PABI Call to ACTION!On September 12, 2015, with little notification or input from the business community the Plaquemines Council filed lawsuits against 68 oil companies which have worked and/or continue to work in Plaquemines Parish. The royalties and tax revenues received from the companies involved in the oil and gas industry account for over two-thirds of our Parish Government budget and significant portions of the budgets of other taxing bodies. The PABI Board does not believe it is wise to capriciously bite the hand that feeds you without first working on a compromise. We believe the Parish Council should have taken a different approach. Rather than immediately filing suit against the oil companies, our Parish Government should have negotiated with each of them on an individual basis, to try to come to a settlement with them, and filed lawsuits as a last resort against only those companies refusing to meet their obligations.

At the last Council Meeting, Councilman Charlie Burt introduced a Resolution to dismiss these lawsuits. NOW, is our opportunity to support Mr. Burt and the oil and gas companies that do business in Plaquemines Parish, hire our families, friends and neighbors and support our local businesses.

PLEASE make every effort to be at the Council Meeting this Thursday, November 12 at Pointe ala Hache and help convince the Council to do the right thing and dismiss these suits! Your attendance will go a long way in showing the Council that business and industry DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS LAWSUIT! NOW IS THE TIME TO TAKE A STAND!

Who: ALL PABI MEMBERS/Anyone who supports Business & Industry

When: Thursday, November 12, 2015 - 1 p.m.

PLAQUEMINES FISHING REPORTSCapt. Hoop/ Our Freedom / Life is Good!

Capt. Hoop -- Continued

I had been working about 8 or 9 days straight and was looking forward to 2 days off. That evening the phone rang and I booked it. So much for the day off. I had a guy from New York and his long time friend from New Orleans wanting to go inshore here for the first time. It was another rough windy day and I knew I had to look hard for some fish. The run through the bayou was an altogether new experience for them and they enjoyed the beauty this area has to offer. My day was going to be the same tough stirred up water and high wind fishing I have been putting up with all week. we started out getting a small flounder.

She, being a beginner, was having all the luck.

I spent the morning locked in a particular area as the winds got stronger and I did not care to get out of this sheltered place to get pounded elsewhere. What talk I could pick up on the radio was not enough to make me consider moving. We never saw another boat all day.

Some of the places I wanted to fish were still too windy to fish. The power pole would not hold. The wind was blowing the boat with the pole buried in the mud and I did not want to use the anchor.

They only wanted to keep enough for a meal so I kept some to clean and give away to my neighbors.

The ride across an open bay was quite rough and I had to do a lot of maneuvering to get us across without us getting too wet.

Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

AIRLINE CAREERS

Well, I guess you know what is on my mind. It’s rainy, a little cool outside and I am thinking Christmas! I know, I know, what happened to Thanksgiving? I love Thanksgiving but, I like doing fresh flowers for my Thanksgiving table so that will be a project for another day. Don’t want my fresh flowers all wilted. Besides, I have been painting up a storm! You see, my granddaughter, Carlea’, hits me up with what she wants us to make for her class for Christmas. And she is now a prayer partner for a younger child at school so we have to make something special for her also. I actually love it when she and I get together to make things for her class. She has some pretty good crafting ideas for a 10 year old. She quite creative. I am excited about the Christmas Shopping Extravaganza on Nov. 21 at Excelaration Warehouse. And most of my family members would rather me make their gifts. I must admit I do enjoy it because I can personalize each one. Time is just going by so fast I hope I have enough to it to do everything I have to do. Wish me luck!

When I first saw this piece by Renee Mullins I just knew I had to paint it. I love yard art and this one would look so cute sitting in a flower bed (since we don’t have snow to pile around it). You can always change the colors of the jumpsuit and the scarf to suit your mood. I like making my first piece as close to the designer’s as possible after that I will venture out and change up colors. This one was painted with Deco Americana paints, sealer, and varnish. I used an outdoor sealer on it since it will be outside and is much more durable. With that I chose a Kyrlon spray sealer. I chose the non yellowing one as some do tend to turn your project yellow. So be careful when purchasing your varnish. To secure it to the stake I used Tight Bond Wood Glue. I have used it for years and find it to be very dependable. You can also use brads or staples to secure the pieces to the stake. Just be sure they will not through to the finished side. I also sealed, painted, and varnished the stake and the backs of the project. It gives it a finished look and totally protects it from the elements. If you would like to know more about this project, such a where to purchase the pattern packet or would like me to paint one for you, send me an email. This little guy was a very easy and fun piece to make.

Well, that’s my project for this time. So…what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know exactly which one, but I know it will be fun!

WET OCTOBER BRINGS LAWN DISEASE IN NOVEMBER!

The past several weekends have dumped tremendous amounts of rain into all of South Louisiana. Most of the time we could care less because it rains all the time. However, on this occasion excess rainfall during the transitionary period as our turfgrasses prepare for winter dormancy can cause some fairly serious problems. Rain events that last all day continually supply the soil with water from the environment. When the soil reaches its maximum water holding capacity the excess water will accumulate and eventually lead to runoff and flash flooding. Another concern about excess supply of water for is that the spread of pathogenic fungi.

Brown patch disease, our most prevalent disease in all southern lawns, is already starting to become apparent amongst lawns in South Louisiana. The disease starts out as circular patches of light green and yellowing leaves of grass. If you have these symptoms it is recommended to apply a fungicide in order to slow the spread and provide some protection for the rest of your lawn. All fungicides labeled for use on home lawns in the state of Louisiana show some effect on this disease. Look for Fertilome F-Stop, Green Light Fung-Away, Bayer Advanced Fungus Control for Lawns, or Scott’s Lawn Fungus Control at your local garden center or home improvement store.

TIME TO PLANT COOL SEASON ANNUALSUsually, when we get that first cool down in October many people get the itch to start switching out their annual flowers for those that perform better during the cooler months of the year. However as we all know, it can easily warm up again. To make it easier for all gardeners I always wait until November to plant cool season flowers. So here is your command. Get out and plant! Some of the cool season options you should be looking for will include: dianthus (Dianthus spp.), lobelia (Lobelia erinus), nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus), pansies (Viola x wittrockiana), petunias (Petunia x hybrida), snapdragons (Antirrhynum majus), statice (Limonium sinuatum), stock (Matthiola incana) and viola (Viola tricolor). You will find transplants at the nursery during this time of year.

FAMILIAR SMELLSThe fall time of year in the garden brings about many delights in southern gardening but one delight can’t be left out. November brings with it, the appropriate time to plant sweet pea seeds. Sweet peas have been cultivated for at least 300 years. The original sweet pea was always fragrant but displayed weak stems which made for a pathetic cut flower in a vase. Present day breeding programs have not only improved the stem strength, but also have brought about larger blooming varieties. The hardest part about growing sweet peas is the germination stage, literally, because they have a very thick seed coat. One of the tricks at improving the germination rate of sweet pea seeds is to help the seed coat physically break down. You can do this by rubbing each seed with a sheet of sand paper. This will help the seeds soak up water fast, allowing them a much needed advantage to germinate faster. Plant the seeds no deeper than twice their width in a well cultivated soil amended with a shovel or two of compost. Sweet peas will need something to climb so provide with a trellis or something to climb on in the future when the plants get big enough. Another little trick to help produce the biggest and most beautiful sweet peas is to pinch off the top of the little seedlings. This will help promote branching and provide for the solid foundations of a healthy plant. Good luck and happy planting!

This is Barbie. She is a 1 year old Chihuahua mix. Barbie and her brother Ken were surrendered by their owners to animal control because they could no longer care for them. Barbie loves attention and she is such a cuddle bug. She is very treat motivated. Barbie plays great with other dogs here at PAWS. Barbie is spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all shots.

Meet Ken! He is a 1 year old Chihuahua mix. Ken and his sister Barbie were surrendered to animal control because they could no longer care for them. Ken loves to sit on laps and to get lots of attention. He is very treat motivated. Ken is great with other dogs. He also likes to be a cuddle bug just like his sister Barbie. Ken is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on all shots.

Meet Boomer. He is a 1 year old Schnauzer mix. Boomer was an owner surrender to animal control because his owner could no longer care for him. He is house broken and very treat motivated. Boomer is very friendly to new people. He also does well with kids and other dogs. Boomer is neutered, micro-chipped and up to date on all shots.

This handsome guy is Blade. He is a friendly, outgoing 3 year old guy looking for his forever home. He enjoys cuddling and being with you. He would love to hang out with you and enjoy the day. He loves all kinds of toys and being curious. Blade tested positive for FIV (Feline Aids). Because of this disease, he has to be the only cat in the home or with another cat that is FIV positive. His life expectancy is 10-12 years. Sometimes it can be longer, depending on the health of the cat. This disease is not contagious to dogs. Blade is up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped, and neutered. Can you give Blade a forever home?

Hi! My name is Rex. I am a stunning 5 year old orange tabby looking for my forever home. I enjoy being around people. I am friendly and easy going. I enjoy toys that I have to chase and make noise. After playing, taking a nap is a must. Maybe I could cuddle next to you on the couch or maybe on your lap. Can you give me a forever home?

Donations being collected for a special dog: We have an urgent need for funds to help us save one of our dogs, Gypsy. Gypsy was adopted in January and recently was hit by a car. The vet determined she has a broken leg, and also discovered she is now heart worm positive. Due to the financial burden of surgery and heart worm treatment, Gypsy was surrendered back to us. Her return to our care is heart-breaking, but we understand the financial limitation her owner felt and are happy they did the responsible thing by getting Gypsy the help she needs through PAWS. As a no-kill rescue, we’re committed to our animals for life. Gypsy will under-go surgery to fix her leg this week and then go into a foster home to recover. Once she’s healed up, she’ll start the long road to treat heart worms. In total, Gypsy’s treatment will cost upwards of $3,000. This is a price we’re willing to pay, but we need your help in order to pay it. Donations can be made online, or by mailing a check to PAWS at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd, Belle Chasse, LA 70037. Simply mark your donation to “Gypsy” and you can help us give Gypsy a new life!

PAWS dog Gypsy needs help with the next “leg” of her journey!

TAKING A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE and STUMBLING TOWARDS THE GOVERNOR’S MANSIONBy Tony Onellion

With the Alabama victory over LSU last weekend, the stage is set for a gauntlet run the rest of this month for the Tigers to regain some respectability for perhaps the worst overall performance against the Tide in the Les Miles era. Saturday’s debacle, which temporarily derailed Leonard Fournette’s Heisman Trophy run and promoted Derrick Henry’s of Alabama, was, unfortunately, par for the course when Miles gets more than a week to “plan” for a win over the best and most disciplined program in college football. It was not clear which running back would have gained the most yards if both Henry and Fournette had run behind the disciplined Alabama line against the understaffed and much less disciplined LSU defensive run scheme. But Fournette would have not been held to his miserable totals if the teams had been reversed and Henry would have never seen 100 yards, let alone 210, if he had been in the Tigers’ backfield on Saturday night. Thanks again, Les. LSU should have seen this coming. An overrated offensive line and paper-thin defensive front seven were suspect from day one. Thank goodness Jalen Mills returned in time to have the secondary stop its bleeding. But while Alabama learns from its mistakes and becomes hardened in the fire of a coaching challenge, the Tigers remain a reflection of their “Les than fire and brimstone coach”, who finally, after 11 years, actually looked like he was chagrined and embarrassed after the pathetic performance at Bryant Denny Stadium. About time. Of course, that won’t change anything about Miles, who seems powerless to alter mediocre efforts with anything different or by actually challenging his team or himself. LSU’s special teams remain an abomination, their play calling sophomoric and frozen in the 1970’s era of Big Ten running power football. Brandon Harris is perhaps the only player on the offense that has improved and we grudgingly give much credit to Cam Cameron for that. But a man who prides himself on being an offensive line coach watches his so-called powerful offensive line being eaten up by Alabama’s unyielding defensive front seven and doesn’t or can’t do anything? And not even one damn time did this so-called offensive line actually pancake anyone or create a seam for LSU’s running game? Maybe Miles can recruit but he can’t coach these men any more and he needs to hire coaches who can and will humor (but ignore) Miles. Now LSU faces a rejuvenated Arkansas squad at home, goes to Oxford to face an angry Ole Miss team who allowed a freakish series of plays to beat them last weekend and then face Texas A&M, another “lost in the sauce” program with former LSU defensive coordinator John “Chief” Chavis licking his chops to stick a fork into Miles. Meanwhile, cancel those plans to travel to Atlanta for a first weekend in December football game and prepare for the Tigers usual mid-bowl appearance in Florida in January. We predict LSU will finish 8 and 3. Assuming Clemson wins out, following their win over Florida State last weekend, those Tigers would be ranked number one in both the polls and the four-team college playoff series while LSU drops from the top four, perhaps as far as outside the top ten. Right now, I would put Clemson first, Alabama second, Oklahoma State third and Ohio State fourth. Then I see Stanford, Notre Dame, Baylor, Iowa, Florida and Michigan State. Looking forward, our prediction is that either Michigan State or Iowa will upset Ohio State and become the number four team in the matchup. Notre Dame should lose to Stanford at the end of the season, knocking them out of the playoff picture while the loss of Baylor’s prolific quarterback dooms the Bears, along with their nasty final schedule, which includes games at TCU and Oklahoma State as well as home games against Oklahoma and Texas. Stanford will wind up as the best one-loss team during the regular season, followed by either Ohio State, Michigan State or Utah. LSU? 2016 can’t come soon enough. If this scenario comes true, Alabama would play Oklahoma State in the Cotton Bowl in the first playoff matchup and Clemson would face the Big 10 winner. Then it would be Clemson verses Alabama for the national championship and another crystal ball to Nick Saban. Meanwhile, the 100 or so four and five-star recruits who watched the Alabama/LSU game need to ask themselves: I can get to the NFL with either program because one teaches discipline while the other allows back end development in the pros that they rarely receive in the program. Do I want to spend three or four years around a genius egomaniac or a seemingly clueless, doofus-acting nice guy? The longest-lasting “nice guy” coach standing in the SEC is Mark Richt of Georgia and he probably won’t see Athens as a head coach after this season. Georgia implodes worse than LSU and that’s saying something. At least the Saints have righted their ship. Well, after Sunday, maybe not so much. But an overtime loss is a lot less embarrassing than the butt-whooping in Tuscaloosa. Meanwhile, the Saints are most likely shuffling through defensive coordinator resume’s following this season’s stumblings and the mixed bag of free agency defensive acquisitions. In election news, the super PACs have been ripping at each other in the John Bel Edwards/David Vitter race to see who succeeds absentee governor and third tier presidential candidate, Bobby Jindal. Now the Edwards camp has come out with a negative ad, positioning Senator David Vitter as a man who chose “prostitutes over patriots” in a television spot referring to a missed Senate vote when Vitter supposedly received a phone call from a prominent Washington D.C. madam. Edwards picked up a huge endorsement from Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne last week, who apparently dislikes Vitter as much as his political advertising reflected. Vitter has not received an endorsement from Scott Angelle and probably won’t. Vitter’s lack of focus and a gubernatorial agenda, clear issue positions and wishy-washy public persona is not serving the U.S. senator well and by the end of the month Vitter might be following former U.S. senator Fred Thompson’s physical death this month with a political demise of his own. No, I am not a Democrat. I’m an independent with strong conservative and Republican leanings but this state can’t afford another to add to a series of bad governors, including Blanco, Edwin Edwards’ last two stints and Jindal, or nearly invisible ones, like Roemer, Treen and Foster. Edwards has a strong military background while Vitter doesn’t seem to have a strong background in anything other than politics. John Bel Edwards does have connections to Obama but so does Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie. Maybe the slogan this year should be “vote for the Democrat….it’s important.” Hold your nose, forget the party…vote. What in hell did Jindal do for us the last term? On paper, he was the sharpest tool in the box when he ran eight years ago. Now he’s just a tool. It looks like the St. Tammany Sheriff’s race will end with a whimper, not a bang. Not much has been thrown out there as Scott Illing has not made any decision to back either Jack Strain or Randy Smith. Smith needs Illing’s backing as Strain was very close to re-election in the primaries and what might have been considered the development of a nasty smear race earlier this year has been far from the same. Fourth place candidate Jennifer Werther has endorsed Smith which could help him make up some of the gap between he and Strain. In St. Bernard, the ouster of David Peralta outweighs any decision the voters make between Wayne Landry and Guy McInnis for parish president. The only real “sit back and wait” race seems to be Billy Nungesser and Kip Holden running for Lieutenant Governor. In an office known more for tourism, I don’t see either candidate doing much in that area for Louisiana as their backgrounds are more administrative than pro-active. -0-
