The Oaks Club is an exceptional 36-hole private country club community. The USTA Women’s Pro Circuit Event in April, 2009 was widely acclaimed to be a huge success, not only for the winner of the event, Sharon Fichman, but for The Oaks Club and the Sarasota tennis community as well. Mic Huber of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune said it very well in his column titled “The Oaks Sets High Standard.” In it he writes, “The Oaks $25,000 tournament exceeded expectations for a first-year event in virtually every area.”

2010 Event April 11th – 18th: As previously announced, The Oaks Club will again host the USTA Women’s $25,000 Pro Circuit Event in 2010. The field will feature 32 women players ranked 95 to 200 on the Women’s Tennis Association tour. Players from many countries will compete in singles and doubles matches.

A GRAND OPENING OF HISTORIC PROPORTION – THE CONCESSION GOLF CLUB CLUBHOUSE by Mark Bruce, PGA ProfessionalPlay Golf Sarasota – Editor in Chief

The Concession Golf Club celebrated the grand opening of its new Clubhouse January 23rd. Opening remarks from new Concession Golf Club owner, Bruce Cassidy, welcomed the crowd of members, guests, and players who had gathered for a wonderful day of celebration. The opening commenced with breakfast and was followed by many exciting events, including a Jonathan Yarwood clinic, a lively golf tournament, a cocktail reception on the veranda, and a fabulous dinner prepared by Bistro at The Concession restaurateur, Sean Murphy and his team. Over 80 golfers and 140 dinner guests attended the event in honor of the opening of the new Clubhouse.

The golf clinic, co-hosted by Tony Jacklin, featured 2009 U.S. Amateur Champion and Concession member Benjamin An, along with Sean Jacklin, Tony’s talented son, demonstrating a variety of golf clubs and balls dating

back to the 1940s. Tony used the forum to convey a message about the history of golf, the changing face of equipment and technology, and the foresight that went into planning The Concession Golf Club.

“We’re doing this for the love of the game,” noted Tony Jacklin. “We’re doing more than just reaching forward to create a state-of-the-art Club; we’re also looking to preserve history. The Concession is built upon past achievement in golf and upon the personalities who did so much to elevate the game. A sense of history and tradition – that’s what sets The Concession a world apart from the usual.”

The vast Clubhouse exhibits the best in Mediterranean architecture and features a stunning interior design by world renowned artists Adrienne Vittadini and Pamela Hughes. From the moment one enters the brick motor court and catches sight of the palatial white columns that line the front entrance, it is clear that this is a special place. Club amenities include a well suited golf shop, exquisite mens’ and ladies’ locker rooms, a golfer’s dream men’s lounge, beautiful card rooms, a pub-style bar, and casual, formal, and private dining options at the newly opened Bistro at The Concession. By combining the efforts of a world-class golf course and a world-class

Meet me down by “The River”Nothing beats the tranquility found when you are on or near the water. The same holds true for spending time on the Manatee River. Just over the river and east of I-75 lies the wonderful golf community of River Wilderness Golf & Country Club. Celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year reminds me of how fast time flies. My first exposure to River Wilderness was seeing their name on Paul Azinger’s visor back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Paul was at the prime of his career and was often seen on weekend Golf telecasts racking up victories and top ten finishes.

PITCHING: If you want to make some scores, then get your

pitching sharper! Getting accurate from 80 yards and in is a great way to lower your scores quickly and easily.

The set up for pitching is a blend of the chip set up and the full swing. Stand wider than you would for a chip, but not as wide as you would for a full swing. Stand the same ratio from the ball too -- not as close as a chip, but not as far away as your full swing. Your feet should be slightly open to the target with the ball towards the middle of your stance and your weight leaning left a hint. This encourages a downward hit when you squeeze the front edge of the club against the turf during the hit.

A pitch is powered by a rotation of the body, with the arms hanging on for the ride and staying in sync. Many people who are poor at pitching get very ‘hand and armsy.’

Try hitting with a towel under your arms to get the feeling. The wrists gently bend in and allow the club to hinge on the way back and on the way through, providing some power but also the all important angle of attack to get the ball airborne.

Once you have the technique, I like the idea of a clock system with the left arm. Turning the body gently and having an awareness of where the left arm is in relation to the ground results in the ball going a certain distance. So, the left arm at 8 o’clock hits the ball “X” distance, 9 o’clock hits it “Y” distance, and so on.

Plans are complete and work has begun on the addition of a new teaching facility at Plantation Golf and Country Club. Early this summer the golf professional staff will offer instruction from a new indoor teaching and fitting station being built at the north end of their existing practice range. This

building will have a huge exterior door where students can hit shots from within the protection of the building out onto the heart of the driving range. Technology inside the building will include numerous teaching aids, dual video camera set ups with V1 graphics and the latest FlightScope launch monitor and tracking device. Matrixes for all the major golf equipment vendors will also take residence in this new facility for state of the art custom club fitting and analysis. Adjoining the interior hitting station will be an outdoor station with similar capabilities.

From May through October, Plantation’s new golf academy will be accessible by non-members. Individual or group lessons will be scheduled through the golf shop. Custom club fitting and analysis, along with entry into all of the scheduled multi-day golf schools will also be available to the public via online website registrations or directly with the professional staff in the pro shop. As the program grows in its first season, teaching professionals of international notoriety will partner with Plantation’s staff to deliver some of the best teaching and technology to this area for members in-season and the community at-large in the summer months.
