About plastic popThe term plastic pop describes the involvement of reality TV shows and the types of

industries such as Disney which have a specific way of targeting a younger audience via the route of ‘teeny pop’. Examples of artists of the Plastic Pop industry are; Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus.

Reality TV shows such as X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and star searching for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s performances such as Oliver’s Nancy and The Sound of Music’s Maria, target a younger audience, linking to the teeny pop Idea and persona. This then links to Disney as it in itself is a large contributor and recognised source of the teeny pop genre. This is also due to the films such as High School musical, which is primarily a teeny pop genre and links to the stereotypical views of plastic pop. When it comes to Disney they gain a lot of money via the production of merchandise which is part of the plastic and teeny pop personas, when huge amounts of younger audience members which are associated with this institution buy the merchandise it means that this institution makes a huge amount of money, proving once again the manner in which the plastic pop industry makes a large amount of money.

Plastic pop gains money…When it comes to the reality TV shows, their sheer popularity which results in

vast amounts of viewers, means that they gain more money when consumers vote for a certain eventuality, e.g. who will win? Or who do you want to vote out? Also the adverts which are shown in the meantime, with such a large consumer audience will mean that more money is spent due to the increased amounts of people seeing and feeling inclined to buy whatever the advert is promoting.

Audiences really like plastic pop, in the form of reality TV shows especially, it is what they want to hear, and so by targeting what audiences are interested in hearing they in turn achieve a wider target audience. This provides more of the consumer’s money for the industry.

The Simon Cowell effectSimon Cowell is a man who is recognised in the music business for his recognition of musical talent, star management skills as well as other things. He has been very well known for his appearances on talent shows such as The X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and Pop Idol.

The Simon Cowell effect comes into play because, as he is renowned for his appearance on talent shows thus, his appearance in these programmes can in itself target and attract a wider ranged audience as people are interested in what he has to say about people and their performances. The attraction of larger audiences such as this allows more money to be made in favour of these companies and institutions.
