issue – in order to maintain an active and regular means of communication among all members.

The Newsletter is divided into four sections:

News: a section aiming to inform about new projects or initiatives organized by the Association’s members.

Agenda: this section is devoted to the international terminological agenda and informs of events which can be of interest to all members.

Suggestions: this third section encourages all members to share their news and events in upcoming issues of the newsletter.

Articles: this fourth section is aiming to improve knowledge exchange among EAFT members. This section allows recent papers or publications from members to be highlighted.

The Newsletter’s sections are fed by contributions mainly from EAFT members. The contributions can be sent in English or in French or in both, and also in every member’s language.

Since January 2015, Mailchimp (an online email marketing solution to manage contacts, send emails and track results) is used to launch the newsletter.

To date, EAFT counts more than 160 Newsletter subscriptions and has published 85 issues. More than 30 members have shared their information through this channel (such as TERMNET, IULA, REALITER, ELETO, Civil Society Platform, ISO/TC37, GTW (The Association for Terminology and Knowledge Transfer), TERMCAT, etc.). All issues are available on the EAFT website, on the Newsletter page.

2.9.2 Twitter

EAFT’s Twitter account has already 759 followers (669 in 2107), among others active members of the European terminology scene. We count also on the support of the following EAFT institutional members: DGTRAD, DCU Languages Service, Foras na Gaeilge, RITERM, Språkrådet, TERMCAT, Translations UK, Xarxa Vives, UZEI, just to name a few. Offering a regular set of news through a media channel, such as Twitter, has contributed to increasing the number of visits to the EAFT site. Contributions and news about our activities are fed and encouraged by the Secretariat and EAFT followers. Posts, mentions and retweets reflect the dynamism of terminology in Europe together with an active promotion of multilingualism. All tweets and mentions can be followed through the EAFT twitter account https://twitter.com/_eaft.

2.10 Visits

2.10.1 EAFT visits GeorgiaThe EAFT President, Henrik Nilsson, was invited to the first international terminology conference held in Tbilisi, Georgia, at the Tbilisi State University. The conference, with the subtitle “Heritage and Modernity”, was an impressive event, with several parallel sessions where different parts of Georgian terminology work were presented. There were also papers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Thailand and Colombia: Albina Auksoriutė (former president of Infoterm) and Juan Carlos Díaz Vásquez (vice-president of Infoterm) gave papers and participated in a round table on terminology management.

Terminology work is far from new in Georgia – it has a very long tradition, dating back to early religious texts. There have been local terminology conferences before, such as that of 2013, and recently the third issue of the journal “Terminological Issues” (ტერმინოლოგიის საკითხები) was published. This was followed in 2018 with the publication of the book “Problems of Georgian Terminology” (ივანე ჯავახიშვილის სახელობის თბილისის სახელმწიფო უნივერსიტეტი) written by conference organizers Lia

Karosanidze and Ana Khurtsilava, both from the Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics.

Henrik Nilsson also had the opportunity to meet with the newly formed Vukol Beridze Association for Terminology, and the members discussed problems, solutions and possible ways to co-operate. Henrik also paid a visit to the newly appointed State Language Department, housed at the Prime Minister’s office. He also gave two short television interviews and appeared in a live morning TV show, together with Tsitsi Gabeskiria, who has worked on mathematical terminology.

2.10.2 Taaguutit - terminology training in Nuuk, GreenlandThe EAFT President Henrik Nilsson has visited Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland, https://uk.uni.gl/about-us.aspx) where he was invited by Arnaq Grove as guest teacher at the translation and interpretation programme. His course “Taaguutit” (Terminology) for translation and interpreters (Danish-Greenlandic) within healthcare lasted two weeks, and the seven seven students were very active. He also gave an open lecture, “Terminologiarbejde i stort og småt – tetraeder, trender & domænetab”, in the university auditorium where he presented the EAFT, European terminology work and domain loss (watch the whole lecture (in Danish) here: https://da.uni.gl/arrangementer/oktober-afholdt/offentligt-foredrag-om-fagsprog-terminologi.aspx). At the university is also located Oqaasileriffik/The Language Secretariat of Greenland (https://oqaasileriffik.gl/da/) which Henrik also visited.

3. Financial matters

3.1 Financial report 2017

Accounts for 2017 have been approved and signed by the auditors, Susanne Lervad and Maja Bratanić (see appendix 1).

At the end of 2017, the balance was 16 055 EUR.

The main expenditures in 2017 were the 2.500 EUR allocated to sponsor TermTrad 2017 (the International Symposium in Bucharest) and 907 euros for the Terminology Seminar in Wales.

Besides, the Secretariat was paid the agreed annual amount (1500 EUR) for necessary expenses (administrative tasks, EAFT mail campaigns, communication activities, events organization, design editing process, etc.).

It is also important to be aware that the total of the memberships fees received in 2017 only represent half of the sum expected when counting all members. It is most important that all the individuals and institutions who have traditionally been EAFT members are prepared to pay their subscriptions. If not, the accumulated capital of the association may be further reduced in following years putting at risk its financial standing in the long run and restricting future activities.

3.2 Budget 2018

Regarding the budget, on 31 December 2017, the balance registered on the bank account was 16 055 EUR.

On 30 October 2018 the balance registered on the bank account was 13 022 EUR.

To this date, the annual fees paid amount to nearly 5 500 EUR corresponding to 42 members.

The main expenditures have been allocated to cover the GA, sponsor three events: Summit in San Sebastián, Conmusterm International conference on terminology research in musicology and the humanities in Zagreb and the Terminology Conference

in Tbilisi, as well as the regular EAFT costs (Secretariat duties, meeting expenses, Chamber of Commerce fee, website domain fee, etc.).

To sum up, it is estimated that our balance at the end of the year will be 11 605 EUR (see appendix 2), which is significantly lower than the balance at the end of 2017 (16 055 EUR). The economic situation may be considered stable, but without the annual fees from our members, the association cannot go on supporting activities and may stop functioning in the long term.

4. Activity plan for 2019

4.1 Support to local terminology events

EAFT would like to continue supporting (if possible also economically) local events in 2018/2019 and encourage members to propose such events at the GA.

4.2 New SIG for research

During 2019, work with creating SIG for research and incorporating the IITF resources in it will continue (see above).

4.3 New SIG for resourcesThe eTTB project, run by Tilde will finish in February 2019, and discussions about starting a SIG within EAFT for sharing and evaluating terminological resources has been started.

4.4 New platform for teachers of terminology

During the EAFT workshop TT&T, held in 2016, the idea of creating a platform for terminology teachers where ideas, exercises etc. could be shared, was presented and we will continue working on possible ways of realizing that idea.

4.5 Continued revisions – of statutes etc.

Work on revising the statutes will continue, especially of those sections concerning the Advisory Council.

4.6 Continued membership campaign

Work on recruiting more members will also continue as will the work on finding more member benefits and new agreements.

4.7 EAFT website and Twitter account

During 2018 and 2019, we will work to improve the new sections on the website trying to keep them updated, visible and attractive for EAFT members. A revision of the contents will also be made. The possibilities of transferring the contents to a new, more easily manageable, platform will also be investigated. The option to share contents with social networks in some particular sections such as news, agenda and activities, will be explored and, if possible, implemented. At a later stage, the possibility of creating an intranet website where board documents can be stored safely and easily accessed will also be considered.

Regarding our Twitter account, we will work on reaching satisfactory communication among our members and followers aiming to encourage them to get involved in EAFT activities, news and events.

4.8 Co-operation (Georgia and Romania etc.)

A discussion about possible co-operations (teaching, joint projects. visits, events) in e.g. Georgia and Romania will continue during 2019.
