Ein Stoff, aus dem (die) Träume sind …Kunststoffe haben im vergangenen Jahrhundert unsere Welt zumindest so verändert wie Ferrari, Internet und bob dylan. die polymeren alleskönner führten zu völlig neuen Produkten, haben den technologischen Fortschritt wie kaum ein anderes material vorangetrieben und Ingenieuren neue Perspektiven eröffnet. ob im Fahrzeugbau oder auf der baustelle, bei Verpackungen oder in der medizin, im Haushalt oder beim Sport: Eigenschaften und anwendungs-vielfalt sind nahezu unbegrenzt. das Potenzial der Werk-stoffe ist noch längst nicht ausgeschöpft.

Österreich hat von den maschinen über die Rohstoffe bis zur Verarbeitung eine höchst beachtliche tradition und eine noch aufregendere und verheißungsvollere Zukunft. Ein ganz wesentlicher bereich in diesem Zusammenhang ist das exzellente ausbildungssystem. als einer der erfolg-reichsten und wirtschaftlich stärksten Sektoren bietet die Kunststoffbranche zahlreiche Karrierechancen für innova-tiv denkende, leistungsbereite menschen. die österreichi-sche Kunststoffbranche engagiert sich daher auch beispiel-gebend für den eigenen Nachwuchs: Kaum ein anderer Wirtschaftsbereich bietet so viele hochqualifizierte ausbil-dungsplätze. Sei es in renommierten Firmen, in einschlägi-gen Schulen oder an Fachhochschulen und universitäten.

So hat in den letzten tagen des Jahres 2008 die montan-universität Leoben erste umsetzungsschritte zur Etablie-rung der Kunststofftechnik als „European center of Excel-lence“ präsentiert. Ziel dieses Exzellenz-Programmes ist es, die Kunststofftechnik in Lehre und Forschung zu einer in-ternational herausragenden Einrichtung mit starker aus-strahlung in das ausland sowie in Wachstumsregionen zu entwickeln. besonders aktiv sind im Kunststoff-bildungsbe-reich vor allem auch die bundesländer oberösterreich (u. a. durch den Kunststoffcluster mit rund 220 unternehmen, 35.000 beschäftigten und sechs milliarden Euro Jahresum-satz) und Vorarlberg sowie das ofi-Kunststoffinstitut des acR im dritten Wiener Gemeindebezirk.

Stuff that dreams are made of…during the past century, plastics and synthetic materials have had a great impact on our world, as least as much as the Ferrari, the Internet and bob dylan. Polymeric jacks of all trades are used to make completely new products, pushing forward technical progress like no other material and providing engineers with new possibilities. Whether for automobile manufacturing or at construction sites, for packaging or in the field of medicine, at home or for sport: the variety of possible properties and uses is nearly unlimited, and the resulting potential is far from being exhausted.

austria has a considerable amount of tradition with plastics and synthetic materials, from machinery to raw materials and processing, and an even more exciting and promising future. From the right additives and processing to biodegradable materials, a vast amount of innovation, know-how and exportable services and products have been produced over the past decades.

an important factor that enables this growth is the country’s excellent educational system. as one of the most successful and economically healthy sectors, plastics offer a considerable number of career opportunities for innovative, hard-working individuals, and the domestic plastics field has done a great deal to ensure its own future: few if any other business sectors offer so many apprenticeships and opportunities to obtain vocational training that produce highly qualified workers, whether at renowned companies, schools and colleges, or universities.

For example, in the last few days of 2008, the university of Leoben presented its first steps in establishing a European centre of excellence for plastics technology. the intention of this programme is to employ teaching and research for developing plastics technology into an internationally out-standing field with a great deal of renown, both abroad and in growth regions. the most active in this field are the acR’s ofi-Kunststoffinstitut in Vienna’s third district and the states of upper austria (e.g. with the plastics cluster, which com-prises approximately 220 companies, 35,000 employees and six billion euros of annual turnover) and Vorarlberg.

auf der Fakuma Ende oktober 2008 präsentierte Engel als aktuelle Produktneuheiten u. a. die neue kleine duo pico, die e-victory mit Servohydraulik und die Erweiterung der Roboter-baureihen. duo pico bedeutet minimale Stellfläche und geringes Gewicht durch ein kompaktes Zwei-Platten-Schließsystem, höchste Energieeffizienz sowie bestes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. die e-victory gilt als ideale maschine für energiesparende Produktionen bei Werkzeugen mit hy-draulischen Kernzügen und/oder Heißkanaldüsen beim Ein-satz von hydraulischen Schnellspannsystemen. Zusätzlich wird die typenreihe der Linearroboter durch den Engel ERc 43 erweitert. damit schließt sich die bislang bestehende Lü-cke zwischen ERc 63 und ERc 33 im Schließkraftbereich von 110 bis 1.500 tonnen – ein weiterer beitrag von Engel zur Effizienzverbesserung im Spritzgießbetrieb.

at the Fakuma in late october 2008, Engel presented their newest products, such as the compact duo pico, the e-victory with servo-hydraulics and their expanded robot mo-dule lines. duo pico means a minimal footprint and low weight thanks to a compact two-platen clamping system, the highest possible energy efficiency and an excellent cost/performance ratio. the e-victory is regarded as the ideal machine for saving energy while manufacturing tools with hydraulic core pullers and/or hot nozzles for use with hydraulic quick clamping systems. In addition, the Engel ERc 43 has been added to the line of linear robots. this closes the gap between the ERc 63 and ERc 33 in the clamping force range of 110 to 1,500 metric tons - another of Engel’s contri-butions to improving efficiency in injection moulding.

Kunstfasern erreichten zu dieser Zeit gerade den europä-ischen markt (1963 erhielten die Entwickler von Polypro-pylen für ihre Innovation den Nobelpreis). mit der Serien-fertigung von Rundwebmaschinen wurde Starlinger immer mehr zum Exportunternehmen. bei der ersten österrei-chischen maschinenausstellung in Peking 1973 präsentierte Starlinger die Rundwebmaschine und in den folgenden Jahren wurden dutzende komplette Sackprojekte nach chi-na verkauft. 1990 erwarb Starlinger eine Lizenz für die Er-zeugung von bändchenextrusionsanlagen und entwickelte in weiterer Folge eigene anlagen (2006 wurde die 400. an-lage weltweit ausgeliefert).

als Global Player in der Herstellung von maschinen für die Kunststoffindustrie sowie als Weltmarktführer im be-reich der bändchenextrusionsanlagen und Rundwebma-schinen wurde 2000 die Starlinger Recycling division ge-gründet, um Recyclingtechnologie für eine breite Palette von Kunststoffen und anwendungen zu entwickeln. Heute steht Starlinger im bereich von maschinen und kompletten anlagen zur Erzeugung gewebter Kunststoffsäcke bei einer Exportquote von mehr als 99 Prozent in mehr als 130 Län-dern für Qualitäts- und technologieführerschaft.

Vergleichbare Werkzeuge benötigen bei Höchstleistung vier bis fünf Vakuumpumpen und erfor-dern dadurch wesentlich mehr Energieeinsatz. die Stromer-sparnis beträgt zwischen 50 und 80 Prozent. die technolo-gie wurde bereits weltweit patentiert. auch auf anderen Ebenen ist das unternehmen sehr aktiv: technoplast ist seit vielen Jahren an vorderster Front bei der Entwicklung von „Wood Plastic composites“, kurz WPc, beteiligt.

Ges.m.b.H. of Vienna broke new tech-nological ground in the mid-1950s with new and innova-tive spooling frames developed especially for synthetic fi-bres. at the time, such materials were just beginning to reach the European market, and in 1963, the developer of polypropylene received the Nobel Prize for her innovation. after mass production of circular looms began, Starlinger turned increasingly into an exporter. the company presen-ted its circular loom at the first austrian exhibition of ma-chinery in beijing in 1973, and in the subsequent years, dozens of complete projects for bags were sold to china. In 1990, Starlinger purchased a licence to manufacture tape-extrusion systems and developed their own after that (the 400th was delivered in 2006).

already a global player in the manufacture of machinery for the plastics industry and a leader on the world market for tape-extrusion systems and circular looms, the Starlin-ger Recycling division were founded in 2000 for the purpo-se of developing recycling technology for a wide variety of plastics and applications. today, Starlinger has an export quota of over 99% for machinery and complete systems for the production of woven plastic bags, and they are the eader in terms of quality and technology in more than 130 countries.

Technoplast Kunststofftechnik, based in micheldorf, upper austria, manufacture tools and successor lines for profile extrusion. technical competence and a high degree of innovation have enabled the company’s positive deve-lopment, resulting in recognition in the form of the SolVin award for innovations in the PVc field. tc-one (tc is short for technoplast calibration) represents the state of the art of high-performance extrusion. the advantages it offers are considerable energy savings together with noteworthy increases in the speed at which casement sections can be manufactured.

compared to conventional tools, tc-one requires nothing more than a single vacuum pump, even at maxi-mum outputs, while four to five are needed for comparable equipment, which consumes a great deal more power. the savings of electricity with tc-one amounts to between 50 and 80%, and this technology already has an international patent. the company is active in other areas as well: for several years now, technoplast have occupied the cutting edge in the development of wood-plastic composites, or WPc for short.

modern recycling plant for waste from the manufacture of PVc windows and used windows, which went into operati-on in march 2006. this entailed enlargement of the area from which Reststofftechnik obtain their waste to all neigh-bouring countries.
