10:45 Break

11:00 Literacy

We are going to start a new unit in Talk for Writing. You are going to be learning how to write a ‘wishing tale’ I will be referring to our story called ‘The King of the Fishes’ There will be a resource pack to go with the literacy lessons this half term. Read and complete pages 3-6 You don’t need to print – you can just do the answers in your book. It might be useful to copy the story out so you can learn it off by heart like we do in class!

Today you will be investigating vocabulary. Complete pages 7-9 Challenge – Can you think of any other synonyms for the words that you have learnt?

IXL – spend an hour on Literacy activities.

Let’s see how much of the story you understand. Complete the questions on page 10. You don’t need to print – just copy the answers into your books.

Think back to when we have literacy lessons in school. Spend today making your own story map to go with ‘The King of the Fishes’ (starting on page 3). Can you come up with actions to go with the story as you tell it.? Remember not to use too many actions for each sentence and don’t forget the expression too. Practise, practise, practice. Can you remember the whole story and perform it to your family? Practise this lots over the next few weeks. You could even get your family to record you and send it in for us to see.

12:00 Lunch

1:00 IXL Maths

Spend half an hour on IXL – focus on division and multiplication question types.

1:30 Spelling & Handwriting

Spelling rule: Suffix-cian/-tion/-sion. What do these words mean? Can you identify the root words? Can you use all of your spelling words in a story? electrician/magician/musician/politician/mathematician/expansion/tension/extension/comprehension/invention/attention

2:00 Topic

Our new topic for this half term is ‘Rise and Shine’ and we will be learning all about light and dark. Science Begin by making a mind map about everything you already know about why we have light and dark. What is light and dark? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zr8thbk Follow the link above and start to find out more – watch the videos and follow the activities. Answer the following questions in your books: What is light? What are sources of light? Then complete the worksheet – Different Sources of Light – in the resources below.

Science Using what you learnt yesterday, do some extra reading on DK Find Out ( https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/science/light/ ), create your own glossary of key vocabulary – draw pictures and write definitions to go with the words – include opaque, transparent, reflective, shadow, natural/artificial source of light, shiny, mirror, reflection, sunlight. Please continue to add to this glossary as you learn more over the next few weeks. You could make it in a little book or as a large poster – make sure you get all the spellings correct too.

RE What is a miracle? How many miracles can you think of from the Bible? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z3fdwmn Watch the clip or read the story in the bible if you have one - Matthew 14:13-21. What do you think about

this miracle? How do you think this

miracle happened? Do you think that it

happened exactly as it is told in the Bible?

If not, what might have been different and what do you think would have been the same?

What is the lesson from this miracle?

What was Jesus showing and teaching by performing this miracle?

What does this miracle teach about God?

Answer in your books.

Science What happens when light shines on a shiny mirror? Have a look around the house for different types of materials e.g. dark/light fabric, metal spoon, white paper, plastic, mirror, glass. Create a table in your books and write the name of each material in one column. Then turn off the lights (try to make the room as dark as possible) and observe what you notice when you shine a light on each material. Write down your observations in the next column.

Material Observation

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zs3ygk7 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/ztcg9j6 Write an explanation in your book about how you can keep safe when it is dark outside - which materials are the best to wear? What is reflection? Make sure you use the science to explain your ideas. REMEMBER my favourite word = because!!!

Science Is it safe to look directly at the sun? How can you protect yourself from the sunlight? What job do sunglasses do? Create a poster to warn people about the effects of looking at the sun and give them some top tips on how to protect yourself.

3:00 Reading Enjoy reading a story and make comments in your reading record using your DR sentence stems!

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ Summer Term Week 4 Lesson 4 – Area – counting squares

Find a dice. Roll the dice 4 times and make the largest number you can with the four digits. Repeat and find the smallest number you can. Next add these together and then find the difference between them. You could also do this by turning over the number from Ace(0)-9 on a pack of cards. Make as many calculations as you can. Challenge: create a 2-digit number and divide by a 1-digit number.

11:00 Literacy

Today, you are going to be looking at adding more description by adding relative clauses to expanded noun phrases. Look carefully at the examples on page 12 and try some of your own. Complete page 12. Challenge – look around the room you are in – find 3

You have done lots of work on understanding what ‘fronted adverbials’ are this year. Can you use what you have learnt to help you to complete page 13?

IXL – spend an hour on Literacy activities.

Read pages 14 and 15. Make sure you understand how the story has been boxed up – like we usually do in class. Then start getting creative with your species. You may like to build on the species that you designed last half term.

Read the story plans on pages 16 and 17. How confident are you feeling with this story type? Get creative and plan your own story on page 18. You don’t need to do it on the sheet but make sure your story parts are clear in your plan. Remember you can plan using pictures!

objects that you can describe in the same way. This really helps to give your reader more details which helps them to create clearer pictures in their minds.

Challenge: add a list of nouns in each story section of things that you can describe in the same way as you did on Monday.

12:00 Lunch

1:00 IXL Maths Spend half an hour on IXL – focus on area and perimeter questions.

1:30 Spelling & Handwriting

Spelling: These words are from the word list for Year 4 - focus on these tricky words this week. Can you use all of your spelling words in a story? 2:00 Topic

History

What would the world be like without any lights?

Think about all the things you do in the day that involves being able to see. Write a diary entry that shares what a ‘day in the life’ of you would look like if you had no light?

Then design a poster that celebrates everything we can now do because of the lightbulb e.g. playing football in the winter in the evenings, reading at night, reduced fire risk from candles…

History How did human make light before we had electricity? Answer in your book. Read the information on ‘The historic race to make a better bulb’ in the resources below and then fill in the timeline or draw one in your books. Who invented the lightbulb? Find out as much as you can about this and create a biography about them. When? How? https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/science/famous-scientists/thomas-edison/ Challenge – can you remember when the Egyptians/Kingdom of Benin/Stone Age/Bronze Age/Iron Age were? – What sort of light sources would they have used?

RE What are your opinions on miracles? Do you believe they are real? Do they still occur today? Read Jesus Turns Water Into Wine - John 2:1-11. Or watch it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaWI4-n0z_0 What is the lesson from

this miracle? What was Jesus showing

and teaching by performing this miracle?

What does this miracle teach about God?

Answer these questions in your books. What do Christians believe about miracles? Why and how do they believe they happen?

Science Make a Shadow Clock At 9 am: Get a piece of paper and put in in front of a window. Place a stick or other simple object on the paper – and draw around the shadow that you see. Return to the paper every hour and draw around the shadow each time. TOP TIPS:

Remember not to have any other light sources in the room (turn off any other lights)

Remember to label each shadow with the time

This is also great to do outside on the concrete if you have the space to do it with chalk

Watch how it changes and moves. Why do you think the shadow changes throughout the day? Now watch the videos in the links below:

Computing How do we get computers to do what we want? https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4gsy9q Watch the videos and read about the answer to this question. Then have a go at completing the suggested activities on the link above. You will find 2 of the resource sheets on the Year 4 class pages on our website.

Pages 19-22. Take your time to read through a section at a time over the next 2 days and draft your own story. I’d like you to complete Sections 1,2 and 3 today. Remember to always go back and check every sentence.

Focus on 4, 5 and the final section. Remember to check all of your punctuation for any speech or fronted adverbial. Have you used any relative clauses like the ones you learnt about on Monday last week?

IXL – spend an hour on Literacy activities.

Read pages 23 and 24 (or follow the link provided) and try to make your own book to publish your story in. Copy your story in your neatest cursive script. Remember to leave the front and back pages blank – this is for your cover design.

Finish creating your little books. Design the front cover and add in some story illustrations. I can’t wait to see these so I’d love to see some photos if you can send them in. Challenge: Can you add a blurb? Look at the covers of some of the books you have at home. Can you design your own!

RE We are going to think about another one of Jesus’ miracles today. Watch the clip below and think about the following questions: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01108lf What is the lesson from

this miracle? What was Jesus showing

and teaching by performing this miracle?

What does this miracle teach about God?

Christians believe it reminds us about the ‘storms’ in life and how we can trust God to be the guide through our ‘storms’ and to bring calmness to our life. Can anyone perform miracles? Are there any modern day miracles that you have heard of? Can you think of any miracles from other faiths? Research the miracles that have been performed in other faiths and record. e.g. Jewish story behind Hanukkah, the miracle of having a baby, doctors helping someone to get better. Using your research create your own artwork that shows one of these miracles. You

Complete the suggested activities – The ‘What’s the time?’ sheet is in the resource section below.

Art/DT and Science Make your own Shadow Puppets Watch the video in the link below: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z87jmp3 Read the instructions in the resources below and make your own puppets. Challenge: can you think of a way to give them moving parts?

Art/DT and Science Make your own Shadow Puppets Write a reflection in your books about your design – what does this teach us about light and shadows? How can you change the sizes of your shadows? What would happen if you used different materials for the puppets e.g. clear plastic?

PSHCE The importance of developing teamwork https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbcthbk Why is it important to work as a team? What qualities do you bring to a team? Follow the lesson on the link above and then fill in the ‘I am amazing’ sheet found on our class pages – if you don’t have a printer, why don’t you design your own version and colour it in? Lamp

Cardboard

Sellotape

Pencil

Scissors

Skewers

White wall

1. Choose what type of puppets you want. How about your favourite animal? Or your friends and family? Or maybe create the characters

from the story you have been writing?

2. Draw outlines for your puppets on the cardboard (e.g. old cereal boxes) and cut them out.

3. Use sellotape to attach a skewer (straw/pencil etc) to the back of each of your puppets.

4. Put the lamp on the floor or on a table. Point it at the wall and turn it on. Turn off other lights and close the curtains.

5. Hold your puppets between the light and the wall. Can you see a shadow on the

wall? Move the puppets between the light and the wall to make the shadow

different sizes. What happens?

Now you have your own puppets, you can make your own play! Film it

You can use your hands as puppets too, just like this picture.

Light travels as a wave. When you put your shadow puppet in between the lamp and

the wall, the puppet blocks some of the light waves.

The closer you put your shadow puppet to the lamp, the more light waves are

blocked. This makes a bigger shadow. Moving the shadow puppet away from the lamp

makes a smaller shadow as fewer light waves are blocked.

Did you know? A lunar eclipse is the Earth casting a shadow on the moon!
