South 2 emerges with a bang! On Tuesday, 20 July Modikwa initiat ed the first blast at the South 2Shaft portal excavation. While the open cast is intended merely as a survival filler aimed atputting ounces through the mill in order to reduce unit costs andimprove profitability, South 2 Shaft is intended to replace South 1Shaft which will begin with planned downscaling as from 2012,explained Mr Gary Strong, Projects Business Area Leader. Theinitiation of the South 2 Shaft Project, is however a bold step in suchtesting and uncertain economic times and its continuation will dependlargely on the extent of improved productivity levels at the currentoperations.South 2 is approximately 4km on road from South 1. Work on the newShaft is progressing fast. Workers will start with the first part of theinfrastructure to go underground within a week or two.

Modikwas safetyrecognised as the bestYou are not only the best platinum mine in South Africawhen it comes to safety, but your are the best mine in SouthAfrica with your 7 000 000 fatality free shifts, was the words

of Ms Rene Joubert of the Mine Health and Safety Council. She presented Mr Sean OConnor, Modikwas BusinessLeader with a trophy and a certificate for the minesachievement of 7 000 000 fatality free shifts in September thisyear. The function took place on Tuesday and dignitaries includedAnglo Platinum CEO, Mr Neville Nicolau and Mr AndrWilkens, CEO of African Rainbow Minerals. Other guestsincluded representatives of NUM, UASA, ARM, AngloPlatinum, DMR, Section 21 Companies, Kgoshis and familymembers of those employees who sadly passed away in mineaccidents. Before celebrating, the mine gave recognition to thoseemployees who had died in the line of duty, assuring theirfamilies that their deaths were not in vein and that thecorrective safety measures were very important to theachievement of no further loss of life. The two CEOs, MrNicolau and Mr Wilkens (photograph top left) laid a wreath atthe commemoration plaque and a minute of silence was

observed. The function continued with Mr Nicolau, Mr Wilkens, Mr

Elliot Letsoko (Limpopo Region DMR Senior InspectorMining), Ms Joubert, Mr Dick van der Westhuizen(representing the union UASA) and Mr William Mabapa

(representing NUM) and Mr OConnor each getting a turn toaddress the audience.Apart from congratulations, the speakers all encouraged theemployees to continue working safely according to the AngloAmerican Platinum Safety Strategy which is based on threesimple focus points: Zero Mindset; No Repeats and SimpleStandards. Ms Joubert warned that complacency is one of thebiggest threats to safety on the mines.Mr OConnor said that auto pilot mode was something toavoid: If we believe we have achieved superior safetyperformance, it is not from doing more of the same each day,but to see each day with its new challenges and changes as anew challenge to get through the day without an injury toanyone. This cannot be achieved in a relaxed automatic modebut in an extremely alert and continuous awareness of thepotential dangers in the process. This becomes more difficult as we lengthen the periodsbetween fatalities, we are challenged with complacency, welose our focus, and we slip into our subconscious mode too

easily! This is now our biggest challenge. Neville Nicolau saidit when he joined AngloAmerican Platinum in 2008: Safety is

our moral license to mine. We cannot allowpeople to be injured or killed while working onour mines. We believe that we are delivering onthis strong belief and desire to make our minessafe! The mine is now aiming at celebratingfive years of fatality free shifts in March 2011and if they continue their safe standards willcelebrate 8 000 000 fatality free shifts in 36weeks (June 2011).

Modikwa Platinum Mine did a 25000t open castsample blast at the beginning of July this year.Blasting this specific area was done to

determine the feasibility of future open castmining at the mine. The results of this will onlybe known after the sample has been processed. To open the one hectare sized pit, 400 holes

were drilled and blasted with 60 tons of explosives. The pit will end up having an 18mhigh wall. Approximately 30 people arepresently working on the project.Situated on the Eastern Limb of the BushveldIgneous Complex, Modikwa Platinum Mineexploits the chromitite seam known as the UpperGroup 2 (UG2) reef. The north/ northwesterly-tending ore body isapproximately 28 km on strike, outcropping on

Modikwa Platinum Mine road constructionprogressing well in MandagshoekThe construction of the Maandagshoek roadfrom the Driekop T-junction to the HC Boshoff Hospital is one of the Mine Community SocialInvestment project. The project commenced inFebruary this year and is due for completion byearly 2011. The construction company hasexperienced many challenges with the project todate, one of these is the theft of leveling poles, and this undermines progress of the progress. Both the contractor and the Community LiaisonOfficer approached the Kgoshis in the area torequest help regarding this problem. Anotherproblem is that there is no proper indication on

where waterpipes are running. During thecourse of construction some pipes weredamaged, however these have been repaired. This also resulted in the GTM Water Departmentrelocating some stretches of pipe to where itwill be out of the way of future constructionwork. Telkom and Eskom poles were alsoremoved and relocated in certain areas. As thesafety of not only the construction workers onsite, but also the community at large is veryimportant, speed humps were erected at schoolsand areas where there is a high pedestrianvolume. The engineers working on the project

has requested thecommunity to adhere to theentire road signs as well asto keep off the half-constructed road. Driversshould keep off theunfinished new road whenthe base course is beingconstructed.
