    Play Day 8 - 29/7/2012

    Date: Moonday, 29th of Gozran.

    The party begin this session, still in the natural cavern area, having searched through the

    loot left behind by the strange ant like creatures from the last session.

    It is only about 9 oclock in the morning, as the party had risen very early in this morning.

    With this section of the under-deep apparently cleared of all inhabitants and gear, the partyproceed back to the stone staircase that lead to this level. They backtrack through theupper level, making their way westward until they arrive at another wide stone staircase;Splugs dead body still hangs upon the cold stone wall having being the victim of the trapthat was half way down the stairs.

    Descending into the cold and dark, the brave heroes of Winterhaven proceed back to theseries of strange arcane symbols that glow from the stone ground. The symbols are about10 feet in size and the party struggle with a way forward.

    Krondor approaches one of the symbols, Dam magic! Why cant they have a pit trap or afoul beast. He bends down slowly and reaches forward with one of the silver platinumdragon statues that the party found previously at the altar of Bahamut.

    Favion looks dubious and says, I wouldnt do that Dwarf, as he prudently takes a fewsteps back from Krondor and the rest of the group who are standing around watching thedwarf.

    Isabella says quickly, Yes I think you should rethink...

    But before she can finish her sentence, Krondor places the statue onto the symbol and aghostly scream erupts from the glowing symbol. A wave of arcane energy blasts out, hittingeveryone in the party except Favion who had backed off. Isabella and Krondorimmediately scream out in terror and then run at full speed back towards the stone stairsthat they had come from.

    As they flee the rest of the party can hear moaning and shuffling coming from close by,approaching the party.

    The Monk of Irori, can see moving shapesapproaching in the dim shadows, just out of range ofDelinas lamp.

    Hold your ground! Something comes! shouts theMonk.

    Emerging into the light, are numerous zombies. Theylook small and weak, being more bone than flesh.

    Bravely the Monk holds his ground, attacking eachundead creature that appears. His blessed holy wraps

    flashing alight with each hit.

    Favion, Elamros and Delina stand back and hurl arrow and stone at the creatures.

    Meanwhile, Krondor and Isabella have reached the stone staircase that leads up. Krondorsuddenly regains his senses and stops dead. He looks at the still fleeing Isabella.

    The dwarf shouts out, Cleric! CLERIC! Dam it - would you STOP woman!

    Isabella, gripped by the arcane mind altering spell, can not stop and continues to run.

    The dwarf can hear the sounds of battle behind him and decides to turn back to help theparty. He runs as fast as he can back towards the embattled party.

    He races up to the battle and moves next to the Monk who is moving constantly to strikeout at wave after wave of undead. Larger zombies now appear and the Monk and Krondor,standing side by side, keep them at bay.

    Isabella has now run passed the first room in the upper level. It is dark and her humaneyes can make out nothing in the darkness. She runs straight into a stone wall. The knockbrings her back to her senses.

    What the... she exclaims, Why am I here? I have to get back before it is too late.

    Slowly, unable to see in the darkness, she makes her way back towards the staircase. Thesounds of distant battle, her only guide as to the right direction. She feels along the coldstone wall, one hand stretched out, and eventually finds the stone steps.

    The sound of battle is louder now. She can hear Krondorsbattle cry. She makes her waydown the steps and turns down the corridor. She can see the opening of the corridor now,

    light coming from Delinas lamp illuminating off the damp cold walls. The Cleric picks upher speed now and turns down the corridor.

    Running, she can see the party ahead, and shouts out, Stand back - I shall banish thesefoes!

    Krondor turns and holds up his hand, Hold Cleric. None of the foul creatures still stand.

    The party are once again victorious.

    The arcane symbol now glows only half as bright as before. The Monk takes a step ontothe symbol, whilst the rest of the party stand back, and nothing happens. Continuingahead the party come to another symbol further down the corridor. This one still glowsbrightly. The symbol is near a bend in the corridor.

    The Monk of Irori moves towards the symbol as the rest of the party stand back. He runsforward and jumps high into the air, easily making it over the symbol.

    Elamros looks at the symbol and speaks, If we jump across the edge, using the corner ofthe corridor as a guide it is only a small jump - five feet rather than ten.

    Krondor looks unimpressed, Five feet or ten - it is still a long way for a Dwarf carrying allTHIS to jump!

    Isabella speaks up, Yes, long too for someone wearing armour like mine.

    Elamros walks up to the symbol, Look Ill show you how easy it is.

    The Half-Elf Rogue moves quickly forward and jumps towards the corner of the symbol buthits the stone corner square on. He falls flat onto his back directly onto the glowingsymbol. Once again the ghostly scream erupts and arcane energy erupts from the groundbut the only person in range this time is the prone Elamros.

    The Half-Elf quickly gets up screaming, with fear in his eyes, and starts to run towards thestaircase.

    The Monk of Irori quickly runs up to hims and grabs him. The Half-Elf struggles to get freebut the Monk holds him until eventually the Half-Elf comes to his senses.

    This symbol too is now only glowing with half of the brightness of before.

    Krondor speaks up, Yes thankyou Elamros for showing us how easy it was. At least thedam device wont go off now. The Dwarf laughs loudly.

    Moving ahead the party come to a large room. A wide stone stair case leads further downinto the depths. Before descending into this new area the party search around the room.

    Just outside Elamros sees a portion of the stone wall that looks slightly different in colourthan the rest. He searches there and discovers a small rock that is loose. Pushing it, a softgrinding sound can be heard and then the section of stone wall moves and reveals a smallempty chamber.

    The party enter and search it but it appears to be empty. Krondor looks aroundsuspiciously, These walls arent right. No one constructs and lays stone blocks like that.

    As the Dwarf is looking closer he sees the eastern wall shimmer slightly. At the same timesome of the party hear low moans coming from the east. Krondor swings his battleaxe at

    the eastern wall and it passes straight through it as if its not there.

    The Dwarf steps through the wall, his vision is effected near the wall, but he presses onand comes out on the other side to a small odd shaped room, that appears to be anarmory. It contains two weapon racks on the north and south walls, and a stand againstthe east wall with a ragged suit of armor mounted on it. Mounted on the north wall abovethe weapon rack is a steel plaque inscribed with a helm from a suit of armor.

    But that is not what catches the attention of Krondor. Standing in the room are half adozen large zombies, one of which is standing directly in front of the surprised Dwarf.Krondor has to duck quickly to avoid the swipe from a cold claw like hand.

    The Dwarf shouts, To me! Enemies!

    Because of layout of the room it is difficult to get most of the party inside to fight. Krondor,the Monk and Elamros - who does an impressive roll into the room to avoid being hit - arethe only ones who can fit it.

    Isabella, steps toward the illusionary wall and raises one hand up, holding her symbol ofCayden Cailean, and her other hand touches the holy battle symbol. She closes her hands

    and speaks forth, I banish you - in the name of Cayden Cailean!

    A golden glow spreads forth and fills the entire area, including past the illusionary wall. Allthe undead creatures drop to the ground, crumbling to dust.

    The battle is over.

    *******The party enter the room easily now that the zombie threat has been banished. Walking upto one of the weapons racks, a booming voice sounds out, stopping the party in theirtracks:

    A wondrous treasure,

    Valued by all, sought by many.

    Found in both victory and defeat,

    Yet never at the bottom of a treasure chest.

    It marches before you like a herald,

    And lives long after you are gone.

    Of what do I speak?

    The party look at each other confused. They start whispering to each other discussingwhat to say. Minutes drag on and the voice booms again:

    Of what do I speak? Answer now!

    Krondor looks up nervously, Reputation.

    Suddenly the ragged suit of armor on the eastern stand gleams with light and before theeyes of the surprised party, transforms from rusted junk into a gleaming black iron scalearmour.

    The rest of the weapon racks are searched but everything else is rusted and old.

    Isabella casts a Detect Magic spell and the black iron scale armour glows brightly. She andFavion attempt to determine its arcane properties but can only discern that it is indeed

    enchanted and has something to do with fire.

    With this additional armour the party now find itself overburdened with gear. The partydecide to leave this new armour and Krondors spare Dwarven war axe behind here at thehidden armoury and pick it up on the way out. They hide the gear amongst the rustedweapons.

    *******Feeling confident that they have cleared the area, the party descend down the stone stairsinto the lower, unexplored level. The walls are smooth stone and the floor below consistsof flagstones with mortar between them. But it is the ceiling of the below level that catchesthe attention of the party. The stone ceiling has a faint silver glow to it which bathes theentire lower level in a light like a bright moon light night. It is possible to see for somedistance with it.

    The long stairs open into large chamberthat extends some distance. A 10 widepit is visible just forward of the bottom ofthe stairs and two human-sized creaturesstand near the entrance. Big, pointedears stick out from under their helmets,

    and sharp teeth glitter in their mouths.

    Hobgoblins.

    One of the guards yells out a challengephrase: Shadow seeks shadow!

    The party quickly look at each other andshrug.

    Elamros whispers, Is that a question oris he just making a general observation?

    Krondor whispers back, Hush!

    The dwarf looks down at the twoHobgoblins and says in a loud voice,Eclipse?

    The Hobgoblins scream, Intruders! and raise their weapons.

    Krondor runs straight down the stairs, the momentum from coming down the stepspropelling him faster. He runs straight at one of the Hobgoblins. The ugly creatures raiseshis weapon ready to swing it and then a look of horror crosses its ugly face as he realizesthe Dwarf is not going to stop.

    Before the creature can move or react the Dwarf barges into him and knocks him flyingback into the pit. Its scream last for 3 seconds before a loud splash is heard and then nosound comes from the pit.

    The rest of the party rush down.

    More Hobgoglins emerge into the area, coming from side passages. Further ahead, downa long northern passage can be seen a VERY large giant spider that is being held in asteel cage.

    Some of the Hobgoblins try running north to the cage.

    Isabella yells out, Dont let them open that cage or this battle will be over for us!

    Favion, Elamros and Isabella from their elevated position on the stairs shoot arrow andbolt towards any of the Hobgoblins that make their way to the steel cage that holds thegiant spider. One manages to reach it and begins to untie the rope that holds the door shutbut the Hobgoblin fails to open it before an arrow lodges in the back of its neck.

    The battle goes on and the brave heroes barely hold their ground. Delina casts magic toand fro across the room, Krondors battle axe hurls death through the air, the lightning fasthands and feet of the Monk break bone and rupture organ, Isabellas morning star crushesskull, and the pair of Favion and Elamros hurl death from above with a rain of arrows.

    So fierce and so desperate is the battle that Krondor invokes the healing ability of his

    enchanted armour and Shield Of Protection, as to does Isabella use her healing powers toclose up the wounds of the party.

    Eventually only the party remain standing and the giant spider is still trapped within itscage. The monstrous creature bashes against the bars forcibly trying to get out and spitsout venomous liquid from between the bars.

    Favion, Elamros and Isabella all move towards the cage, careful not to get too close, andprepare to kill the creature from the safety of outside the cage with bow and crossbow.

    Delina speaks in a distasteful voice, I will not watch an animal, even an evil one like that,being shot to death whilst it poses no direct threat to me. She walks outside of the room.

    The Monk of Irori follows her out, This doesnt seem right. I will wait with Delina.

    Eventually the giant spider is killed. The still body lies on the cold stone; dozens of arrowsand bolts sticking out of it.

    *******

    After searching the area the party proceed eastwards. The Monk notices two flagstones in

    the floor appear to be misaligned from the others around it.

    Elamros searches the area and discovers a pressure pad trap set to lower a portcullis fromthe stone ceiling. The Half-elf spends a few minutes and disables the mechanism; lockingthe pressure pad in place.

    Carefully they enter a large room that has a large wooden table covered with cups, bowlsand maps. In one corner of the room are numerous boxes and crates.

    More wooden doors lead from this room on the southern and eastern walls.

    The party start to search the room. Krondor guards the south door and Favion guards theeast door.

    The party is unaware that Hobgoblin eyes are watching them from the southern door,peering through a hidden eye hole.

    Some very edible food and fine bottles of wine are found amongst the boxes. Krondorturns towards the boxes when he hears this. Wine? Did you say wine? Some strongDwarven ale would be better but it will do.

    The Hobgoblin eyes, behind the southern door, see the Dwarfs attention turned. The dooris flung open as four Hobgoblins rush the Dwarf. One tries to grab the Dwarf but Krondorshrugs him off.

    Favion shoots an arrow into the group of Hobgoblins as the rest of the party prepare formore combat.

    Standing behind the Hobgoblins is another, particularly large Hobgoblin with a steeleyepatch bolted to his skull over his left eye. He clutches a blood-stained spear with manynotches carved into the haft, and his shield is sheathed in flayed skin.

    The Hobgoblins try to get past the open wooden door but Krondor and Isabella hold theirground attacking the on coming foes.

    The large one eyed Hobgoblin moves over to a rope and pulls it. A loud bell can be heardfrom the east door.

    The Monk races up to the eastern door, Ill hold this door. He stands in front of it just as itbursts open and more Hobgoblins come running through.

    Favion and Elamros jumped onto the wooden table and let lose arrows at the on comingcreatures. The party are now caught in a desperate battle - fighting on two fronts.

    The large one eyed Hobgoblin pushes his way through the door and the other Hobgoblinfollow through.

    The battle is so fierce and chaotic that Krondor mistakingly hits himself in the leg with hisown battle axe and Favion accidentally steps off the wooden table and falls flat on hisback. Isabella is forced once again to use her Cleric powers and send healing energy toheal most of the party whilst the combat still rages.

    Eventually, one by one, the Hobgoblins fall. The large one eyed Hobgoblin takes a lot ofdamage and even Delina, fighting for her life, has to strike at him repeatedly with her sicklebut in the end only the party remain standing.

    *******After resting for a few minutes to catch their breath after that tough battle, the party explorethe rooms. A chest is found that contains 380 gold pieces and a small sword in a leathersheath. Isabella casts Detect Magic and the sword is revealed to be of arcane origin. BothIsabella and Favion attempt to determine the arcane properties of the sword but areunable to do so.

    A lever is found that allows the metal portcullis to be raised or lowered so it can secure thisarea. The party restock on the supplies here and grab much food and rations, which theysorely need.

    After lowering the portcullis the party set up camp and eat a well earned meal. They aretired, sore and most of the spells available to the parties spell casters have been used up.The party lay out their bedrolls and retire for the night. The order for the watch for the nightwill be Krondor, the Monk, Delina, Isabella, Elamros and lastly Favion.

    And that is where the play session ended.
