as distinctions roll in
The new year started on a somewhat lownote for residents of Lannex North, south of
Steelpoort when an earth slide occurred on
the mountain adjacent to their houses.General Manager of Eastern Chrome Mines,Mr Emile Britz said the slide is not the resultof mining activities in the area, but describedthe occurrence as a natural disaster, with the
high rainfall in 2013 probably the main directcause of the slide.ECM mine management immediately wentinto action when the landslide started, evacuating and relocating the residents of
nine houses at the bottom of the mountain
temporarily to safe residences. Soon afterthe evacuation boulders the size of carsstarted rolling down the mountain.Water and electricity supply at the houseswere also interrupted and by Tuesday thisweek, access to the area was strictly
prohibited.Mr Britz expressed the opinion that the
houses are not in danger and that only threehouses, nearest to the mountain, willpossibly be damaged. But, we are not
taking any chances, the safety of people areparamount. Meetings with residents are
taking place on a daily basis to keep them
informed of the situation. They will only beallowed to move back to their houses whenthe area is completely safe. Distressedresidents are also provided with food bymine management.
One of the residents, Mr Karools Smit, toldPlatinum GazetteI grew up in that house asa boy. After school I left Steelpoort andwhen I returned and started working in thearea, me and my wife moved into the same
house. It is one of the three houses more in
danger than the other, but no seriousdamage was suffered to date. We lived 16years in that house and it is kind of sad to bechased from it by a mountain. We wereholidaying in Mozambique and when wereturned we received an urgent SOS to
return home because of the crisis.Platinum Gazette photographed the
mountain from a safe distance with a longzoom lens on Tuesday, but rolling boulderscould clearly be heard.

No water from 22:00 - 05:00 in Burgersfort
The closure of water at
night is an interim measure
and will soon be done away
as the corrective measures
are finalised.
3. Currently, LNW is managing the process by closingthe reservoir outlets at night from 22h00 till 05h00 withthe aim to allow water to accumulate. It was however realised that high lying areas get wateronly during morning hours and unfortunately not
throughout the day.4. To cater for the increasing water demands in the area,we are also in the process of finalising the process of
dril l ing 2 addit ional
boreholes to provideadditional water. This
process is planned to beconcluded in February 2014.Mr Mpamonyane added that
the problems are of atechnical nature and notbecause of a lack of effort
from LNW employees. The closure of water at nightis an interim measure and
will soon be done away as the corrective measures arefinalised. When Platinum Gazette asked why this night time closure
was not communicated to consumers in Burgersfort Mr.
Mpamonyane said: It is always our plans to communicateregularly with our customers and together with theSekhukhune District Municipality we aim to keep theminformed at all times.
We have respect for all our customers and should an erroroccur, it will not nullify the good work done by us jointly in
reaching our stakeholders at all times. The allegation that we refuse to communicate with paying
customers is unfounded and lacks truth. He added: Water is being provided without looking at thestatus of customers. It is just unfortunate that areas being affected by water at
this period is perceived to be from poorer communities. The status of customers have no bearing in the level oftheir water supply.
Residents in Ext. 5 and other high lying areas will have towait for a new pump to be installed before theyll have water24 hours a day again.Mr Simon Mpamonyane from Lepelle Northern Water (LNW)
Communications told Platinum Gazette this week that the
closure of water reservoirs during the night is a temporarymeasure. He gave the following background: The challenge facingthe Burgersfort Water
Purification Scheme, resultinginto high lying areas not getting
water regularly is due to lesspower pressure. There was an electricity power
failure in December 2013,during the week of the 14December 2013. This created
most of the challenges. It was also noticed during thatperiod that the submersible rawpump had some defects in supplying less raw water. Thepump was taken out for repair on the weekend of the 14December 2013, where a standby pump was put into
operation.
Since the installed standby pump delivers 191l/s ascompared to the main pump having capacity output of 231l/s this resultsinto less water being pumped into the Plant. The shortfall resulted into reservoirs being below 50%
which resulted into high lying areas not getting water. Most affected areas are those in high lying areas supplied
from the main reservoir of which the level is consistentlyaround 45%.
Actions taken to remedy the situation:1. The main pump has been sent for repair and is expectedto be returned soon to solve the raw water challenges dueto holidays in between
2. The process of purchasing a new pump with the samecapacity is at an advance stage and it shall be sourcedsoon

KB 300 LX(extended cab)Isuzu bakkie, a desirable thing for most people when they have loads to transport and to do
the work they have to on all sorts of terrain.
The Isuzu extended cab 4 x 2 bakkie with the 3 litre D-Teq diesel powerplant is one of the
offerings in the market not to be overlooked and certainly fits the desirable frame like a
hand fit in a glove.
Platinum Gazettetook the bakkie, compliments of Westvaal Steelpoort, for a spin on
route to photograph the landslide at Lannex near Steelpoort on Tuesday.
General impressions are good. The bakkies interior is very comfortable, although not
luxury car plush (and it isnt meant to be). Al the creature comforts are there, from climate
control, bluetooth telephony, front loader CD and RDS radio with mp3 and USB audio input,
cruise control, multifunction controls on the steering wheel and powered collapsible side
mirrors for when you need to squeeze into a tight spot (like between two taxis or the devil
and the deep blue sea).
This is not a family car (only two seats), but ideal for a couple or should you carry a lot of
stuff around that you do not want on the back of the bakkie (that is where the really, really
big and heavy stuff, 1142 kg, go). Open the Rolls Royce style suicide doors to the extended
area at the back of the front seats, there are lots of space for luggage, with an included
lockable bin for everything from valuable equipment to spices
One little gripe though. The female part of the couple who own a brand new extendedcab bakkie will miss the vanity mirror on the drivers side sunshade (a few men as well, you
know the modern man).
Driving the bakkie is a pleasure. The powerplant propels the vehicle with purpose and
with 130 kW @ 36000 r/min and torque of 380 Nm between 1800 and 2800 r/min on tap,
there is enough grunt for a full load or to fulfil the manufacturers promise that the optional
towbar will easily be up to a 3500 kg trailer with overrun brake (750 kg unbraked). So, there
you have it, more power that you will probably need to do whatever you want to do with the
bakkie.
The vehicle sits comfortable on the road and the engine noise is not intrusive or irritating.
We did not have the opportunity to load the bakkie, but suspect that it will even feel better
with a few kilogram at the back (this thing needs to work).
On the rough the bakkie also handled with aplomb. We did not need to try the rear diff
lock, but it is fitted and may be needed in this area from time to time.
Quality of fit and finish was good, but as soon as the newspapers reporter shifted the
vehicle into reverse the first time, the gear lever knob turned around, as if it was not fitted
properly.
When needing a bit of luxury and interior space on a workhorse bakkie, this one should
be on top of your short list. Definitely not cheap at close to R360 thousand, but worth it if it
suits your needs. Get it at Westvaal Steelpoort, tel 013 230 9230.

6 NEWS 10 JANUARY2014
Christmas and New Year has come and
gone and many South Africans are startingthe year with a heap of debt.
At the end of last year there were more than20.2 million credit-active consumers listed atcredit bureaus. The number of people withbad debt records increased by 71 000
people in the last quarter of 2013. Onlyabout 51.9 % of credit-active consumers arein good standing with about 48% struggling
with bad debt records.
Platinum Gazetteinterviewed readers beforeChristmas and at the beginning of the yearto find out what they think about thesestatistics and how they planned to survivethe festive period and start the New Year.
Mnr. Brian Muir en
Me. Wilrie Muir s:Kerstyd gaan oor
Jesus.
maak. Jou werk isnooit vir seker nie,so dink mooi voor jyskuld maak. Byhulle is Micari.
Mr Mpho Mokoena said: People dont work,
they just get grants from government andthen they can get credit on that. Theyllnever be able to repay! This is bringing oureconomy down. People spent too much over
Christmas and now they make loans forschool things. With him is his wife Refilweand their son Adamelang.
Ms Gugu Mkhonto said: You have to
budget before Christmas so you can cope inJanuary. I budget. People end up havinglots of loans because they dont budget.
Me. Louise Naud s: Mense gee te maklik
krediet.
Mr Thabo Kumalosaid: I had a budgetfor December and I
now have a back toschool budget. It istoo easy to make aloan. People now go
to loan sharksbecause theyve
spent all their money
in December.
Ms Mpho Ntimane said: Those statistics
cannot be! It is easy to get a loan and that iswhy many people have bad records. Youmust budget in time for the festive seasonso that you wont need to make debt.
Me. Joyce Komane s: Mense moet mooi
Mr Edward Kgoete said: It is too easy toget loans. People must not make loans for
Christmas, they have to budget. This was
not the first Christmas ever there isChristmas every year. I saved up Christmastime.
Ms Arabia Mohlala said: People should
have limited their spending over Christmas. Isaved for Christmas. People on grants and
pensions should not be allowed to makeloans. Only people with permanent jobs anda good income should be allowed to make aloan.
Mr MD Mampa said: It is not so easy to
make a loan these days. There are manypeople affected by bad credit records. Ittakes a lot of time to get your name removedfrom a bad credit record. People should stay
away from the loan sharks you only benefitthem and they dont really help you. Wemade it a happy Christmas within our limits.
Mr Danil Phasha said: Yes, it is true. It is
because living expenses went up so muchthat people have so much debt. Christmas isto me like any other day. People shouldsave if they want to do something special.
They must also remember that grants are forfood. People should not borrow money on agrant income.
Mr Davis Makua said: Most peoples livingwage is too low. They cannot afford to buyeverything and that is why they go to the
loan sharks. This must be a lesson to the
young generation. Go to school to try andget good jobs.
Debt as a problem in South Africa:

Mr Steve Mosoma said: It is t rue thatpeople have that much debt. Hopefully theydid not misuse their money at Christmas. Isaved because I know Christmas is coming. It is too easy to get a loan, but it becomesdifficult to pay it back. With him is Ashley.
Ms Pontsho Morena said: There are manyloan sharks doing business illegally. So it iseasy for people to get loans. It is not fair.People who get pension and grants shouldnot be able to get loans on those payouts. It
is unfair to the kids who should benefit fromthe grants. Loan sharks charge too muchinterest as well. People should watch how
they spend their money. They should buyonly what they really need. In 2013 I did notsave. It was the worst possible year for me. Iplan to start saving from now for this years
Christmas. Although I did not save, Ienjoyed myself anyway.
Mnr. Jannie van der Walt s: Hulle gee temaklik lenings. Mense moet elke jaar budget
vir persente vir Kersfees. Almal vergeetwaaroor Kersfees regtig gaan.
Mnr. Ron Taljaard s: Dis belaglik hoe maklik mense skuld kan
maak!
Mr. Elvis Nkuna said: You must live withinyour budget. If you earn R100. Live onR100. People must learn to controlthemselves.
Mnr.
Cash loansmaak mense dood.
Right: Mr CollinsZamba said: Peoplemust learn to saveand live within their
means. The majorityof people who aregetting paid do notget enough to coverall their expenses.
They must however
try. The governmentand police must actto prevent peoplefrom borrowing fromillegal cash loansand on grants. Illegal
cash loans must beclosed down. Iveused my bonus
during December.
Mnr.
Mnr. Enos Makwana s: Mense spandeerte veel geld in Desember.
Mr Sipho Nzimande said: Most South Africans fail to plan for year
end. We are sometimes forced to take more than we earn. We mustnot just make a braai because we see our neighbours do it. We getourselves into problems with debt. People giving loans and accounts
must check that the person applying is suitable and will be able topay it back. Dont just jump into a loan because you want to marry awife!

A Youth Empowerment Seminar was recently
held in Burgersfort. South Africas future is inthe hands of the youth. One of the young speakers of the day, Ms Shei laMmutle (2012-2013 Miss Limpopo) shared apersuasive statement that the word impossible
does not exist but only a state of mind whichchains or blocks a persons destiny.
We need to know that the word freedom and itsimplication have got no meaningful role in ourcountry until everyone is free from poverty, illiteracy; exploitation and defrauding by theelites. Young people should shun menacingactivities and involve themselves in activities that
are self uplifting which will keep them abreastwith knowledge to thrive in their lives. Let us all
play our respective roles to try to build apromising future for our next generation saidMr Pabalelo Mabilo, one of the days organisers.(Article and photographs: Pabalelo Mabilo,
