When you go to a playground, which piece of equipment do
you most enjoy playing on and why?
www.planbee.com
Let’s have a look at some different types of playground equipment. As you look, think about
these questions...
What is it made from?
What is it used for?
What is it called?
How do you use it?

These are swings. The main frame is made from
metal. The chains holding the seat to the frame are also metal. The seats are made from rubber.

These are tyre swings. The frame for these swings is made from wood.

from old car tyres.

This is a rocking horse. It has a spring which makes the horse rock backwards and forwards when you sit on it. The spring is made from metal. The
horse is made from wood and is painted, and the handles are made from
plastic.

This is a slide. The frame is made from wood with metal railings. There are
two ways you could climb up to the top of the slide. Can you spot them?

This is a seesaw. Seesaws have a plank which balances on a
central support. When one end goes up, the other goes down. This
makes the people sitting on each end go up and down too! This seesaw has metal handles and
plastic seats.

This is a roundabout. This whole roundabout is
made from painted metal. Roundabouts spin around a central point.
This one has yellow handles so you can hold on and not fall off while
it is spinning!

This is a metal climbing frame. It
has a set of monkey bars that you can swing on as well as other parts you can
climb.

Can you think of any other types of playground equipment?

Over the next few lessons, we will be exploring different types of playground to help us design, make and evaluate our own
models of playground equipment. To do this, we will need to look
really closely at some examples...
Which of these is your favourite? Choose one!
