Our Scottish Heritage

JOHN KNOX (c. 1512-1572) was the outstanding leader of the Scottish reformation. As a schoolmaster and clergyman, he was raised in a Scotland that was religiously immersed in Roman Catholicism. The Scots were ready for a reformation of the Kirk that would result in a purer and simpler faith. After experiencing and embracing the religious and political views of John Calvin in Geneva, Knox returned to Scotland in 1559. The Scottish Parliament commissioned him and five others to write the Scots Confession. In 1560 this confession was overwhelmingly adopted, and became the original charter of the Reformed Kirk of Scotland. By this Act, the authority of the Bishop of Rome was rejected. In addition, The Book of Order (known as Knox’s Liturgy) and the First Book of Discipline were adopted. Knox had led the Scottish Church into a reformation following the Calvinist tradition. ANDREW MELVILLE (1545-1622) was outraged when he realized the Kirk was being ruled by civilian bishops, who placed church revenues in the hands of the state. He led a successful fight to purge the Kirk of such bishops, and succeeded in establishing the rule of the Kirk through elected presbyteries. In 1575, the General Assembly of the Kirk to which Melville was a Commissioner met in Edinburgh. The Assembly appointed a committee to prepare a new constitution, subsequently embodied in the 2nd Book of Discipline adopted in 1581. Melville was the leading spirit in its preparation. Thus the Presbyterian form of Government was born. FRANCIS MACKEMIE (1658-1708) trained for the gospel ministry at the University of Glasgow, and was licensed as a Minister of the Word (clergy) of the Reformed Kirk of Scotland in 1681. Coming to America in 1683, he founded at least five churches of which we know. In 1706 MacKemie and six other clergy formed the first Presbytery in colonial America at Philadelphia. Thus the Presbyterian Church in this new country became a reality in a large degree through the efforts of this great transplanted Scotsman. Our Historic Church Now Spans Three Centuries First Presbyterian Church of Pataskala began in a barn November 11, 1837 with 19 persons meeting to arrange for worship together. The names of those who gathered are: Hall and Eliza Robertson; William and Christina Baird; Isaac and Jane Condit; Orson and Harriet Smith; Samuel S. and Peabody Atkinson; John Frayzier; James C. Condit; Joseph and Marjery Baird; and Mrs. Rebecca Niblow. They called it South Fork Presbyterian Church. Henry Little and Jonathan Cable conducted the service, while Rev. Charles Putnam was also present. They met in various places after that, most often in a schoolhouse on Old Mud Pike (Route 16). It was there that S.S. Dobbin was elected and installed as the first elder of the church. The small congregation began to think of hiring a minister of their own, choosing Timothy W. Howe. For 11 years their services were held in the old United Brethren House in Etna. They followed Rev. Howe over to South Fork Church in Pataskala and in 1841 was installed as their ordained minister. In 1852 a house of worship was finally completed in a beautiful, wooded area across the road from where the Pataskala Cemetery is now located. Final cost of the building was $800. In April 1864 the church was given permission by the Presbytery of Newark to change its name to the Pataskala Presbyterian Church. For nearly 16 years, members met at the creek bank church (nick named since it was by the creek). Then the roof began to fail and it became unsafe. Members were invited to temporarily use the Methodist Church while the now 70 member congregation made plans to build a new place of worship. During February of 1869 Jesse Horn, Timothy Cooley, and Joseph Atkinson were appointed as a building committee. They purchased a lot from Jacob Joseph for $650. The building was to be brick, 40 by 60 feet. The final cost was approx. $5,000. The new church was dedicated to God in Oct. 1870, with an inspiring service. The steeple bell arrived in 1873 and rings for worship to this day. After 37 years of dedicated service, Rev. Timothy Howe retired due to poor health. Since then, First Presbyterian has seen many exciting and important changes and additions. In 1917, the basement was remodeled for Sunday School rooms and social hall. In 1922, the church was remodeled to accommodate the pipe organ purchased by the Berean Sunday School class. In 1929, the stone shaped facade was put on the church. In 1969, the educational wing and social hall were added; and the chancel and choir loft were remodeled. Recent renovations include: the elevator, heating and cooling systems, Nursery Room and Berean Room; in 1996 the Pipe Organ was rebuilt for $46,100; in 2003 new windows, $16,000; in 2004, sanctuary pews $40,000; in 2006, main entry and new C.E. ceiling lights; in 2007 a new walkway entry and new kitchen, $60,000; in 2009, the Diane Kasler Activity Center (basement area) $23,000, expansion of the Memorial Gardens (Mauger Eagle Scout Project) $3,700.; in 2010 improved sanctuary lighting $5,000; and in 2013 a new roof was put on the educational wing and new furnaces for $14,000. In 2017 the Organ was updated for $29,000 and the piano for $4,000;

“A Hymn of Praise” Written by Hugh J. Hughes

for the Anniversary Sunday of the Pataskala First Presbyterian Church

Dear Old First Church--Beloved by all,

For deeds done in His name,

Responding nobly to His call,

Throughout the years the same;

Her past achievements we adore,

And for her future ask

That God will bless her as of yore

With strength for every task.

Dear Old First Church - Thy Saints in Heav’n

Rejoice with us today

And glory in what thou hast given

To help us on our way;

Oh! Thou the leader of our host,

Accept the praise we bring.

And keep us always at our post,

And to thy precepts cling.

Dear Old First Church -- Lead on, lead on

To greater heights for God,

Cease not thy work, though we be gone

And sleep beneath the sod;

Thy King is Jesus and he lives

To bless and prosper thee;

Dear Old First Church we pledge anew

Our service full and free.

PRAYER of PREPARATION: O Lord God, who has given us a noble inheritance in the Scottish name; enable us to hold fast the faith which Thou gavest unto our fathers, and hast preserved through centuries of suffering and trial. Keep us true to the vision of life Thou hast revealed in Thy dear Son; lead us in the paths of uprightness and truth; and grant that, guided always by Thy Spirit, and trusting in Thy love, we may abide in fellowship one with another, and all in fellowship with Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

that every thought, word, and deed may be acceptable to you, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.

GREETING AND SHARING GOD’S PEACE As God has greeted us with his peace,

so let us pass the peace of Christ to each other.

ANNOUNCEMENTS (Also See Old First News Bulletin Insert) RITUAL OF FRIENDSHIP (Please sign & pass the black pew pads) PRELUDE

Order of Worship CALL TO WORSHIP O Come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and show

ourselves glad in him with Psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of

the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land.

O come, let us worship, and fall down: and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his

pasture, and the sheep of his hand. (From the Book of Common Prayer: As Amended by the Westminster Divines A.D. 1661)

*HYMN #275 @1779 A.D. (2nd Tune) “Amazing Grace” Mic Trenor, Piper

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Confession of Sin (Adapted from Scottish Reformer John Knox’s Liturgy of 1560)

God, we have sinned against you. And yet, O Lord, as we acknowledge our sins, so also do we acknowledge you to be a merciful God, a loving God, to all who turn to you. And so we humbly ask you, for the sake of Christ your Son, to show mercy to us. Forgive the sins of our youth, and the sins of our old age. By your Spirit, O God, take possession of our hearts, so that, not only the actions of our lives, but also the words of our mouths, may be guided and governed by you. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, we pray. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON: The mercy of the Lord is certain for all who call upon the Savior, the Holy Lord Jesus. The God of mercy has provided an atonement for sin in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Give thanks and praise for this gracious provision for our benefit and blessing.

*GLORIA PATRI: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now

and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.

*AFFIRMATION of FAITH from “The Kirk” Chapter XVI, Scots Confession

As we believe in one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, so we firmly believe that from the beginning there has been, now is, and to the end of the world shall be, one Kirk, that is to say, one company and multitude of those chosen by God, who rightly worship and embrace Him by true faith in Christ Jesus. The Kirk is catholic, that is, universal, because it contains the chosen of all ages, of all realms, nations, and tongues, be they of the Jews or be they of the Gentiles, who have communion and society with God the Father, and with his Son, Christ Jesus, through the sanctification of his Holy Spirit.
