Sleeping warm after fire

Residents of a house in Mokutung village near Echo Caves were left without blankets orbeds and very little clothes after a fire destroyed their house last week. the DisasterManagement section of the Greater Tubatse Local Municipality assisted them withmatresses, but blankets were a problem. Mr Abedneco Makina, owner of Phelo PelePharmacies in Burgersfort and Lydenburg, came to their rescue and donated a numberof blankets to the Mmola family. In the photograph Mr Makina (second from left in theback row) shakes the hand of the local headman, Mr Emmanuel Mmopane. A two-year-old baby who suffered burns in the fire, was taken to Matibidi Hospital for treatment. The baby has been discharged after been personally taken care of by the doctor at thehospital during the strike. The baby’s condition is still improving.

‘We are definitelynot striking’

The question of service delivery in the area remains a contentious issue. On Monday agroup of residents, travelling all the way from Ga-Mampuru, chose to stage a small marchin Burgersfort to bring to the attention to authorities that they are not at all happy with thelevel of service delivery in their area. Meanwhile the National Council of Provinces, whoearlier this year during a roadshow in Praktiseer promised to oversee service delivery projectsin the area, was scheduled to visit the area again this week to follow up on their previousvisit. Presumably because of the strike, the visit was postponed.

10 NEWS 27 AUGUST 2010

Do the strikers’ unionsThe more than a week long strike by civilservants could bring the country to a standstill if Cosatu effects a secondary strike bynext week.By the time of going to press, the unionsrepresenting the police, correctionalservices and traffic police was due to startstriking over the weekend.Cosatu’s non-public service unions will bejoining the strike in soladity with the civilservants. They were planning to startstriking by Thursday next week, should thenegotiations not reach a closure beforethen. Cosatu represents almost two millionworkers in various industries, includingmining, factory workers andcommunications workers. This week services at hospitals, schoolsand other public service areas were almostcompletely shut down. The strikingworkers include nurses, teachers andclerks. The workers are demanding a 8.6% wageincrease and a R1000 a month housingallowance. The state have so far said thatit cannot afford to give in to these demandsas there are simply not enough fundsavailable to cover the additionalexpenditure. At many hospitals volunteers this weekhelped by cleaning, cooking and providingbasic care to sick patients and babies. Insome areas the striking workersintimidated volunteers and non-strikingworkers to try and prevent them fromentering hospitals and clinics.Cosatu’s general secretary, ZwelinzimaVavi accussed the volunteers of “scabbing”.He was quoted as saying: “Volunteering fora stipend is scabbing. Scabbing is aninternational word meant to explainexactly that - when you come and take thejobs of workers who are in a legal strike.Yes, you can work with us in order toensure that no lives are lost, but pleasedon’t cross the picket line”.Many schools were closed and in at leastthree provinces the matric preliminaryexaminations were postponed. At this stage there are no official figures ofhow much the strike will cost the country. The damage can be seen in the toll it takeson the sick and the poor who cannot affordto pay for private services. Many socialcommentators warned that once the effectof ‘no work, no pay’ sets in, the countrymay also be in for a big economic slumpand affects may still be felt once matricresults are critized and the strike longforgotten. We asked readers if they feel the unionsrepresenting the strikers have too muchpower and how that weighs in with thenational interest of e.g. providing goodhealth care and education?

Mr Patson Masakona and Ms Nthabiseng Maja said: “They have too much power. Theyall belong to the same party. It is unfair to intimidate volunteers. They are not qualifiedand are only helping with basic care such as giving food, cleaning and so on.Government must give attention to this”.

Mnr.

Mr Samson Sondlane said: “They do nothave enough power. Volunteers must beallowed to work”.

Mr White Marape and Ms Sinah Marape said: “They don’t have too much powerbecause the children of teachers and ministers are attending private schools so it hasno effect on them. They must allow people to help”.

have too much power?

Mnr.

Mr Tau Pheti said: “It is not right tointimidate volunteers. The unions do nothave enough power otherwise the strikewould have been over”.

Mnr.

Twins Tumai and Kuziva Nyamurowa said: “They can do anything, but they must notstop people from getting help at hospitals. They must think twice about the hospitals. We all know the increment is necessary, but not like this. What if they get hit with abottle during a protest? Where are they going to get help? They are trying to savethemselves by killing themselves in this way”.

Ms Tebogo Ngele said: “The unions donot have enough power. It is right toprevent volunteers from helping. Nobodyshould help at hospitals”.

Mnr Kallie Britz sê: “Die unies regeer dieland. Dis onprofessioneel om by ‘nhospitaal te staak”.

Mnr Gideon Kotze sê: “Daar word niegedink nie. Hulle wil verhogings hê, maarhulle druk die ekonomie op sy knieë. Disnie reg om mense wat wil help veral byhospitale, te keer nie”.

Mr Mduduzi Macebo said: “The unionshave rights to represent the workers. Athospitals it becomes a problem because itaffects the babies and the sick. Thegovernment should not allow it to go onthat long. The unions have much power, but we must also think about the civilservants.

Ms Maggy Mosoma said: “I feel sorry forthe strikers. Government does notunderstand the importance of the nurses, police and teachers. The unions have toomuch power. When they want, they canhave everything. They must not intimidatepeople and make things worse”.

Me. Kinders by skole kry ookswaar”.

Smokey-hotsoccer & safety

campaignSmokey Hills Platinum Mine isrunning a safety campaign inconjunction with a soccer tournament. The various departments at the mineare competing against each other.Mr Derrick Comley, SHE manager atthe mine said that he wanted to takethe similarities between soccer andsafety and in that way illustrate howthe employees can think about safetyat the workplace.“Soccer is played globally, we’ve justhad the World Cup. Similarly, safety isa world wide concern,” he said.He used the following to illustrate hispoint: “Soccer is played between twoopposing teams. Safety is playedbetween a team of workers andopponents which are hazards. Soccer isplayed to defeat the opponents. Safetyis played to gain an upper hand overworkplace hazards. To defeat youropponents in soccer you need to knowtheir strengths and weaknesses. Insafety we need to understand thehazards and risks and how they canhurt us. Soccer has supporters who

want to see their team winning. Insafety our families are our supporters. They want to see us winning againstthe workplace hazards and want tosee us returning home every day aftershift.Different strategies are employed insoccer which revolves mainly arounddefending and attacking theopponents. Safety employs similartactics of defending and attacking thehazards. In soccer a lapse ofconcentration can cost you the game.In safety a lapse of concentration cancost you a limb or even your life”.The campaing is ongoing and thetournament will still continue overthe coming weeks. The teams that have already playedare: Security vs Muckbays. Score: 5-3;Adits vs Minopex Engineering. Score:3-2; Raises vs Minopex Process. Score:1-0; Admirals vs Engine Down. Score:4-3.The semi-finals are planned for 12September.
