Anglo American Platinum must hear ourvoices

Right: Mr Peter Ott,who is currently incharge of theTwickenhamProject, witnessthe communitymarch.

On Tuesday morning this week the turn-off to Anglo American Platinum’s Twickenham Project on the R 37 betweenBurgersfort and Moroke was congested with vehicles parked next to the road. The reason was that the communities werestill trying to talk to Anglo American Platinum’s top management and several hundred people were gathered in front ofMopetsi Camp’s gates. Police from various places and units were present, as well as mine security who moved aroundin armoured security vehicles. Traffic officers were also on standby. The large group of people were cheerful andpresented mine management behind the wire fence with the content of a memorandum (on the bottom of the page) fromthe back of a bakkie via megaphone. After a lull in the proceedings the group marched / ran / hiked lifts and walked underPolice and Traffic Police escort to Hackney Shaft where the memorandum was read and motivated again before it washanded over to a representative of the company. The marchers want a response on the momorandum within sevendays. The peaceful gathering then dispersed.

Motorists should not be forced intomaking an ill-considered decision.Even though many operators mightarrive at an accident scene – it is stillhis decision on who should assist in therecovery of his vehicle. The NationalRoad Traffic Act 93 of 1996 stipulates

in Section 61(3) that ‘…no person shall remove avehicle involved in an accident, except for the purposeof sufficiently allowing the passage of traffic, withoutthe permission of the owner, driver or operator of suchvehicle or a person who may lawfully take possessionof such vehicle.’ To avoid excessive costs make sureyou get the operator that is recommended by yourinsurer - as they will usually cover that cost.Sydney

A 42 year-old man thought he had hit thejackpot when he received a message thatR45 000 had just been deposited into hisbank account. “I did not suspect any foul-play. Earlier thatday, I received a call from a person whom Iknow very well informing me that someonecontracted by a government department waslooking for an individual who could provide acatering service for an event”. Mr PeterKgoete said.Once the money had allegedly beendeposited into his bank account, Kgoetestarted being inundated with calls from aconvincing and soft-spoken man who calledhimself Shadrack. Shadrack told Peter thathe had accidently deposited R5 000 morethan they had agreed upon and requestedhim to reverse the transaction.“My sixth sense told me that something wasamiss. I bombarded him with lots ofquestions, which he seemed to beuncomfortable with. When he started gettinginpatient, I realised that he was up to nogood and I told him to get lost”. Peter said. When Shadrack was later contacted to findout what his motive was, the man deniedany knowledge of the incident and insisted

that he was Alfred not Shadrack beforerudely hanging-up.Burgersfort Police Spokesperson ConstableMpho Moloisi, said that while they had notreceived complaints regarding the incident, they could not rule out the possibility thatsuch scams do exist. He said they had in thepast few months experienced selling of jobsscams. “Criminals use different tricks to lureunsuspecting innocent people into theirtraps. Usually when they realise that theiroperating style has been discovered, theycome up with new tricks” the constable said.He also appealed to the community toalways be alert and to report any suspectedcriminal activity to the police.FNB spokesperson Christine Burrowssounded a warning to never divulge anybanking details such as an account number,App, online banking usernames, passwords, cellphone number, bank card number or anyother banking information to anyone.“Never store your cellphone, online bankingpassword or tablet’s pin code on yourcellphone.Select a new cellphone banking PIN andonline banking password regularly” saidBurrows.“No banking facility will ever send an SMS orcall a client requesting confidentialinformation, or SMS a client regarding aproblem with their account. Customers needto be aware of this. Unhappy drivers called Platinum Gazettethis week after they came to a closedoffice at the Greater Tubatse TrafficDepartment in Praktiseer. This officehandles the issuing of drivers licences, temporary licences, renewal of driverslicences as well as the testing of learnerdrivers applying for a licence.Upon the newspaper’s vist, the firstperson who assisted said: “They are onstrike, there is no water”. Furtherinvestigation revealed that the staff hadtrouble assisting the public while there isno proper sanitation or fresh wateravailable.According to reports the situation hasbeen going on for months. Outside thebuilding two portable toilets were placed. The newspaper directed enquiries to theGreater Tubatse MunicipalCommunications Unit, but by the time ofgoing to press, no answers had beenreceived.A quick call to the traffic office revealedthat they were offline (so they could stillnot assist the public), but a tank filledwith water had been delivered sinceTuesday. “We are now using buckets tofill the toilets with water,” one staffmember explained.

Trouble atthe trafficoffice

Working again...The road between Alverton village and Kgautswane isstill under construction. A stretch of 10km is due tobecome a tarred road. This construction project was launched with lots ofexcitement before the 2011 elections, but has beenridden with troubles. For months at a time no work would be done. Differentcontractors would be used and even allegations of gravesites halted the project for some time. The work is however now resuming and constructionworkers can be seen driving heavy and otherconstruction vehicles.

Mr Stephen Malekutu said: “I read theingredients on products I buy. I also checkthe expiry date of the product. No, I won’tbuy things with donkey or horse meat in it”.

Mr Collen Mojela said: “I don’t care muchabout what is in the wors etc. I just eat. I’mhungry. But if there is pork in there they mustwrite there is pork. They must not lie. Theymust be fair”.

Mr Duumba Mojela said: “That is unfaircustomer service if they don’t declare all theingredients. It is like they are robbingcustomers if they don’t give you what is saidon the packet. One needs to know what is inthe products. Some people are allergic tothings and we need to know what they put inthe food. Some of the meats mentioned inthe study are not even edible to us, they arejust animals”.

Me.

Mr Collins Mnisi said: “I don’t care so muchabout what they put in the food. These are allanimals made by God and they are meant tobe eaten. I do check labels because if I buybeef, I want it to be beef. If I buy donkey itmust be donkey”.

Right: Mr PietMosoma said: “Theymust declareeverything on thelabels of the food. Ialways read thelabels of the food Ibuy. I won’t buysomething withdonkey in it”.With him is Marvin.

Right: Mr Oscar Maile said: “I don’t read thelabels of the products. But I also don’t wantto eat strange types of meat. Especially notdonkey”.Left: Mr Lipton Kgohloane said: “I read what

is in there. I’ll still buy wors with things likehorse in it. I care about what I eat”.

“The studyfound that

anything fromsoya, donkey,goat and water

buffalo wasfound in up to68 percent ofthe minced

meats, burgerpatties, deli

meats,sausages anddried meats

that weretested”.

A study by the University of Stellenboschrevealed that South Africans can relate moreto the current European meat scandal thanthey may have thought. In Europe horsemeat was used in various meat productswithout being declared on the labelling. The South African study found that amongstother things soya, donkey, goat and waterbuffalo were found in 68% of minced meats, burger patties, sausages, dried or deli meatsthat were tested. These were not specifiedon the labelling of the products tested. The study tested 139 samples. Pork andchicken were also found in items that werenot supposed to contain them.“Unconventional species such as donkey, goat and water buffalo were also discoveredin a number of products,” Prof Louw Hoffmanof the Stellenbosch University Department ofAnimal Sciences said. “Our findings raisesignificant concern on the functioning of themeat supply chain in South Africa. Eventhough we have local regulations that protectconsumers from being sold falsely describedor inferior foodstuffs, we need thesemeasures to be appropriately enforced”.“Our study confirms that the mislabelling ofprocessed meats is commonplace in SouthAfrica and not only violates food labellingregulations, but also poses economic, religious, ethical and health impacts,” headded. We asked readers whether they care aboutwhat they eat. If they read the labels onproducts to check what ingredients are listedand if they will have a problem with some ofthe substitutions listed in the study.

Mr Robert Moropane said: “We don’t like the donkey and horse meat.Everything must be declared in the list of ingredients for our healthand safety. We also don’t like soya”. With him are Rosta, Surpriseand Victor.

Mr John Mkhondo said: “I don’t read thelabels. Ohwa! I don’t want them to give memeat like donkey or horse! If I pay for beef Iwant beef”.

Mr Bruce Mashaba said: “I read the ingredients of products. Theremust be a true reflection of the list of ingredients and what is reallyinside. If there is a sticker showing they are putting donkey in it, Iwon’t buy it”. With him are Shadi, Bruna and Sihle.

Mr Tshepo Maroga said: “I check the labelsbecause sometimes the meat inside is notgood. The meat of a donkey is not good. I willnot buy food with that in it”.

Mr Steve Mosoma said: “I care what I eat. If Ibuy chicken it must be chicken. It must bewhat is written on the packet. I read thelabels. It is not fair to pay a lot of money forthings that are not there e.g. soya instead ofbeef”. Links: Mnr.

By hom is Inge.

Mnr.

Ms Eunice Kgwete said: “No, I don’t read thelist of ingredients on products. I only read thebrand name and the price. I care what I eat, Iwon’t buy meats with donkey, horse or waterbuffalo in it. A donkey is not even edible!”

Mr Tebogo Maphanga said: “I do read thelabels, but not always. I will feel bad if I haveeaten donkey while I actually don’t eatdonkey. Then I could just as well have killedone of my own donkeys. I have lots of themand they are cheap - like R250 each!”

As ek sou agterkomdaar is perd of donkie in sou ek dit nie koopnie. Hulle moet mense wat bestanddele nie regaandui nie baie swaar beboet”.

Ms Dorah Meyer said: “I read the labelsbecause I care what is in the food. No, I won’tbuy meats with things like donkey in it. Shopsmust comply with legislation and properly labeleverything” With her are Neo and Dorah.
