    7 Million FFS for ModikwaO

    n 21 September 2010 at14:00

Modikwa Platinu m Mine reached a

    remark able safety milestone in

    achieving 7 Million consecutive Fatality

Free Shifts. With th is remarka ble

    milestone in its

    relative short history, Modikwa

has joined an elite band of a few who have

    excelled in their safety achievements.

The beginning of this success story was

back in 2006 when on 26th November

2006 Modikwa recorded th e first million

fatality free shifts in its history. The

second million followed in Ju ly 2007, the

third in Febru ary 2008, the fourth in

August 2008, the fif th in March 2009 an d

the sixth in December 2009. This

remarka ble achievement has resulted in

the mine being awarded the Mine Health

and Safety Council and th e Department of

Minerals and E nergy Awards six times

plus three trophies from the Association of

    Mine Managers for significant safety

achievements. I t took th e mine just over

nine months to achieve its seventh m illion

    consecutive fatality free shifts.

Modikwa is tru ly setting a benchmark

for the platinum mining industry. SHEQ

Leader , Alan Peers, says only employees

    and contractors unconditional

commitment to total compliance to safety

strat egies and the dedication shown by

them t owards the elimination of unsafe

acts and conditions coupled with a

    relationship with Labour organisations

based on trust ha s made this possible.

He says a zero mindset towards

injuries, pr evention of re-occurren ce of

injuries, and set safety standar ds and

rules are the foundat ion tha t is taking

Modikwa to the forefront in injury

prevention, stating: our goal to prevent

not only fata lities in th e mine but also

injuries as a whole is within sight a nd the

commitment going forward will make us a

    success.

    This exceptional achievement was

celebrated with a road sh ow by the

mana gement of Modikwa Platinu m Mine

visiting th e different Business Areas,

personally congratu lating and tha nking

every employee for th eir contribut ion (on

the front page Concentrator Plant Leader,

Tumi Molapo, leads emp loyees in giving

themselves a pat on the back as soon as

    the achievement was r ecorded).

Speaking to the media and just before

thesta rtof the roadshow on Thursday,

Busines s Leader, Sean OConnor said

    employees attitude towards safety is

    probably the biggest contributing factor

towards successful safety mana gement at

the mine, saying a culture of believing

that zero harm is att ainable regarding

injuries and fatalities has sta rted to grow

on the mine. Without this att itude we

would not, have been able to do it. Later

he told employees at the concentra tor

plant tha tpart of the reward for the

achievement is tha t they arr ive at their

families safely after every shift to be there

    for t hem.

    NUMSA and UASSA representatives

at th e mine also shared their joy and

congratu lations with the workers and

mana gement, saying that they were proud

of the achievement after th e combined

    effort of management and organised

labour in reaching their objective, with

NUMSA saying God was with us.

An official ha nd over of the Min e

Health a nd Safety Council and The

Department of Minerals an d Energy

    Awards will take place shortly.

We believed we could do it

Waiting for the PresidentTwo villages between Echo Caves and Strydom Tunnel, Mapareng

and Mak galane (which are situa ted adjacent to each other), are

now so desperate to have their needs attended to, that t hey

resorted t o visit Pr esident J acob Zuma s office at th e Union

    Buildings last week.

A spokesperson for the group, comprising six persons from

each village (12, to fill a ta xi to Pretoria) sa id they left last week

Monday just a fter 02:00 to arrive at t he Pr esidents office early.

With them t hey had all documentat ion pertaining to their

request s for service delivery, as well as a motivation t o leave

Limpopo Province for Mpum alan ga.

We know Thaba Chweu has it s own problems, but despite

their problems, there is at least a n att empt

to deliver services said Mr Timoth y Mqiba

on behalf of the Ma paren g group. At first

the t wo delegations from the villages had

problems getting access to the U nion

Buildings and they had to explain at length

why they were there. Mr Mqiba said theytold the people at the Union Buildings that

the reason why they decided to visit the

Presiden ts office is because t hey got no

feedback to any requests and that more

than 700 calls to the presidential hotline

    also did not help.

When th ey were eventually allowed

into the building, personnel at the

Presidents office were friendly according to

Mr Mqiba and they were questioned at

length on the reasons for their visit. They

    handed over all relevant documentation

and were promised a speedy response

before th ey left for Maparen g and

    Makgalane.

On Satur day the Mapareng group gave

feedback to the community (photograph) at

    the traditional authority. The response

from th e community was that should noresponse be forthcoming from th e

Presiden ts office, a delegation sh ould trek

their a gain to go and find out wha t is going

    on.

    Yesterday Mr Mqiba told Platinum

Gazette that they phoned to Pretoria. The

response they got was that the President is

a little bit busy at the moment with ANC

matters in Durban an d that an official

response t o their visit will only be

    forthcoming at a later date.

    10 NEWS 24 SEPTEMBER 2010

Today is National Heritage Day but it is

    also national Braai4Heritage day.

This initiative of Jan Braai (real name

Ja n Scann ell) is supported by Archbishop

    Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Not one South African per son can t ell you

that they have never witnessed a braa i.

Even in rura l areas th ey light a fire and

put th eir meat on it to cook. As a meat

lover, I urge tha t on Her itage Day people

Braai4Heritage and share their meat with

those wh o do not have Archbishop

Desmond Tutu t old The Times in 2008.

    The Braai4Heritage initiative sees the

braai as the one common heritage all

    South Africans sha re.

It is called many things: Chisa Nyam a,

Braai an d Ukosa to name a few. Although

the ingredients m ay differ, the one th ing

that never changes is that when we have

something to celebrate we light fires, and

prepare great feasts, said Ja n Braa i. We

    respect and support National Heritage

Day and recognize its importance to all

South Africans. It is with t his in mind

that we would like to play our part and

unlock its value, he sa id about th e

    initiative.

Ja n Braai recently broke the Guinness

World Record for the longest (in time)

braai ever h eld. This took place in Cape

    Town on 17 September.

Ja n Braai att empted to get a typical braai

going for the record attempt. Amongst

some of the food he bra aied was

Kameelhout boerewors, stea ks, ribs an d

    vegetarian patties.

The record setting rules required him t o

braai on wood, have at least five items on

the grid at any given time and all the food

    had to be eaten.

The food was sold at a nominal price and

the funds donated to charity. Klipdrift

and Castle joined in providing the

traditional thirst quenchers at a braai.

After breaking th e record last week, J an

Braai (after th anking everyone for t heir

support etc) urged South Africans to light

the fires and braa i. So this week we asked

readers how they would spend Heritage

Day and will they braa i? We also asked

what t hey like to braa i most.

    (Information: www.braai4heritage.co.za)

Will you light the fire and

Ms Mmashaba Ramaila said: Braaiwors. That is my favourite. We will maybe notbraai on Friday, but maybe over theweekend.

Mr Terrence Davhana said: Of course wewill braai and have some booze. Worsand steak is my favourite.

Me. SindiTolken s: Ons gaan weg virdie naweek, maar ons gaan braai. Onsgaan skaaprib braai. By haar is Tersia.

Mr Christo Pienaar s: Of coursegaan ekbraai. Skaapribbetjie. Ek dink dis maar diegeselligheid van n braai en ons mooi weerwat maak dat ons Suid Afrikaners sodaarvan hou.

Mr Africa Selemane said: Yebo, I willbraai. I like to braai lamb and mutton.

Me. Jackie Mkase said: Well have a braaiat home with friends. I like wors the best.

Me. Colette Hanekom, me. Bronwyn Fouch en me. Yvonne Fouch s: Onsgaan braai. Vrydag is n lekker kuierdag. Ons hou van varktjoppies, rumpsteaken sosaties. Me. Hanekom hou baie van gebraaide hoender.

Mr Thomas Matlakala said: I am going to celebrateour area and plant a tree. Part of the celebrationwith friends is to braai. Anything and everythingwill be braaied. Braai is part of the culture andlifestyle we have. With him is Joy Moraba.

Jan Braais top tips for asuccessful braai

Nothing beats a real wood fire.

Gas is Afrikaans for a guest at your braai, not something you braai with.Braaing is the only fat-negative way of

cooking food. Even when you steam it,the fat in the food stays behind. Whenyou braai, the fat drips out.Never braai with indigenous wood. Alienvegetation like Rooikrantz and

Blackwattle drink lots of ground water.Braaing is a direct form of energy use,

from the coals, to your meat. Withconventional electricity there is a lot ofspillage between the power plant, powerlines, electricity box, wires, stove andpan. If you love the earth, braai.Have enough ice at your braai. To put in

Klipdrift & Coke, to keep Castles cold, and to treat burn wounds with.

Smoke flies to pretty people, so sendthem to the kitchen to go and makesalad.Animals eat grass, leaves and vegetables

all their lives and convert it to meat.Eating meat is like eating vitamin pills.Do not braai your steak until the flavour isdead.A braaibroodjie is your chance in life to

have your bread buttered on both sides.(Published by Jan Braai on
