What is Plasma and Corona Surface Treatment?

Improved Bonding 54 Improved Bonding

Improved Bonding

It is often necessary to bond plastic materials to metals or other plastic materials, or simply to print on a plastic surface. To do this successfully, the liquid adhesive, or ink, should be able to wet the surface of the material. Wettability depends on one specific property of the surface: surface energy,

also often referred to as surface tension.

The poor wettability of polymers presents the designer with the problem of bonding or decorating these materials. Surface treatment can improve the wettability of the material by raising its surface

energy, positively affecting adhesive characteristics by creating bonding sites. The most advanced and successful surface treatment methods are based on the principle of high-voltage discharge in air – Plasma or Corona treatment

Corona – High FrequencyCorona – Low Frequency Atmospheric Plasma Vacuum Plasma

The HV-X Corona System consists of a high-frequency generator, one or more high-voltage transformers and a treatment station. The generator produces an output signal in the 25-35 kHz frequency range, optimising the power available for treatment. The high-voltage transformer steps up the output signal from the generator to the level needed to generate a discharge of the desired intensity. The treatment station is designed around two electrodes: a treatment electrode and a counter-electrode, usually at a ground potential. The electrodes are engineered for each specific application.

The SpotTEC Low Frequency Corona System is based on the principle of high-voltage discharge under atmospheric pressure. The Corona discharge is ignited between two integrated electrodes, and an airflow from a built-in blower presses the discharge onto the substrate surface, thereby eliminating the need for a counter electrode.

The PlasmaTEC System consists of a high-frequency generator, the HV-X Plasma series, and one or more transformers with outputs for single or multiple atmospheric plasma nozzles.A high-voltage electrode inside the treatment nozzle generates the plasma discharge, which is blown outside the nozzle using oil-free compressed air. The Plasma discharge is potential-free, allowing both conductive and non-conductive surfaces to be treated.

A high-voltage glow discharge is created in a vacuum chamber, at pressures between 2 and 12 mbar, to ensure a very uniform all-over treatment of both conductive and non-conductive surfaces. The technology allows for the custom design of both the chamber sizes and electrode set-up. Dry, clean air is used as a treatment `gas´, resulting in an easy and cost-efficient method for enhancing surface adhesion and wettability.

Customised Solutions

RotoTEC-XThe patented RotoTEC-X conveyor system is used for the in-line treatment of injection-moulded parts prior to coating, printing, gluing or painting, or simply to improve wettability. The patented rotary electrode system ensures a uniform treatment level across the entire treatment width. Both single and dual-sided treatment units are available. Tantec customises the RotoTEC-X unit to meet the customer’s specifications.

VacuTECThe Vacuum Plasma Treater – VacuTEC – is a user-friendly machine. The treatment process is uniform inside the treatment chamber, allowing for the treatment of a large number of different parts without any technical adjustments being required. Using the highly effective ceramic electrodes, and treating at a pressure of 2-12 mbar, the treatment cycle is short, typically around 60-120 seconds. Treatment gases such as argon and oxygen can be applied, but in most cases this is not necessary due to the high power exposed by the Plasma discharge.

VacuLABTantec VacuLAB is a compact version of the full-scale vacuum Plasma treater, model VacuTEC. The VacuLAB makes it possible to handle small-scale testing and gives the user full control of all parameters. The results from using the VacuLAB are easily transferred into full-scale VacuTEC units. The compact VacuLAB unit is portable and can be used in various departments for a large number of treatment tests and verifications. It can even be used forlow-volume production.

Tantec RotoVAC Plasma treater is designed for the Plasma treatment of small injection-moulded plastic parts, without the need to place them in a jig or use complicated handling systems. With the RotoVAC’s rotary drum design, the drum is simply filled and placed in the vacuum chamber. The rotation will ensure that all parts are treated. The RotoVAC Plasma treater is appreciated for its simplicity of operation, reliability in production and fast process speed. Treatment gases such as argon and oxygen can be applied, but in most cases this is not necessary due to the high power exposure from the Plasma discharge.

ProfileTECTwo common applications for thepre-treatment of automotive EPDMprofiles with Plasma are prior to flocking and slip-coating. In the flocking process, treatment is necessary to achieve a strong bond between the rubber and the adhesive used to attach the flock. For slip-coating, it is necessary to treat prior to the spray coating process in order to achieve good wettability and optimum adhesion properties of the coating.

Tantec is the preferred supplier for a number of high-end medical device and automotive manufacturers worldwide.

Did you know?

Ozone is generated as a bi-product from the Corona discharge, but is easily exhausted and neutralised via Tantec Ozone Filter systems.

FoamTECTantec’s FoamTEC machine allows for in-line treatment of corrugated board, thick insulation boards, etc. As a result of the high-voltage discharge, it is possible to treat around the edges of the parts, and even in the case of changing material widths. The FoamTEC machine is designed according to the customers’ specific application, and is available for both single and dual-side treatment.
