Plate Tectonics
What is it?
What does it cause?
Table of ContentsDate Title Lesson #
8/26 Spatial Analysis 1
8/27 5 Themes of Geography 2
8/28 The 5 A’s 3
8/31 Geographer’s Tools 4
9/1 Internal Forces 5
1. Draw a line underneath wherever you left off yesterday.
2. Write the title “Internal Processes”
• Internal Forces – processes that happen inside the earth that change the land
• Example – volcanoes, earthquakes
Clip: 1. What are plates?2. Explain plate tectonics.
Rodinia, the oldest supercontinent for which we have some record, formed during the middle Proterozoic (~ 1100 million years ago) with North America in the center, South America to the east, and Australia and Antarctica to the west.
Theory of Continental Drift1. The earth was once a supercontinent called
Pangaea.
WRITE THE HEADLINE, RECORD 1-3 FOR YOUR INTRO
2. The continents slowly drifted apart over millions of years.
Jurrassic Period Cretaceous Period
3. The plates drifted and crashed into each other.
Tertiary Quartenary – 1.8 million years ago to present
1. Write Plate Tectonics Tasks in the center of your page. Number 1-9.
2. Turn to your CHAMPs section in the front of your notebook. Copy the Laptops CHAMPs chart as I go over it. When you are finished show an adult the chart and get it approved. Once your chart is approved you may get a laptop. You will need a partner as well.
3. Login = the letter S and your student ID, example s123456. The password = student09- Go to www.wgL09.wikispaces.com
4. Click 1st Six Weeks
5. Open the power point titled “Plate Tectonicsgood – 09 L.”
6. Complete all tasks and take the required notes.
CHAMPs System
This system is used to set up classroom procedures for each
activity.
Directions: Turn to the front section of your notebook where your other CHAMPs charts are located.

• In motion…
• 1. Task Sketch a picture demonstrating the theory of plate tectonics.
Effects of Plate Tectonics
What happens as a result of plate tectonic theory?
Directions:
Record the notes on each effect of plate tectonics. Complete all tasks.
Effects of Plate Tectonics
2. Effect: Mountains – when plates COLLIDE the land is forced upward

Himalayas Forming
3. Task – View the link in the headline. Explain how the Himalayas were formed.
Effects of Plate Tectonics4. Volcanoes – magma is forced upward when
ocean plates collide with continental plates

• 6. Earthquakes – as plates collide and rub together earthquakes occur
