The Philippines was a seemingly remote country in South East Asia until recently, when the tourism campaign “more fun in the Philippines” drew the attention of tourists from all over. In 2014, the Philippines bagged the Destination of the Year Award from TTG, Asia-Pacific’s most prestigious award giving body for the travel industry. With over 4 million tourist arrivals in 2014—more than 200% increase in a decade—the Philippines is set to be among the premier destinations in the region, alongside Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. With only a handful of small upscale resorts, and only 28 internationally-branded and managed hotels in the country, the lack in supply of upscale accommodations has become apparent over the years. On top of that, the region is obviously experiencing a growing trend in ecotourism, but the Philippines has yet to answer that call. As the country is woefully short in supply of getaways that will appeal to sophisticated world travellers, developing an environmentally savvy island getaway that caters to their different needs—whether it be to relax, work, or play—will place the Philippines in the map, as the premier destination for environmentally-responsible vacations.

This culturally-rich region sits on the southernmost part of the Luzon island, right in the middle of the Philippine archipelago.

The Bicol peninsula is mostly bordered by the sea, which explains the numerous marine sanctuaries

surrounding the area.

Bicol is best known for the perfect cone-shaped Mayon Volcano, in the province of Albay, and the gentle giants of the

sea, the Butanding, in Donsol, Sorsogon.

Economically, the region is viewed as a viable place for investing in maritime and tourism ventures because of its

proximity to Manila and the Visayan region.

SORSOGON Home to the famed Bulusan Volcano National Park and its

scenic crater lake, Sorsogon has seen monumental growth in the tourist arrivals. With the myriad of unspoilt beaches and abundant marine life attracting visitors worldwide, tourism

growth was recorded at 46.18% from 2012, with 233,981 tourist arrivals recorded in 2013.
