W H E N MY G O O D F R I E N D A N D C L I E N TEarl Orser asked me to get involvedon the Ivey Advisory Board, I was in-trigued. The request coincided withmy 25th class reunion, and it seemedto me appropriate to leverage mymany years of international businessexperience by supporting the Schoolthat started me on this path.

Before I made my final decision, Imet with Dean Larry Tapp, who gaveme what I call his “stem-winder”speech, describing his vision for theSchool’s future. Listening to him, Iwas hooked on that vision.

But vision without leadership andcapability is little more than halluci-nation. What really impressed meabout Larry and his executive team isthat they are people with a bias forexecution, not just intellectual de-bate. Above all, I was intrigued by thenotion that Larry Tapp was runningt h e I v e y B u s i n e s sSchool as a business– what a novel idea!

I knew, too, thatsince I had graduat-e d , I v e y h a d t r u l yr i s e n t o b e c o m e aworld-class institu-tion. This success iswitnessed not only by the success of itsgraduates, but also byits rankings in manyleading publications.I t wa s c l e a r t o m ethat the School hadvision, leadership andcapability – and that

made the equation work for me.At my first meeting of the Adviso-

ry Board, I immediately knew that Ihad made the right decision. I foundmyself surrounded by a group of topbusiness leaders – men and womenwith real impact and influence in thecommunities in which they operate.It was clear to me that they werepassionate about the Ivey BusinessSchool. They were also passionateabout the need for Canada to edu-cate business leaders, so that thiscountry can participate as a leadingmember of the global community.

It is now my privilege to chair thisgroup of 55 to 60 outstanding men and women. We have our work cut outfor us. Despite the School’s achieve-ments in recent years, there is muchstill to be accomplished. Working with Dean Tapp, the Advisory Board has proved that it can make a real

contribution to thestrategic directiono f t h e S c h o o l .Indeed, this andother boards andcouncils are essen-tial in ensuring thatIvey remains at-tuned to the needsand issues of thebusiness communi-ty. I look forward tothe challenges thatlie ahead, and I en-courage my fellowalumni to seek op-portunities to be in-volved with Ivey. ■

The median annual salary for

Surviving and Thriving: entrepreneurstake lessons from entrepreneursL A S T Y E A R T H E I V E Y I N S T I T U T E O F Entrepreneurship Council came up witha bright idea: a conference where entre-preneurs could learn from entrepre-

neurs. The result was Surviv-ing and Thriving, a conferencethat attracted 130 participantson October 17 at Toronto.

The reunion included a special Iveylearning experience: a workshop thatfocused on Hong Kong’s future and thechanging role of China as it enters theWorld Trade Organization. The keynotespeaker of the event was Allan Zeman,a Canadian with an outstanding recordof business achievement and contribu-tion to Hong Kong, and also a memberof Ivey’s Advisory Board.

At the alumni dinner UWO PresidentDr. Paul Davenport honoured Dr. HenryCheng (HBA ’71, MBA ’72, and LLD ’97) forhis outstanding contributions to theIvey School and The University of West-ern Ontario. Dr. Cheng became the firstrecipient outside of Canada to receivethe University’s prestigious Purple andWhite Award. In his speech to the grad-uating EMBA class, he imparted adviceand wisdom from old Chinese proverbs.

By the time Dale Oliver was 23, he had owned three busi-nesses, doubled his money on a property deal, talked his wayinto the HBA program, completed his degree, and lost every-thing in an unsuccessful venture.

Oliver,who completed an HBA in 1969 and an MBA in 1971,sayshis Ivey education gave him the technical skills and disciplined ap-proach to analysis he needed for long-term entrepreneurial suc-cess.Today,he has interests in seven different businesses in Cana-da and the U.K., ranging from retail concept development andadvertising sales to publishing and software development.

Several years ago, he became concerned with the level ofservice the School offered its alumni.“It seemed to my friendsand me that Ivey was asking us for money all the time, but do-ing very little for us.” Given his strongly expressed feelings, he

was a natural choice whenthe new Ivey Alumni Asso-ciation Board of Directorswas established.

Oliver is chair of the Lead-ership Development andRecognition Committee,whichhas developed a series of specialawards for Ivey alumni and fac-ulty, today a key component of Ivey’s Homecoming celebrations. He isnow working on other ideas to provide graduates with meaningfulbenefits.“When you’re an alumnus,membership should have its ben-efits,”he says.“We also want to involve more alumni in the School.”

Oliver is pleased with the progress the Alumni Association Boardhas made in its first four years, but says there’s plenty more to do.“We have to keep our eye on the ball and remember that we are rep-resenting alumni. What we do has to have a benefit for the alumniand if it does, it automatically benefits the School.”

Ivey also belongs to a London or-ganization called Global Workplace.Global Workplace is an alliance of 27of the world’s leading businessschools, including Kellogg, Darden,Stanford, LBS and IESE, that orga-nizes regular speaker events. In Sep-tember, they hosted Chris Ingram,Chairman and Founder of the Tem-pus Group, a leading marketing andcommunications group, who spokeabout his views and experiences onestablishing a global business. AllChapter members who have submit-ted their e-mail addresses to Gammreceive invitations to these events –opportunities to network with eachother and with graduates of otherleading global business schools.

Gamm hopes to use the AlumniAssociation to raise the profile ofIvey in London and Europe, wherethe School does not enjoy the recog-nition it receives in Canada or Asia.

T H E L O N D O N C H A P T E R H O L D S O N E event per year, with Dean Larry Tappproviding much of the recent incen-tive to get together. For the past twoyears, The Dean has allowed time inhis schedule to update alumni onthe progress of the school and theeffor ts to earn Ivey recognit ionamong the top 20 business schoolsworldwide. Last year, members werealso given a presentation by repre-sentatives of Coutts Private Banking,who spoke about tax planning in theU.K. A group of alumni are workingto set up the Ivey Society U.K. Chari-ty, a charitable trust to raise fundsfor the school. A great deal of workhas already been done and the Soci-ety should be formed by early 2002.

“Most people in London are sur-prised to hear that there is anothercity called London in Canada, and areeven more surprised to hear that ithas its own Thames River,” he says.“By raising the awareness of Ivey inthe London business community, wehope to change this.”

The Event in the Tent also featuredthe presentation of the Ivey Distin-guished Service Award by the Ivey Alum-ni Association Board of Directors to threeexceptional honorees – Ron Charles, MBA’71, Ken Harrigan, HBA ’51, and Jim Hunter,MBA ’76. The Alumni Faculty ServiceAward was presented to Professor Emer-itus John Graham, MBA ’58, and ProfessorMichael Parent in recognition of their ex-traordinary service to Ivey alumni.

On Saturday evening, the excitementculminated in an all-class Gala attendedby more than 500 people. The gueststhoroughly enjoyed the “Space Odyssey”experience, complete with new-agetechnology, a cocktail reception and ele-

M O R E T H A N 8 5 0 A L U M N I A N D T H E I R guests returned to the Ivey BusinessSchool for Homecoming throughoutthe weekend of September 28 to 30.On Friday, the weekend kicked off withthe Ivey Alumni Association LondonChapter’s seventh annual golf tourna-ment. Some 125 golfers enjoyed a roundof golf with their classmates on a per-fect autumn day. The Saturday programincluded School tours by current stu-dents, demonstrations of the latestwireless LAN technology, and an oppor-tunity for classmates and friends toreminisce while enjoying a complimen-tary continental breakfast. Later, morethan 600 people gathered for the Eventin the Tent multi-media presentation,during which Gilles Lamoureux, MBA ’66

gant dinner, and great entertainmentfrom vocalist Denise Pelley and a 16-piece band. As Niels Billou, HBA ’91, MBA’96 wrote, “You did an amazing job inhelping us reconnect with old friendsand renew our ties with everyone whomade our experience at Ivey such a spe-cial and extraordinary one.”

On Sunday, many reunion classesmet for a farewell brunch. The gradu-ates of 50 years or earlier joined DeanTapp for the time-honored GoldenAlumni brunch. It was a perfect finaleto a memory-filled weekend.

Starting in 1957, Harrison andWallace McCain built McCain Foodsfrom a single-plant frozen foodprocessor in F lorencevi l le , NewBrunswick to one of the largestproducers of frozen food in theworld. Harrison continues to leadthe world-class company as a chair-man. Since 1995, Wallace has beenChairman of Maple Leaf Foods.

Today, McCain Foods Limited op-erates plants in 13 countries on fivec o n t i n e n t s a n d i s t h e w o r l d ’slargest food processor. Both McCainFoods and Maple Leaf Foods havedemonstrated that Canadian com-panies can successfully competewith the best in the world.

O N LY T H E M O ST D E TA I L E D R OA D M A P will lead you to Redtail Golf Club. YetQueen Elizabeth II has stayed there, andWayne Gretzky and Sean Connery are reg-ulars. Few who chance on Redtail’s gateswould realize they had stumbled acrossthe most exclusive golf club in the country.

On October 1st the closest friends of Ivey – Advisory and Alumni Boardmembers, Regional Steering Committeemembers and Ivey Society donors –were invited to enjoy Redtail. Our thirdtournament of its kind came on a beau-tiful, warm fall day. With 6,621 yardsplayed to a slope rating of 147, Redtailoffered an outstanding challenge to ourgolfers. As Wayne White, MBA ’72, said,“This was one of the most enjoyablegames of my life. The greens were assmooth as glass.”Wayne’s team, includ-ing his brother Bill White, MBA ’69, andBill’s sons Michael White, MBA ’00 andKris White, won the tournament.

Next year, make sure you’re on the in-vitation list. Alumni who have volun-teered their time and talent and providedleadership gifts at the Ivey Society levelwill be invited next year. Support theSchool, get involved and become one ofthe few who have experienced Redtail. ■

As VP, Pro-grams, for the Alumni Chapter inBritish Columbia, and as Chair ofIvey’s first International Alumni Busi-ness Conference in Whistler, I havereceived my share of feedback fromalumni around the world on whattypes of programming they findmost beneficial. Based on this typeof feedback, the committee recom-mends key components for Home-coming, reunions and special eventsand develops new ideas for program-m i n g t h at re co n -nect alumni back tothe school, the fac-ulty, and each other.

page 12). Since 1991, the Ivey Busi-ness Leader Award Dinner has raisedover $600,000 to support two inter-national student awards and theToronto Chapter’s Faculty Fellowshipin Business Leadership.

Currently the committee is assist-ing on plans for Ivey’s Third AlumniGlobal Videoconference with speakerStephen McDonald, MBA ‘83 CEO, TDWaterhouse, Vice-Chairman, TD Bankand Chair, Ivey Annual Fund Council.This year, the event will be shown as alive web cast to allow alumni all overthe world to participate.

A recent focus of the committee isto incorporate students into the de-velopment of alumni events and toinitiate more contact between alumniand current students. We feel thatthere is a captive group of futurealumni at the School for two years.Engaging them in alumni eventswhile at the School is one way to en-sure active alumni upon graduation. ■

How does Ivey’s percentage of in-ternational students compare withother business schools? The num-ber of international students at Iveyhas been going up steadily. Thisyear 43 percent of our incomingMBA students are landed immi-grants or visa students.This is high-er than the typical U.S. school, but

How does the Hong Kong campusadd to Ivey’s stature as a globalschool? Ivey is the first North Amer-ican business school to establish acampus in Asia. The School offersan Executive MBA and non-degreeExecutive programs at the ChengYu Tung Management Institute inHong Kong. Exposing our faculty tothe international environment on aregular basis helps them under-stand the world in a more completeway. It’s the same thing with com-panies – they start to move peoplearound when they want to becomemore internationally oriented. Youcan’t get and maintain an interna-tional perspective if you never leaveyour office or your country.

The scope of Ivey’s internationalteaching goes well beyond HongKong. Ivey faculty members alsoconduct case teaching and casewriting workshops each year in Sin-gapore, China, Canada, U.S., andother countries. How important are the Ivey Ex-change programs in creating an in-ternational focus? At Ivey, one outof every six or seven students in theHBA and MBA programs takes partin an exchange. Ivey students havea lot of choice (see sidebar). Whenyou look at the proportion of stu-dents who are interested in ex-changes, it shows that the cus-tomer clearly thinks an intern-ational perspective is useful.

What is Ivey doing in other parts ofthe world, like South America or Eu-rope? We’re taking some of whatwe’ve learned in Asia, especially inHong Kong and China and Singapore,and taking that to other parts of theworld. We have just begun to startselling translations of our cases inFrench. I’m negotiating with a varietyof groups in Latin America,about see-

ing our cases translated into Spanishand possibly even Portuguese. Smallnumbers of Ivey cases have alreadybeen translated into German, Russ-ian,Korean,and Spanish.

What are Ivey’s strengths in globalresearch? Ivey has had a long tradi-tion of very good researchers in theinternational business area.We wererecently ranked as the number oneschool in the world for internationalstrategy research. In the area of in-ternational joint ventures and al-liances we’re also number one in theworld. On top of these strengths,we’ve also got people in every areagroup in the School writing interna-tionally oriented research. From 1992to 1997, Ivey was the editorial homefor the Journal of International Busi-ness Studies, the premier journal inthe international business area. Iveyfaculty members increasingly serveon the editorial boards of a large

When the opportunity to doan exchange came up, Archerjumped at it. “For me it was theo n l y way t o g e t s o m e t h i n g international on my resume,”she says. “And it’s hard to getinterviews with internationalcompanies if you have neverworked outside your own coun-try.” Just as important, it wasan opportunity to achieve somepersonal independence. “I’venever spent this long outsidemy own country.”

Although her English is excel-lent, Archer says she must some-times search for the right wordto express her thoughts. She ad-mits it wasn’t easy at first to in-tegrate into Ivey classrooms,but after the first month, shefound Canadianstudents wereb e g i n n i n g t oopen up, includeher more in theird i s c u s s i o n s and invite her to their homesand parties.

A l t h o u g hRSM uses somecases, it is pri-marily a lecture-based program,so the highly in-teractive natureo f I v e y c l a s s -rooms was alsoan adjustment. “The participa-tion thing is one of the most dif-ficult things for a lot of ex-change students, especially ifyou’re not used to it in yourcountry. But there are classeswhere participation is 50 to 70per cent of the grade, so you

Archer qualified as a pharma-cist in 1989. In 1995, she boughta virtually bankrupt pharmacyand turned it around, achievinggrowth of 50 per cent a year forseveral years. By the late 90s,however, the business was sta-ble. “For me, all the fun wasgone,” she says. She was nearly40 by then, and decided that itwa s t i m e t o m a ke a c a re e rchange. She sold her business,and spent a year and a halfworking for the pharmaceuticalwholesale company that boughtit. At the end of that time, shehad decided on an MBA, and af-ter applying to several pro-grams, chose the RotterdamSchool of Management (RSM).

Archer has found Canadiansvery friendly and is enjoying thelow-key atmosphere of London,Ontario. “I worked in the Haguein a bad area, so everybody hadto fight to survive. Here, it’s morelike the villages in the Nether-lands. I really like it.” Comingfrom a small and intensely-pop-ulated country, she is also fasci-nated by Ontario’s wide-opens p a c e s . “ I n E u ro p e w e h avemountains and forests, but youknow that behind every treethere is a house and people liv-ing. Here you can go for miles

before you seea house.”

When she re-t u r n s t o t h eN e t h e r l a n d sand completesher MBA, Archerexpects to workfor a Europeanpharmaceuticalwholesaler. Justas a handful ofcompanies ownv i r t u a l l y a l lpharmacies inNorth America,a similar trendis happening

in Europe. Archer says her com-binat ion of pharmaceuticalknowledge, hands-on manage-ment experience and interna-t i o n a l b u s i n e s s e d u c a t i o nshould suit her well for seniorm a n a g e m e nt i n o n e o f t h egrowing chains. ■

idence right next door to theSchool, alongside more than 80other students from around theworld. “The School puts a lot ofresources behind its interna-tional program,” he says. “Theyreal ly pamper you.” Specialevents during his stay includeda trip to northern Sweden tohike on the Arctic Circle, an ex-cursion to Finland and a confer-ence in Milan with four otheruniversities. With so many in-ternational students, the onlychallenge, he found, was get-ting to know Swedish students.“You have to make the effort togo to social events, stop themin the hall and ask questions,whatever it takes,” he says.

Ramadori’s courses were alltaught in English. Although heparticipated in Swedish conver-sation classes, he found thatmost Swedesspoke impec-cable Englishand didn’t ex-p e c t h i m t ouse their lan-g u a g e . T h eSchool has astrong focuson economicsa n d f i n a n c ea n d u s e s acombinationof case-baseda n d l e c t u r emethod teach-ing. SAM RAMADORION SEPTEMBER 14, THREE DAYS AFTER the terrorist attacks in New Yorkand Washington, Sam Ramadori,MBA ’02, stood outside the U.S.embassy in Stockholm.

“The whole city just came to astop,” he marvels. “No cars mov-ing, no honking, no traffic sounds– everything silent. Nothing hap-pened for three minutes.”

For Ramadori, the intensity ofemotion in Sweden in the after-math of the attacks was a revela-tion. But that was only one ofmany discoveries he made as anexchange student at the Stock-holm School of Economics.

Ramadori is a lawyer by trade.He completed his law degree inQuebec at the age of 23, thenqualified to practice in both Que-bec and Ontario. After beingcalled to the bar he spent a yearworking in London, England andNew York in the area of mergersand acquisitions. Ultimately, hedecided that the legal side of M & A didn’t satisfy his stronginterest in business, and he de-cided an MBA was the next step.

Ramadori loves to travel. Hisgoal is a career in internationalbusiness, so Ivey’s strong ex-change program was an impor-tant factor in his decision tocome to the School. He spent thesummer after his first year work-ing for Bain and Company andhas an offer to return to the con-sulting firm when he graduates.

Ramadori also gained a newunderstanding of differences inbusiness philosophy and ap-proach from country to country.“In Sweden organizations tendto be much flatter,” he says.“They shy away from pyramidalorganizational structures. Theyprefer to create teams thatsolve problems and come backwith solut ions, rather thanhaving the boss be more direc-tive.” Learning how businessis conducted in European coun-tries, which often have strongs o c i a l w e l fa re s y s t e m s a n dmore state involvement in com-merce, was an eye-opener, too.“Being in Canada, right next tothe U.S., you see changes hap-pening in the world through a

In its inauguralyear, 28 student instructors taught175 students at two sites in Russia.Now entering its twelfth year, theLEADER project has taught morethan 3,000 students at sites in Rus-sia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan,Lithuania and Latvia. LEADER in-structors are drawn primarily fromthe MBA program and are carefullyselected and trained throughoutthe year leading up to their tour ofduty. The program is funded primar-

May 4At OmskEnerga [the energy companywhere Dave and his partner Tomtaught] we were treated well. To-day we taught from 8:30 until 2:30.Our students are 31 executives whoare from various divisions aroundSiberia and some from City Hall. Itwas scary being in front of a class,and difficult to work through thetranslator. They are bright peoplewith various undergraduate de-grees and most of them have beenin the business for many years. Theclass ranges in age from 28 to 50.Most of them are here on their hol-idays as the company would notgive them time off, but instead ofholidays they wanted to take ourcourse. They are very keen and itwas good to see how involved they

got today during the case exam-ple I gave them.

May 5 Just fin-ished another day at Omsk Energa.I did two lectures today and Tomtaught the case. The class is inter-ested in the cases; they listen at-tentively and are a very friendlygroup. They are also very brightand pick up on concepts quickly.

May 12 Todaythe class was fun. A woman in our classhad her 45th birthday so we ended theclass early. All of a sudden the tableswere set up in the centre of the room,tonnes of food came out of nowhere,vodka and cognac,and lots of cakes aswell! It was a well-organized party. Thetoasts started and I had to pretend todrink so that I didn't have too much.Man,they love to give toasts!! I had toomuch vodka and went to bed early(10pm) and was sick! Horrible feeling!

May 19 Someof our students took us to the Om-sk Energa banya. It was great! Itwas such a totally Russian experi-ence. In the morning the guys,Tomand I played a game of soccer. Wethen went to the banya, which is really a sauna. There were abouteight of us. From the sauna wejumped into a horrible-lookingswimming pool or showered offwith cooler water. Our studentsbrought birch branches that weused to whip ourselves!! It was re-ally weird, but afterwards I feltreally refreshed and my skin felthealthy. We had a huge barbecue –lots of food and lots of mosquitoes!After dinner the students per-formed a ‘Tom and Dave’ skit, wherethey pretended to be us and therest of the students pretended tobe groups that we had formed inclass! It was really funny! They tried

Ifeel it is important to set the propertone and get the class started offon the right foot.The introductionswere lengthy, mostly due to thetranslation process, but the stu-dents were interesting. Many of thestudents spoke English (both ablessing and a blight), a few werefrom Kazakhstan, one was heir to alordship, and several of them hadthe same name. Also interesting isthe similarity of the students toCanadian students. Many of themwere unsure of their future and didn’t know what they wanted todo. Some had aspirations of travel,or of moving into a big city likeMoscow. All of them were brimmingwith energy. I can see that it will bedifficult to keep this class in line.

May 8 The moreI get to know them, the more Ilove the students here. They arevery friendly, and remind me ofpeople back home. I learned that

to do it in English, but their Englishis terrible and I don't think theyknew what they were saying!! Lotsof good laughs and toasts to ournew friends.

May 27 Onour last night in Omsk, we went toa little pub down the way to have afew beers. The band played theirusual English music. We ended upstaying there till closing and thencame home to finish packing be-fore Yuri came to pick us up to takeus to the airport. I was amazed tosee 15 of our students waiting tosay good-bye to us at the airport. Itis Sunday morning at around 6 amand they are all there to say good-bye!!! It was very touching. Theygave Tom and me each a book onFinance (in Russian, so can’t readit).We said our final good-byes andthen Peter, Damion, Tom and Iboarded the plane for Moscow.

It was really an incredible ex-perience in Omsk. What amazedme the most was how 1.3 millionpeople can live in a city that is -40 degrees for a lot of the time,and then dusty and hot for theother few months. But they goabout life happy, going through allthe same major life events that wedo – birth, graduation, jobs, mar-riage, children – and they celebrateand make the most of their lives. Itis a really humbling experience.

May 3 Today is my birthday. I celebrated thefirst few minutes of my birthdaywaking up to cold frigid air – theair of Siberia – while descendingthe stairs of a small twin-engineplane onto the tarmac at 6:00 am.Our motley crew of half-asleepand weary-eyed travelers was metby our primary contact, Yuri, andseveral translators who we will beworking with.

two of our students were gettingmarried in the fall. That nightsome of the students cooked forus. We had some Russian dishes.Even with my conservative pallet,I was still full by the end. Someother students came afterwards.We got beer for the guys, and icecream for the girls. Afterwards wewent to a local club.

May 11 Anotherstudent in our class was celebratinga birthday. We celebrated in a pubinside a cinema. Over several bot-tles of vodka and Moldavian whiskywe talked of sports and politics,future plans, and friendships. Wemade several toasts – this is a Russ-ian tradition – and enjoyed our-selves greatly. One of the studentsthere was the son of an oil tycoon,and another, the son of a majorgovernment official. Most of theseguys have real future – the Russianleaders of tomorrow. I couldn’t helpwondering what was in store forthem in the years ahead. WouldRussia rise again to become a majoreconomic power or sink back intocommunism? Only time will tell,but these boys will be the onesmaking it happen.

Throughthe statues of Lenin and memo-rials I am walking, watchingteens playing in flowers whilesmall children are trying theirfirst cigarettes – they are proba-bly no more than 9 years old. Ilook upon the aging buildingsand forlorn streets and am weary

May 15 Today Iamazed even myself. I went look-ing for a bank to exchange somemoney. I called all of our transla-tors, but no one was home, so I setoff on my own. I asked the buildingadministrator and she directed meto a nearby bank. When I arrived ithad already closed. What was I todo? I asked a local police officer ifthere were any other banks nearby.After some initial problems withcommunication, he offered to takeme in his police jeep to search outsome banks. Who was I to say no?So we visited different banks andcouldn’t find one that was open.My new found friends then resort-ed to other means. They trackeddown an “entrepreneurial” money-

– I will be happy to be home.Yet I am truly grateful for myexperience, my travels, and ambetter for it.

May 4The in-troductions went fairly well to-day although some of the stu-dents looked bored. I suspect thatsome of the material was too ba-sic for them. Teaching through atranslator is a bit difficult but Ithink we’ll manage well enough.Ludmilla (the translator) is verygood and quite friendly.

Teaching note: this class has alot of experience. Many of the stu-dents are directors and VPs or theyown their own businesses. It feelsa bit odd to be standing at thefront of the class teaching them.

May 7 Teach-ing today went much better thanyesterday. I did the size-up for the case then Paul walked themthrough the numbers. It tookthree hours to get through thewhole thing but at least they wereinterested and involved.

Still trying to adjust to teachingthrough an interpreter. Both Pauland I are going to try to work onspeaking in shorter sentences andwith longer pauses so that Lud-milla will be able to keep up.

May 9 Rain.Rain. Rain. Thought about skip-ping the parade but… when will Iever get the chance to celebrateVictory Day in Ekaterinburg again?So I braved the weather by dress-ing in layers and borrowing abright blue, ridiculous-looking,plastic poncho from Lachlan.

full-time jobs. Case-prep time isnot always available for them andhaving classes over the weekendis not the ideal format.

May 22 Whoknew that teaching a case couldbe such a rewarding experience!Today I taught a case for Ivan andLisa’s class [at the local university]and it was really enjoyable. Now I understand what LEADER is sup-posed to be all about! The stu-dents were attentive, talkative,well prepared, and participating.What a pleasure to teach stu-dents like that!

May 27 Offto Moscow today. Quite a memo-rable experience in E-burg. It wasdifficult at times but I learned alot – not only from my fellow Iveystudents but from the course ma-terial itself and from the students.Despite the fact that I’ve got quite

snow. If I hadn’t been soakingand shivering , I might havethought it was quite pretty. Theparade itself was quite amazing.Hundreds of soldiers were linedup around the square calling outthree cheers. It was quite anamazing sight.

May 14Thisafternoon, we visited a film stu-dio where one of our students(Michael) is a finance director. Itwas particularly interesting forme since I have a background inpublishing and am interested inbecoming involved in the enter-tainment industry. We toured thestudio and then sat with Michaeland one of the producers and dis-cussed possible strategies for the future of the company. Theyhad a lot of ideas for developing their real estate but not a lot ofthoughts for developing theirfilm house. It was about as closeto “base level” strategy planningas you can get. Their main con-cerns were that they had difficul-ty competing with the big stu-dios in Moscow and St. Peters-burg. Their competition had bigbudgets and the lure of the bigcity to attract top name talent.We left them with our thoughtsand they seemed pleased withour visit.

May 21 Sun-day was the last day of teachingand unfortunately, it ended on alow note. We tried to use a discus-sion format to keep the interestlevel of the students up but:a. Only nine people showed up for

the classb.Two out of the nine were sleepingc. The rest of the students didn’t

feel that the case was relevantto Russia and they asked if wecould end the class early.

It was disappointing to end theprogram this way. It was a diffi-cult site to teach at because allthe students are executives with

a bit of experience teaching, thiswas by far, the most challengingteaching experience I’ve everfaced. I’m looking forward tomeeting up with the rest of theLeader groups in Moscow to heartheir experiences. ■

From the Playing Field to the Board RoomMany Ivey students are also outstanding athletes, often competing at the university ornational level while completing their demanding programs. Does the discipline and hardwork of competitive sport give them an edge in the business world? Is sport truly ametaphor for life? InTouch talked to Bill Britton, HBA ’58, and three other Ivey graduates.

I T ’ S O D D H O W O N E S P O R T W I L Lcapture the heart and soul of an athlete capable of playing many.In Bill Britton’s case, the sport is foot-ball.His love for the game has scarce-ly abated during a long and success-ful career in business and law.Todayhe watches from the sidelines as a director of the Denver Broncos,butit’s clear that the memories of hisplaying days are still vivid.

Britton played baseball, hockeyand basketball in grade school. Inhis first year at Catholic CentralHigh School in London, Ontario, hewas too skinny for football, but byGrade 10, he had grown and wasready to don the pads. “It was thecamaraderie with your teammatesand the sense of purpose and fo-cus,” Britton says, explaining theorigins of his passion. “I liked thecontact – and I just loved being outin the rain and the snow. Playing at all levels, I really enjoyed thefriendship of teammates”

After four years of high schoolfootball, Britton moved on to the

University of Western Ontario. In hisfirst year, he made the famous Mus-tang football team and began play-ing as a running back for legendarycoach, J.P. Metras. That year theteam, quarterbacked by Don Getty,HBA ’55, made it to the champi-onship game but lost a heartbreakerto the University of Toronto Blues.The next two years were a period ofbuilding. By his final year, the Mus-tangs hit their stride.“We had someoutstanding players,” Britton re-members. “We had depth and a lotof skill. It was a team that was sim-ply too strong for the competition.”They didn’t lose a game all season.

Throughout his university ca-reer, Coach Metras, by all accountsa colorful figure, was a strong in-fluence on Britton. “He was verysound in his football principles,and he took a personal interest inhis players and how they were do-ing in school and life.” Metras hada talent, says Britton, for motivat-ing his players without making bigspeeches. “Every time we stepped

wind felt like a hurricane when youwere running into it, and it felt likenothing when it was behind you.”After he had completed two laps inless than two and half minutes, thecoaches, worried that he would col-lapse, begged him to slow down.

Britton was starter in the CFLfor seven years, and although henever played in a Grey Cup game,his teams did well, posting solidrecords virtually every year. He retired at 29 to focus on his bur-geoning legal career – one of thetoughest decisions he ever made.“I really didn’t want to quit. And Ididn’t realize how much I was go-ing to miss it until it happened.”

Although he thought he wasfinished with football, new oppor-tunities began to crop up. For sev-eral years he did a daily five-minute radio program on football.In 1973, he became a director ofthe Calgary Stampeders, the firstex-player ever honored in this way. He remained on the Board formany years, serving as president

in 1983-84. He was especially hon-ored to be named to the UWOSports Hall of Fame in 1986.

Meanwhile, his career had takenoff. A busy corporate practice fo-cused on financing, acquisitions,dispositions, mergers and majorcontracts led to international workand extensive travel in the MiddleEast and Europe. He became thefirst Managing Partner, then Chair-man of Bennett Jones, the firm hejoined out of law school. He servedin the senior management role un-til 1997. Today, he is a director witha number of companies in Canada,and several in the U.K. and the U.S.He is lead director at ATCO Ltd. andCanadian Utilities Limited.

In 1984 he got an urgent callfrom an Edmonton friend, Pat

When he completed his HBA in1958,Britton had two goals – to com-plete a law degree and to play pro-fessional football. He achieved bothin Vancouver, attending classes dur-ing the day and practicing with theB.C. Lions during the evenings. It wastoughest during the football seasonwhen the team played games acrossCanada. Britton made a point of at-tending all his classes, no matterhow late he had arrived home thenight before, but rarely had time tostudy until the season was over. Healso played rugby for UBC.

While completing his degree, hebegan to look for a law firm to starthis career. He and his wife Linda,who were married while they wereboth attending UBC, decided tomove to Calgary.“In those days, Cal-gary was still a small city but it hadmore head offices than any city inCanada other than Toronto or Mon-treal,”he explains.“It didn’t have anold boys system, which I liked a lot,

and we seemed to be on the samewavelength as Calgary people.”

But Britton also wanted to playfootball. The Calgary team saidthey would be happy to have him,if a trade could be arranged. It wentright down to the line, but on the second day of training campBritton got a call to tell him that athree-way trade had been made.

Britton vividly remembers hisfirst practice with the Stampeders.Accustomed to running windsprints or quarter miles at fullspeed, he was surprised when thecoach asked him to run a mile inunder six minutes. Eager to make agood impression, he took offaround the track. “It was the firstmile I’d ever run in my life. It was awindy day and I remember that the

“Football gives you discipline. Youlearn to take care of everything youneed to be at the top of your game.We had a pretty successful squad atWestern, and we all knew it took hardwork.That carries over into business.

“One thing you learn as part of ateam is that you can’t make assump-tions about anybody. You have tokeep an open mind, and realize thatthe people you’re working with, orworking against, are all different.You have to be sure you don’t classi-fy people before you really under-stand what they’re all about.

“Sure, I miss football – but I don’tmiss having a sore body ever day ofthe year! It helps that I deal with alot of competition in my job. Somepeople say it’s stressful, but I enjoyit because of the competition. Thething I miss most about football isjust hanging out with the guys, butthis also a business where youdevelop strong relationships.

It was a great time of my life. I hadlots of fun and the guys I playedwith were great guys. I still keep intouch with some of them. I wouldn’tchange anything.”

In Britton’s experience, sport isoften a microcosm of life.“Footballrequires a lot of effort and disci-pline,” he says.“You have to stretch,strain and strive to achieve. It re-quires fully functional teamwork,a clear plan of how you are goingto win and flawless execution. Ifyou go as hard as you can, the re-sults are remarkable and probablyfar beyond what you thought pos-sible. All of that is true of businessand other aspects of life, too.”

Success in sport, as in business,relies on setting goals and keep-ing them clearly within yoursights, Britton says. With only 16games in the CFL season, each onewas crucial. Both short and longerterm goals were always clearly de-fined and sharply focused. “To me,that’s a formula for achievementas you live your life,” he says. He al-so says it’s important to be men-tally, spiritually, emotionally andphysically balanced. “If you ignoreor over-emphasize any of these el-ements, you’ll be out of balance.”

Britton and his wife have twosons and three daughters, allmarried and living close at handin Calgary. Britton coached bothsons when they played football asboys. All of the children ski racedover a 16-year period. Among themthey also competed in track andfield, soccer, water sports, triathlonsand equestrian show jumping.Sons Chris and Dan now operateChariot Carriers, a company thatmanufacturers child carriers sold inCanada, the U.S. and Europe.

Britton himself shows no signs ofslowing down, although he says hewill retire from the law by age 70.“Ithink there’ll be a lot of other thingsto do after that,” he says. Certainly,there will always be the joy ofwatching a good football game. ■

KIRSTEN FELDMAN

Kirsten Feldman, MBA ’84, was acompetitive swimmer from the ageof 8 to 20. She switched to rowing,and by the time she came to Ivey, shehad already won the Canadian light-weight championships in pairs, foursand eights. Today, she is an AdvisoryDirector with Morgan Stanley DeanWitter in New York. She has two chil-dren, three and six, and she recentlycompleted her first triathlon.

“One thing I enjoyed about rowingis that it’s a team sport, whereasswimming is an individual sport.When you’re rowing in an eight,you’ve got eight people who reallyhave to work in synchrony together.I think that’s helpful with school,and it’s certainly helpful later in life.

“When you’re one of hundreds ofapplicants, it’s good to be able topoint to something where you’vedemonstrated hard work, competi-tion, discipline and high achieve-ment, and had experience withteamwork. When I was being inter-viewed at Morgan Stanley, theyasked me how I coped with compe-tition. Basically, my answer was,‘I’ve been competing all my life.’That was good enough for them.

“As a varsity athlete, you learn timemanagement skills that are useful inyour career. And of course, you learndiscipline. It really takes discipline toget out of bed in the dark everymorning and get out on the lake!

“ A certain amount of sacrificecomes with being a competitive ath-lete, but I wouldn’t change what Idid. The lesson I learned is that if youwork hard and stick with something,you can be successful. That lessonjust translates into the rest of life.”

KENT THEXTON

Kent Thexton,MBA ’89,was recentlyinducted into the W Club Hall of Fame.He counts the CIAU 1500 champi-onship, the Cross-country CIAU teamgold and running the four-minute mileas his top athletic achievements.Today,he is Chief Data and Marketing Officerfor BT Wireless and lives in Englandwith his wife and two children.Thex-ton often gets up at 5 a.m. to run fivemiles before going to work.

“When you’re running competitively,it’s completely you – how well youperform, how deep you dig, howmuch pain you’re wiling to gothrough. When I started running inhigh school, my marks went fromthe mid-80s to the mid-90s, becauseI had learned how to focus.”

“You only achieve in sport as much asyou put into it – how hard you work intraining is ultimately how well you’regoing to be able to perform.Then,there’s also the day itself,when youhave to be able to bring your bestgame to it. In translating that to thework environment, I really learned howto discipline myself, to work hard, to setgoals and deliver on them, to pushmyself. I also learned how to prioritizethings and get the important thingsdone.The big moments in businessaren’t as intense as the big momentsin sports,but when you’re making apresentation to the board or a majorcustomer presentation – that’s whenyou need to have your best game.

“Competitive sport affected me verymuch in terms of who I am today. Iremember those times with great joy.”

She went into the program expecting to focus on interna-tional strategy, but soon becamefascinated by issues of consumerbehavior. Cotte’s doctoral disser-tation focused on how womenallocate time between leisureand work, and how they chooseto spend their leisure t ime.During her research, however,it was the subjects’ perceptions o f t i m e a n d“ t i m e s t y l e s ”that caught herattention. Thatled to a num-b e r o f o t h e rstudies lookingat the influenceof t ime styles on how peopleshop, how theywork togetherand how theyperceive work.

Although timestyles remain apowerful interest for Cotte, sheis also exploring other topics.One stream of research looks athow family influences, both genetic and environmental, cre-ate consumer behavior. A thirdstream is focused on emotional

JUNE COTTETime is of the essence for JuneCotte. The marketing professorwho recently joined Ivey from theUniversity of South Carolina is interested in how consumers andbusiness people perceive and re-spond to time. One of Cotte’s keyfindings is that when an individ-ual’s time style is different fromthat of the group, the gap cancause unhappiness and dissatis-faction with work.

Cotte grew up in Winnipeg,completed an undergraduate de-gree at Brock University in St.Catharine’s, then took a job withUnion Gas in southwestern On-tario. While working in the Mar-keting Research department andstudying for her MBA on a part-time basis at the University ofWindsor, she discovered a pas-sion for research. “When you doresearch for a company, thequestions you look at tend to be fairly similar,” she says. “Ithought if I became an academ-ic, I could research any question Iwanted.” In January 1994, shestarted her PhD at the Universityof Connecticut.

After five years, Thornhill madeanother decision – to move fromAtlantic Canada to British Colum-bia and study for an MBA. Thistime, his part-time jobs were inteaching, as a GMAT preparationinstructor and as a teaching as-sistant in undergraduate financecourses. He discovered that heenjoyed teaching and had a tal-ent for it, so he began thinkingabout an academic career.

Before starting his PhD, Thorn-hill took two years off. He moved

to Japan where he taught Eng-lish and pursued his love ofkarate. “It’s like going to golfcamp with Tiger Woods and

David Duval,”he says, “That’swhere the besti n t h e w o r l da r e , a n d t h i sw a s a r e a l l ygreat opportu-n i t y t o t r a i nwith them.”

Returning toUBC, Thornhillspent the nextfour years work-ing with RaffiA m i t , o n e o fCa n a d a ’s t o p

entrepreneurship scholars. Thorn-hill’s interest in entrepreneurshipwent back to his experience as a “spectacularly unsuccessful”small business owner. Whileworking as an engineer, he start-ed a company doing sales andmanufacturing for tourist festi-vals in Atlantic Canada. In twoyears, the company barely brokeeven. “That experience taught mehow little I know about business.I didn’t know how to do finan-cials, I didn’t know marketing. I

Cotte is thr i l led with hernew academic home. “Ivey is afamily place,” she says. “Com-ing here doesn’t feel like takinga job; it feels l ike joining agroup. People are just genuine-ly nice.” Ivey is a family place inanother sense, too. Within twoweeks of her arrival, Cotte dis-covered that she was pregnant.Her baby is due in early March.She says her colleagues havebeen very supportive, offeringto help with her courses whileshe is away.

Cotte and her husband are enthusiastic whitewater kayakersand cyclers. She explains: “Weboth love to cook and we bothlove to eat. That’s why it’s a goodidea to do something active!”

Thornhill fi-nanced his un-dergraduate ed-ucation in me-chanical engi-neering at theU n i v e r s i t y o fNew Brunswick by doing newsand sports reporting on radio,first for private stations and lat-er for the CBC. As his degreec a m e t o a c l o s e , h e h a d t ochoose between a career in en-gineering or in broadcast jour-nalism. “I was competing withguys l ike Ian who had hugeamounts of talent, and I real-ized I was probably a better en-gineer than I was a broadcast-er.” Thornhill accepted a jobwith Michelin Tires.

knew a ton about making tires,but almost nothing about mak-ing money.”

In his thesis research, Thornhilllooked at what leads entrepre-neurs to start their businesses,and once they’re started, whathelps them survive. “One of thethings we’ve found,” he says,“is that it just takes one gap inknowledge for a company to fail.So you may know everythingabout marketing, but if you don’trely on an accountant and a

lawyer, and draw on other areasof expertise, you’re not going tomake it. Trying to run a businesson just one narrow area of exper-tise is a recipe for disaster.”

Thornhill is now working on aproject involving a group of com-panies in Vancouver that have re-cently taken on capital to helpthem grow. He will track themover time, looking at why theywant to grow, how much theywant to grow and how their com-panies fare. He is also a researchfellow with Statistics Canada andis working on several projectsbased on large-scale data sets col-lected by the federal agency.

Thornhill loves teaching andespecially relishes the unpre-dictability of an Ivey classroom.“I go into class with a lesson planand an idea of where the case isgoing to go, but it hardly evergoes there. I have a lot of fun because I learn as much, if notmore, as the students, just byhearing their insights.”

Although karate remains an in-terest, Thornhill is now a dedicat-ed triathlete, and much of hisspare time is spent training. Hesays that long-distance swim-ming, running and biking help

crises ranging from plant explo-sions to product tampering andexecutive kidnapping.

One focus of the Center’s workwas identify-ing early indi-cators of po-tential crises.While study-ing the issue ofworkplace vio-lence, Pearsonbegan to ex-plore incivilityand aggressionas a star tingpoint for moreextreme behav-ior. The worki m m e d i at e l ystruck a chordw i t h m e d i aand the public.Pearson foundthat men are just as likely aswomen to see themselves as vic-tims of workplace incivility, al-though men are much more like-ly to be instigators. Perhaps hermost important finding is thatpeople on the receiving end of in-civility are more likely to taketime off, not work as hard, orleave their jobs. An importantstep, she says, is for companiesto set a base line for behavior. “It

may simply be one sentence inthe mission statement that says‘we expect people to treat eachother with respect.’”

Pearson moved from the Uni-versity of Southern California tothe University of North Carolinain 1983, attracted by a more tra-ditional faculty role with moreteaching. As a teacher, Pearson be-lieves strongly in giving students

him think more clearly. “I’m justmore effective if I exercise everyday,” he says. “I sleep better, Iwork better, I manage the stress.It’s when I’m training that I do alot of my best thinking.”

CHRISTINE PEARSON As an expert on organizationalcrisis management, Chris Pearsonhas nothing but praise for theway that companies and govern-ments dealt with the terrorist at-tacks of September 11.

“With first response, you needto care about the people who areworking for your organization,”she says. “From what I saw onCNN, companies did very wellwith that. In fact, I think the cityof New York and the nationalgovernment also did good mod-eling in that regard.”

Pearson traces her interestin crisis management back to atime when she was five or six.She remembers her father, whoworked for an airline, cominghome one night after an accidentat his station. It was many yearslater, after completing her BA atCity University of New York, livingfor two years in Guam with herNavy pilot husband, and havingtwo sons, that she began to pur-sue her interest.

After a Masters degree at Cali-fornia State University, she en-rolled in the doctoral program atthe University of Southern Cali-fornia. There she helped startup the Center for Crisis Manage-ment, housed in the businessschool. The Center worked withFortune 100 companies and somepublic sector organizations to de-velop better ways to deal with

practical skills and knowledge,helping them see situationsfrom new angles and honoringmultiple perspectives within the

classroom. She is already veryi m p r e s s e d b ythe diversity andquality of Iveystudents. “Thestudents here arevery smart andvery thoughtful.They have a won-derful variance inskills, expertiseand experiences.When you’re try-ing to push onthe side of cre-ative thinking, itworks really wellto have diversity.”

Pearson waslured to Ivey by the opportunityto internationalize her researchin crisis management, usingIvey’s strong links to Asia andother parts of the world. Sheplans to begin interviewing senior executives in Canadian-based companies about their cri-sis management programs andhow globalization affects them,and see where the work leads.“What really intrigues me is howyou determine what the stan-dard for crisis management willbe as you move across differentborders around the world, andhow you weigh the potential riskagainst the cost.” She also likesIvey’s emphasis on pragmatic ap-plied research. “The ultimate testfor me is if what I’m doing con-nects for people who are out inorganizations.”

Pearson and her husband havemoved into a 103-year-old housein London and are in the processof renovating. Their two sonswork in the U.S., Jim in a Califor-nia computer hardware devel-opment company, and John witha North Carolina sports distribu-tion firm. ■

At the moment, the retired pro-fessors share a single over-crowdedoffice. The new lounge will includea comfortable and attractive sit-ting area overlooking UniversityCollege hill and six well-equippedworkstations. The Kuhlmann giftwill also pay for ongoing operationof the new space, ensuring that re-tired faculty members have easyaccess to business services such asphone, e-mail and faxing.

Professor emeritus John Grahamsays the lounge will help maintainthe continuity of the School.“A placelike this makes it attractive to cometo the School,” he says. “Without aspace to work, it would be easy tofeel like an outsider.” Bud Johnston,also a retired faculty member who isremembered as one of Ivey’s mostcolorful deans, agrees. “It’s impor-tant to maintain contact with oursenior people, to perpetuate the val-ues that this School was built on.”

Rather than naming the loungefor himself or his company,Kuhlmannhas asked that it be named in honorof Mike Leenders,a long-time facultymember who is due to retire nextyear. Leenders taught Kuhlmannwhen he was a student and theyhave stayed in touch over the years.Leenders now serves on the board ofING Canada.“Michiel has served theSchool with great dedication for avery long time,” said Kuhlmann.“Hehas demonstrated the best valuesthat faculty and students can carryforward. He is an exemplar of themany professors who have made

At Ivey there’s a fo-cus on recruiting outstanding youngfaculty members. But what aboutthe retirees – are they disappearing,taking with them their experience,expertise and enthusiasm?

Not if Arkadi Kuhlmann has any-thing to say about it. Kuhlmann isPresident and CEO of ING Bank in theU.S.and a member of the Ivey AdvisoryBoard.In early October,he announceda gift to the Ivey Business School to create a special lounge and work-space for retired faculty members.Thelounge will be part of the LawrenceNational Centre for Policy and Man-agement, an addition to the Schoolthat is currently under construction.

“It’s a place where retired facultymembers can work, have meetings,connect with other faculty,and talk toalumni and students,”Kuhlmann ex-plains. “It will send a very clear mes-sage that our professors are and willcontinue to be highly valued at Ivey.”

In the past five years, more than20 faculty members have retired, in-cluding Bud Johnston, Adrian Ryans,Peter Newson, Al Mikalachki, DonThain and Ross Archibald.“These arepeople who have dedicated theirlives to building Ivey to the greatschool it is today,” said Dean LarryTapp in announcing the gift. “Bytheir commitment and hard workthey have put Ivey on the map.”

At the announcement, Leenderswas clearly moved by the tribute. “Ihave always been amazed by ourgraduates in terms of what they’reable to accomplish in the world, andArkadi is no exception,” he said.“As afaculty member, all I’ve done is try todo my best and hope like hell that mystudents will forgive me my sins andrecognize some of the better parts!”

Leenders completed his MBA atIvey in 1959,then went on to completea PhD at Harvard.A leading researcherand teacher in the field of purchasingmanagement, he forged a strong linkwith the Canadian Purchasing Man-agers’Association – a connection thatled to the creation of the PMAC Chairin Purchasing Management in 1993and the Ivey/PMAC Purchasing Indexin 2000. He is also an acknowledgedexpert on the case teaching methodand with his partner Jim Erskine, hasconducted workshops in more than30 countries around the world.He co-authored three books, focusing oncase writing, teaching and learning,with Erskine and Leenders’wife,LouiseMaufette-Leenders.

Both Graham and Johnston aredelighted with the naming. “This is a marvelous gesture on Arkadi’spart,” says Graham. “Mike has doneso much for the School, and workedso hard. He has helped to put Iveyfront and centre around the world.”■

other. Friends and families camecloser together. And everywhere,throughout the world, thoughtsand hearts united.

The world changed on thatday. It is now, sadly, without thepresence of all those preciouspeople who did not survive,including our fellow alum KenBasnicki. For a time, it is with-out our carefree and unworriedexistence and our optimisticspirit. More than ever, it is with-out peace.

B u t S e p t e m b e r 1 1 t h a l s oserved as a catalyst. It brought

out the collectivepower of humani-ty. It summonedthe best and bright-est par t of our-selves. It taughtus that we are ca-pable of settingaside our hatredand contempt, ouranger, and envy,and resentment.We a r e a b l e t odo without keep-ing score , with-out weighing bal-ances, and with-o u t h o l d i n g o n

to petty grievances and grudges.We can let go of bitterness and regret.

The world needs the positivepower of September 11th tolinger and grow. For each of us,the real effort begins by look-ing inside. Examining our ownmotives, our own hearts. Mak-ing small, daily, deliberate choic-es that can – and will – elimi-nate the climate that fostershatred and intolerance.

We have it in us. September11th, and the days that followed,proved it.

same direction. Bellowing smokeand flames rose high into thesky. Debris could be seen fallingfrom the towers. Almost every-one watched in quiet horror. Therest wept.

We returned to the office justin time to hear that the Pentagonhad been hit by a third plane.After that , the South Tower collapsed, then the North Tower.Each new event accosted us before we’d even had a chance toassimilate the previous piece of information.

It was time toleave the building.T h e ra d i o s , n o wblaring from everycorner of the office,informed us thatthe subways, trains,bridges and tun-nels had all beenshut down. Know-i n g t h a t m a n y of our colleagueswould be stranded,those of us living in Manhattan invit-ed the rest to ourhomes. The streetswere so crowdedwith the tens of thousands of uswalking north from lower Man-hattan that emergency vehiclescould barely move toward thesite of the devastation. Strangely,above the din of the blaringsirens, not much else could beheard. Massive crowds walkedsilently, all of us numb and inshock. Here and there, some-one hurried by, completely cov-ered in ash.

Over the next few days, theutter grief over the tragedystruck as the reality of all thatwas lost set in. But another, al-most ethereal, phenomenon oc-curred. The impatience of NewYork City was stilled; people be-came vis ibly more tolerant,more thoughtful, more giving,and more loving toward one an-

Someone sug-gested that perhaps a cannonof flyers from the New Yorkmayoralty race were being dis-tributed. Then people said theWTC was on fire and I went tot h e w i n d o w f a c i n g w e s t . Iwatched for five minutes or soa n d s a w s o m e p e o p l e w h owere forced to jump from thetop floors of the first tower. (Ibelieve that your body forcesyou away from fire: it is a phys-ical reaction, not a decision.)

My boss cancelled the presen-tation. I had just picked up mybag to leave when I heard an-other boom, felt some impactand saw a flash of fire. Peoplew e r e r u n n i n g a w a y f r o m the west-facing window andscreaming. Thinking it was abomb and not knowing if it wasour building or another (it wasthat loud), I yelled at people nearme, maybe 50 or so, to exit downthe stairs. I went with this groupdown 60 flights of stairs. We wereall nervous, but several of us en-couraged people not to push, tokeep calm and to help others. Wemade good time and exited thebuilding in 10 minutes.

When I got to the lobby, Iwas shocked by the sight ofthousands of people gawkingat the WTC in the open plaza. Idid not consider that a build-ing might collapse, but my sur-v ival inst inc ts and mi l i tar ytraining told me that whenthings are blowing up in tallbuildings, it’s a good idea toget away from tall buildings. perfect day. I looked north tothe WTC and saw just one tower.At certain angles, one towerblocks the oth-er (you saw thison news foot-a g e ) s o I a s -sumed that wasthe angle I wasat. Ten secondsw e n t b y a n dt h e r e w a s n o other tower. Itu r n e d t o t h eg u y n e x t t o m e and asked“Where d i d i tgo?” and he just said “It’s gone.”

I was in a state of shockeddisbelief as the ferry went bythe WTC, perhaps half a mileaway from the damage. We sawwhat looked to me to be about20 floors left standing of thesouth tower while the northtower continued to burn. Wesaw another 6 to 8 people jumpfrom the north tower as theferry headed for New Jersey. Itfirst stopped at Port Liberty,right across the Hudson fromthe WTC. I got off and assumedthat I could hitch a ride withsomeone heading west boundin order to get home. As I wasleaving the ferry, the nor tht o w e r c a m e d o w n i n a b o u t10 seconds – straight down. Ihadn’t expected that, even thoughthe first one had collapsed.

I hitched a ride with a mancal led Er ic (who I hai led in the parking lot) and we l is-tened to the radio as our moodchanged. We were now becom-ing curious about what hadhappened and why, and start-ing to worry about our friends(and Eric about his family – hissister worked in WTC – I neverfound out if she was safe). Theradio described what was hap-pening at the Pentagon andthe fact that all planes in U.S.were being grounded (were we under attack elsewhere?). I

colleague, Brigid, came eastwith me about three blocksand we stepped into a deli tograb a water and decide whatto do. I wanted to get a call to[his wife] Rebecca, but cel lphones were jammed. Brigidand I discussed getting outof Manhattan and we agreedshe would walk on the Brook-lyn Bridge to her apartmentand I would try to take the ferry from Pier 11 (lower south-east of Manhattan).

I walked toward Pier 11 andwas on the dock when anotherhuge explosion occurred and a grey and black cloud came to-ward us. I ran to the end of thedock with about 50 other peo-ple, not knowing what hap-pened. I thought another build-ing much closer to us (maybe the Stock Exchange) had beenbombed. (From where I was atthis point, the view of the WTC is blocked by other buildings.)Just then, a ferry pulled in andwe all got on (no matter where itwas going) and pulled into theEast River just as the cloud en-veloped the boat. The mood wassomber and scared. You couldnot see more than 10 to 15 feetoff the boat and it seemed silent(although it was not). Peopleheld handkerchiefs and Kleenexover their noses and mouthsand we got covered in a film ofdust and ash. I spoke to a manwho was walking on Broadwaywhen the first plane hit and hesaw body parts on the side-walk. He seemed to know thatplanes had crashed into theWTC, which was the first time Iunderstood that it was not abomb. We sat quietly as the fer-ry seemed to drift in this fogand it's hard to put into wordsour state of mind.

After 10 to 12 minutes of go-ing through this mist and notk n o w i n g w h a t wa s co m i n gnext, the ferry emerged into thesunshine and blue skies of a

I went over to see Ground Zero about a week after the in-cident, just to try to under-stand the impact of the void.It was a weird feeling becauseit was so changed. It was likeg o i n g b a c k t o a p l a c e y o u remember 30 years ago andf i n d i n g t h at t h e l a n d s c a p e has changed.

Except for the skyline, onthe ferry all now seems nor-mal. Rounding the southern tip of the Island, your eyes areautomatical ly drawn to thespot where the WTC used tobe. The void is immense andthe sense of the loss – of al a n d m a r k , a s y m b o l o f t h estrength of New York, and ofh u m a n l i fe – co m e s at yo uagain. The other night, f ivey o u n g b u s i n e s s m e n w e r edrinking beers in paper bagsand having a grand time onthe ferry. At first, it seemed soinappropriate. But people arereturning to normal and as I t h o u g h t a b o u t i t , p e o p l elaughing and having a goodtime did not offend me as itdid minutes before. ■

MONA ATTARD, MBA ‘91That day, I started work the wayI normally start it. Sipping a cof-fee I’d picked up on the way, Ichecked e-mail and voice mail,deciding what needed my at-tention sooner rather than later.A few of my colleagues had al-ready arrived; others were trick-ling in. No-one in a particularhurry to tackle yet another dayof the project we’ve laboredover for the past two years. Andno one – not among our group,or anywhere else in New YorkCity that morning – was evenvaguely aware that only a fewminutes remained of the worldas we knew it. That sounds dra-matic as I write it, but what fol-lowed was, in fact, the mostawesome event in my lifetime.

A phone rang. “Hello? Yes…What?!! OH MY GOD! You’rek i d d i n g ! ” M y c o l l e a g u es l a m m e d t h e p h o n e d o w n ,sprang to his feet and shouted,“A plane has hit the World TradeCenter!” More exclamations. Ithought, “It’s probably a smallplane that somehow wanderedtoo far off course.” A few people

headed immediately outside tosee what happened. The twintowers were visible from thepark a block west of us. I stayedat my desk, having no morbidcuriosity or need to witness the“accident” at this point. I did,however, dial in to the Internetand star ted searching for anews web site that carried thestory. Minutes later, another col-l e a g u e w h o ’d b e e n o n t h ephone yelled out, “A secondplane has hit the other tower!”Now, disbelief reigned, and for a

few moments, people were toodumbstruck for exclamations.Slowly, painfully, the terrifyingrealization that we were beingattacked seeped into our con-sciousness. Finally, the wordswere uttered.

The next horrifying hour un-folded in a blur. I needed to gooutside now and see for myself.Three of us half walked, half ranto the park. Already, a largecrowd had gathered there, andeveryone gazed in the exact
