Agenda

• Do Now• Review of one-step• Reciprocals• Practice• Scavenger Hunt• Exit Ticket

Review of One Step

• What is the ultimate goal when solving a one step equation?

• What is an inverse?– What are some inverses in real life?

• What does an inverse inverse operation do?

Page 4: Please Do Now Do Now’s are on the first desk. Grab one before you sit down and start Monday’s row

Reciprocals• We use reciprocals when we multiply and

divide using inverses.• A reciprocal is a multiplicative inverse of a

number…meaning a number times its reciprocal always = 1

• Example:– 2 x ½ = 1– 1/5 x 5 = 1

• How can you write a whole number as a fraction?

Find the Reciprocal

• 8• 1/3• 10• 3/5• 1/9

What does our solution mean?

Let’s look at some word problems!

Page 8: Please Do Now Do Now’s are on the first desk. Grab one before you sit down and start Monday’s row

PracticeThere were 10 cats at the top of the hill and a number at

the bottom leaving 23 cats total. How many were at the bottom?

Solve: 10 + c = 23

There were 120 flowers on the hill but the witches made a number of flowers appear magically leaving 224 flowers. How many flowers did the witches make appear?

Solve: 120 + f = 224

Partners!

• Now you will work with your partner to complete the next 2 problems.

• You should take turns solving and explaining one problem, then switch.

• Make sure you are working together and using your 10 inch voice!

• The crafty witch made 3 brooms per witch giving a total of 18 brooms. How many witches were there? Solve: 3w = 18

• The cats were split into 4 different groups with a total of 24 cats in each group. How many cats were there total? Solve: c / 4 = 24

• There are 20 pumpkins in the grave yard, but a shipment of a number of pumpkins is coming in a few hours to give a total of 34 pumpkins. How many pumpkins were in the shipment? Solve: 20 + p = 34

• There are a number of columns in 2 groups giving 3 in each group. How many columns were there total? Solve: c / 2 = 3

• There are 3 gravestones in the yard for each family in the town giving a total of 33 stones in the yard. How many families were there? Solve : 3 x f = 33

• The house has 10 full windows and a number of broken windows equals 47 windows. How many broken windows are there? Solve: 10 + w = 46

Scavenger Hunt

• There are problems hanging around the room.• Take your activity sheet and start at any

problem. Write down the letter at the bottom of the sheet, write for the problem and your work, and write down your ANSWER to the questions.

• Go find your solution in orange…start again by writing the letter in the next row.

• The first 3 done and correct get a prize!
