Term 2, Week 7 - Wednesday 15 June 2016 Kia ora families Waitākiri Primary School is your school. In the evenings and weekends we love seeing families using the playgrounds, the fields, the alps and scooter tracks, the courts and sandpit. Please do bring your children into the school over the weekend and enjoy our place/your place. Soon the orchard and the vegetable gardens will also be set out so it really will be a lovely place to come for a walk! The hall will be finished at the end of this term and once completed we will have completed the new school building process. The hall will be used during the day by students and in the afternoons the OSCAR Programme will take advantage of the space. During the evenings and weekends the hall will be available for hire. If you know of someone who needs a hall space for sport, exercise etc please contact the office for details. Having visited many schools in New Zealand, Australia, Vancouver and the UAE I can tell you we have an amazing learning environment. Now we get to enjoy working together to make the best of the space for your children. Our teachers are continuing to refine how each studio functions to best meet student needs and are really getting into quality collaborative practice. Your child will be starting to recognise the strengths and interests each teacher has and I know they enjoy the opportunity to learn with a range of teachers and learning assistants. As we get into the cooler months please make sure your child has all their clothing labelled and they come to school with multiple layers on. In the lovely warm studios and as the day warms the children strip off and we now have thousands of dollars of 'lost property'. If your child is missing an article of clothing the lost property is in the CHOICE Room. Have a great week. Kia ora Year 5 & 6 families

Children who participated in the 20/40 hour famine and who have taken home booklets please return your money and booklet by Friday 24 June to the drop box outside office. Even if you didn’t end up collecting any money, your booklet still needs to be returned as all booklets need to be returned to World Vision. Payments can also be paid on line. If this is done, the booklets still must be returned.

Thank you for supporting such a worthwhile cause.

TE REO O TE WIKI Matariki

The pre-dawn rise Matariki, also known as the Seven

Sisters or Pleiades, traditionally signals the Māori New

Year under the maramataka, or lunar calendar. This year it

began on June 6th.

Traditionally, Matariki was both a time to commemorate

those who had passed on, and celebrate a time of plenty

when stores were abundant from horticulture, hunting and

fishing.

For some iwi, Puanga (Rigel), rather than Matariki, is the

signal for the New Year. In the South Island it is Puaka

(which is Puanga in Ngāi Tahu dialect) that heralds the New Year.

Whether you’re celebrating Matariki or Puanga, check out this link to try to find the stars.

ANZ School Banking ANZ School Banking is getting really busy thank you to all our children supporting this every Friday.

For some extra encouragement every Friday when your children bank their name will go into a draw

for a prize pack which will be drawn on the last Friday of the term. Remember it's not how much the

children bank just about doing it every week. For those that are not aware, our two bankers "Holly"

and "Tia" are in the CHOICE room every Friday from 8.30am to 9.00am. Please come and check it

out. Also, if you already bank with ANZ and looking to top up your mortgage or get a new

mortgage (minimum $50k) please come and see me (Rebecca - ANZ) in the Choices room on

Friday mornings as Waitakiri School benefits from each draw down as part of the Olympic

School Programme.

Community Survey – Life in Christchurch

From today, we are seeking feedback from as many people as possible, from all

communities throughout the city, including our youth, disability and ethnic communities,

about what it is like to live in Christchurch.

Life in Christchurch is an online Community Outcomes survey aimed at all

Christchurch residents. The link to the survey is now on our website –

https://www.research.net/r/chchlife

Please feel free to provide feedback and share this link with your networks. The

information gathered from this study will help inform future planning and policy

decisions as we develop Christchurch into a great place where people want to be –

both now and in the future.

The results of the study will be presented to the new Council as part of their induction

in November this year and will also be available on our website.
