Plate Tectonics Project

You will be choosing at least 100 points of work. That means you have to complete at least two products below for this project. You can complete up to 130 points to fulfill lost points if you choose. Maximum credit is 100 points. The earth systems project rubric will be used to assess this project. This form must be signed by Dr. Nelson and submitted on the date assigned.

Product choices

1. Write poems and/or sing a song about various topics of plate tectonics (40 points).

2. Write a one page paper that discusses what the earth would be like if we didn’t have plate tectonics in at least three type-written paragraphs (40 points).

3. Draw a cartoon that uses humor to explain plate tectonics using a minimum of six colored frames (40 points).

4. Create a mural or collage of plate tectonic topics. Include a one to two paragraph explanation (40 points).

5. Research a scientist who contributed to plate tectonic theory or is involved in volcanoes or earthquakes. Write a story about them on the day the announced their discovery or on their job. Research must include background information (60 points).

6. Research a major earthquake or volcano and make a diary of that experience as if you were there. Include location, type, destruction, deaths, and use your five senses (60 points).

7. Create a timeline of the development of seismology. Use pictures to depict this history (60 points).

8. Research and display your understanding of an instrument used to study shifting plates by creating a model or describing a diagram you have created (60 points).

9. Create a children’s book about seismology. The book must be illustrated. Dr. Nelson must approve this option and assign the point value based on the content of your book.

10. Create your own product. Dr. Nelson must approve this option and assign the point value based on the content of your product.
