PLATFORM

Everything that a speaker does and does not do must have proper motivation. (there must always be a good reason for any pause or movement.)Avoid mannerisms.

General Rule:

BAD POSTURE- uncomfortable sight to the listeners.

-Balance the weight of your body on both feet.

-Feet must be reasonably be apart or close together.

POSTURE:

Be fully aware of your audibility while speaking.Pay attention to the people in the last row.Be comfortably loud.

LOUDNESS:

Take into consideration the nature of the speaking situation.Speak slower and enunciate the words a little more deliberately than in ordinary conversations.

CLARITY:

Do not allow other languages and dialects affect English pronunciation.Do not be artificial.

PRONUNCIATION:

Assurance or assured expectation of the mental attitude of trust, reliance or faith.Assurance arising from reliance on one’s self.Positive feeling of the speaker.

SELF-CONFIDENCE:

Expose yourself to the language as often as possible.

GRAMMAR:

Lack of self-confidence=tension

Tension-body trembles - voice quivers - fidgety, uncomfortable - mind goes blank - stammer and stumble

CONFIDENCE AND TENSION:

1. Take care of your physical appearance. Dress appropriately and should be in harmony with the occasion.

2. Prepare well.3. Face up to your audience- look at the audience

straight in the eyes.4. Exercise before delivery and move within proper

bounds during delivery.5. Concentrate on your speech and on your

audience.

1. Shyness- personality trait- improve day to day dealings with people-speak in company-develop confidence in manner of speaking

-worry between reasonable bounds before speaking, but relax while speaking

5. Fear of the unknown-unfamiliarity with the environment and nature of listeners.-get to know way ahead of time the exact place and the listeners.

Gesture must be purposeful.Gestures should combine actions of the whole body.

GESTURES OR BODY LANGUAGE:

BASIC HAND GESTURES

1. POINTING- used to locate or identify a thing or an idea.

2. DIVIDING- extend the hand with the fingers close together and make a chopping motion or move the hand from side to side.

3. DESCRIBING OR IMITATING- both hands/ one hand are/is used to describe or imitate a certain size, shape, or movement of things such as length, height, sound.

4. APPROVAL/DISAPPROVALA- nodding the head to suggest assentD- shaking the head to suggest dissentA- clenched fist with thumb pointing upwardD- clenched fist with thumb pointing downward

5. GIVING AND RECEIVING- indicates friendly relations, exchange, giving, receiving or presenting.

-do not clamp elbows into your sides.

6. REJECTING OR RESTRAINING- used with negative ideas like “stop”, “I don’t like it”.

7. EMPHASIZING- clenched fist.

Walk to the lectern or to the platform as though you were alert and interested.

Avoid extremes in posture; not too relaxed, not too tense

Vary your posture during a speech. Avoid appearing as though your shoes were nailed to one spot.

Look comfortable and alert.Do not put your hands in your pocket.

How to achieve correct posture in public speaking:

Discover your own best posture. Do not mimic other’s posture.

Stand with your weight equally distributed on both feet.

Look down at your notes with your eyes, not by repeatedly bowing your head.

Make yourself busy by facing your audience directly, not sidewise.
