“Rest is not idleness,” said John Lubbock,

“and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day

listening to the murmur of water or watching the

clouds float across the sky is hardly a waste of time.”

Most of us need more, not less, rest

built into our daily routine.

Only when we are quiet can we hear God’s whisper.

Summer is a great time to find a peaceful, outdoor

spot to read, rest and pray -

even if only for a few minutes.

God is eagerly waiting for us to make space for him.

Participants will gather at the Mountain View - McGaheysville Church of the

Brethren at 9:30 am or 1:00 pm and then head down to the river. Brethren

Woods staff, including a certified lifeguard, will provide a brief orientation to

stretch of river from Power Dam to Island Ford. We’ll return to the church about 12:00 pm or

3:30 pm to head for home. The cost is just $15 and includes your transportation, certified staff

leadership, innertube, lifejacket, and some additional; gear. Registration forms and more

information are available online or by contacting the camp office. Registrations are due by

Bridgewater Home Auxiliary for the Fall Festival Silent Auction.

The auxiliary is most grateful for Glenn and his incredibly generous donation.

Sadly, this is the last year Glenn is able to donate.

Please contact Ellie Draper in Volunteer Services at 828-2682 if you, your Sunday School class, or a group

of friends would like to fill one of the baskets or help in any other way with Fall Festival.

Also, if you know anyone cleaning out closets, kitchen cabinets, linen

drawers, or downsizing, remind them that the

Bridgewater Home ReRun Shoppe is ALWAYS looking for donations!

Residents at Bridgewater Retirement Community traditionally enjoy a Sunday evening worship service, Vespers.

This service is only possible because of volunteers (speakers, musicians, escorts). Many of you have given of your

time and gifts to help with Vespers and once again we are asking for your help:

First: If you know of any musical talents (individuals or groups) who might be willing to come and share on

a Sunday evening, please let me know.

Second and most urgently, through the middle of September, we need volunteers to escort residents

to and from the chapel for our service. We have one youth group from H'burg COB who provides

this ministry on the first Sundays of the month during the summer. We also have a group

coming from Luray COB on August 12th. Do you have a youth group, Sunday School class, women's

or men's group that could help one Sunday evening

August 19, August 26, September 9 or September 16?

This involves about an hour and a half, 6:15-7:45. This is an outreach opportunity right at your fingertips.

Thanks, Deb Huffman, Chaplain (540) 830-0032

On Earth Peace announces its sixth annual Peace Day (formerly referred to as

International Day of Prayer for Peace): Praying for Ceasefire, September 21, 2012.

What could a real ceasefire look like where you are? What ceasefire do you pray for?

It could mean not one incident of domestic violence. An end to bullying. No more

shootings. A time to pray for restored relationships or new relationships to be formed

across walls that divide. A time to declare that all the wars are over and to call for our

young men and women to come home. A pause to seek, asking God for vision for a new path.

Church of the Brethren Annual Conference – In Brief

The Church of the Brethren Annual Conference, meeting at America’s Center in St. Louis , MO

July 7-11, 2012 adopted the following new vision statement for the denomination until 2020:

Through Scripture, Jesus calls us to live as courageous disciples by word and action:

To surrender ourselves to God,

To embrace one another,

To express God’s love for all creation.

The Annual Conference also elected Nancy Sollenberger Heishman of Tipp City, Ohio, as

moderator-elect. Jim Beckwith former pastor at Montezuma and now in Pennsylvania, was

elected conference secretary to succeed Fred Swartz of Bridgewater. Bernie Fuska, pastor of the

Timberville Church of the Brethren, was elected to the Pastoral Compensation and Benefits

Advisory Committee.

Attendance: 2,341 including 731 delegates

If you saw the Church of the Brethren live report at Annual Conference on July 8, or on the

webcast at www.brethren.org/ac , you might remember hearing this challenge:

“Consider engaging in a week of service each year, and a year of service in your lifetime.”

That’s a hefty goal, but if you’re feeling inspired to give it a try, check out a new webpage at

brethren.org that is completely dedicated to volunteer opportunities. You can search for your

perfect ministry match by program, age, or length of time.

Take a look at www.brethren.org/volunteer !

I you missed the live report but would like to watch it, as well as other sessions from Annual

Conference, visit www.brethren.org/video .
