As I am writing this note to you, construction workers are blowing the leaves off the newly renovated parking lot in preparation for the fi nal walk through – the point where the contractor turns the use of the parking lot back over to the owner. Wow…it is almost done! This $599,000 part of the recent renovations to the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena saw the parking lot redesigned to incorporate a state of the art fi ltration system. Because this special design cleans surface runoff water before it empties into Cowichan Lake - an ecosystem that houses several salmon species and one endangered fi sh species, and is a major source of water for the Cowichan Valley - Cowichan Lake Recreation qualifi ed for $367,000 in gas tax funding to help defray costs. The CVRD Going Green Newsletter Fall 2011 reported the following: “Riprap (broken stones used as a foundation layer), compost, and vegetation are laid in a swale (a wide and shallow ditch) that surrounds the parking lot, creating a bioswale. Rainwater washes over the parking lot and slowly fi lters through the bioswale, which is designed to maximize the amount of time it takes the water to pass through. A bioretention area consisting of a grass buffer strip, a sand bed, a ponding area, an organic or mulch layer, planting soil, and plants will treat storm water. Runoff passes over or through the sand bed, which slows the storm water’s velocity and distributes the water evenly along the length of the ponding area. Over a period of several days, the pond water is fi ltered into the underlying soils. The new parking lot’s bioretention area and bioswale trap grit, silt, dust, and automotive pollutants, preventing them from contaminating the environment and groundwater”. Staff and user groups are very proud of our newly renovated facility. Stop by and have a look, sign up for a program and stay active!

Yours in recreation,Linda BlatchfordManager, Cowichan Lake Recreation

Wee Hands -Sign Language with Karen Workshop0-2 Yrs (A)#3995 3-4 Yrs (B)#3996 Long before your baby can speak she/he has the ability to understand speech and wants to communicate with you. Most babies are able to sign back to you by the time they are 8-12 months of age. Improved communication will ease baby’s frustrations by allowing them to communi-cate with people around them. They are able to communicate their needs and this takes some of the guess work out of pre-speech parenting, resulting in fewer and milder “witching hours”. We will also focus on how and when to teach these signs using games and strategies that focus on age-appropriate language development.Instructor: Karen Russell-LustDay of Week: ThursdayDate of Program: 16 FebTime: (A)1:00-1:45 pm(B)2:00-3:00 pmCost: $10Place: CLSA Multi-Purpose Room
