Dear SATA Members, We had a great turnout for the Fall Meeting at the Marriott Clearwater Beach Hotel! Please let us know what brought you to the meeting. Was it the location? Was it the program? Was it the scheduling of the meeting mid-week? OR all of these? This was SATA's largest attendance in quite a few years. It was great to see everyone! Several board members rotated off the board this year, Larry Beaver and Dick Christensen who we thank very much for their contributions. We welcome two new Directors: Scott Koerper, Mexichem Fluor; and Allen Price, RSC Chemical Solutions. Pierce Pillon was recognized for his two-year term as President and Dick Christensen for his three-year term as Director. The Founders Award was presented to Gary Knopeck for his many years of contributions to the aerosol industry. Gary worked at Honeywell for 35 years. During his career, Gary was involved with several of the Aerosol Associations and was a frequent speaker at SATA. He also served on SATA's Board of Directors. Gary has authored numerous technical papers, including articles in Spray Technology and holds over 35 patents. This was the third year for the Innovation Awards. The winning companies are AWP Wood Paint, Hopkins Manufacturing Corporation and Emerson. Additional details can be found on page 6. Well, my tenure as President starts now. It will be very difficult to live up to the stature of the last two presidents, Elena Badiuzzi and Pierce Pillon. They both made changes to the association that have strengthened the membership. My goal over the next two years is to continue this trend. To produce great meetings with useful content. To work cooperatively with other associations and to grow the aerosol industry. Lastly, to strengthen the SATA family and continue to attract new members to the Association. As always, member input is welcomed. I look forward to hearing from you, working with you and seeing you at our next events in March. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Please let us know what brought you to the Fall Meeting. Location? Program? Timing?

BILL AURIEMMA, President & CEO, DIVERSIFIED CPC, presented “Propellant - Past, Present and Future”. Bill presented an excellent history of propellants utilized in our industry and how to select the correct one using differentiating features and characteristics. He provided a detailed comparison of currently available propellants - hydrocarbons, NGL’s, and DME to name a few. He touched on regulatory drivers, such as VOC’s (CARP, EPA, OTC, LADCO) and retail requirements (WERCs, etc.) as some of the influences necessitating changes through the years and continuing today. Bill spoke about the aerosol associations, NAA, WAIB, and HCPA which have led the charge to work with regulators on our industries behalf, with associations such as SATA in supporting roles.

SCOTT CARPENTER, Vice-President Marketing & Partner Innovations, Formulated Solutions, spoke on “Pressurized Packaging, Beyond Sprays” about new packaging technologies, formulation and processing techniques that are broadening the scope of the possible in the world of aerosols. The presentation discussed this rapidly changing landscape and how brand owners can leverage these innovations to enhance the user experience. Website [email protected]

STEVE BENNETT, Senior Vice-President Scientific Affairs, HCPA, provided an excellent explanation of UL WERCS in his “HCPA Update” including how it and similar third-party providers came into prominence and why. WERCS was established in 1984 and acquired by UL in 2013. UL WERCS currently has 11,000 manufacturers participating with 850,000 product formulas submitted, and 25+ retailers specifying their service to vendors wishing to place products in their stores/sales channels. Steve explained how the Supplier Ingredient Review (SIR) created by HCPA is working with UL WERCS to improve overall experience and better protect the integrity of information submitted. Currently 72 issues are being addressed via this entity which is legally separate from HCPA.

DOUG RAYMOND, President, Raymond Regulatory Resources (3R), presented “Regulatory Update”. Topics covered were the questionable “scientific” data that suggests personal care emissions may be greater than those contributed by transportation. Working closely with CARB on matters such as this will hopefully curtail such reports. The CARB alternative compliance options for multi-purpose lubricants (MPL) were reviewed as were the data from the last 3 years of aerosol surveys. Personnel changes in the CARB enforcement area were laid out. Industry members presented an Aerosol 101 to the CARB personnel and it was very well received. Proactive movements by industry such as this always reflects favorably. California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC – ie “Green Chemistry”) review of the 2018 – 2020 work plan showed seven proposed product categories. If your products fall under these new categories, stay tuned for how this will affect you as the plan develops!

Doug then reviewed the OTC model rule #5, but none of the member states have adopted any portions of it yet. The EPA Ozone Standard and Canada Consumer Product regulations status and progress were discussed. Finally, the Prop 65 warning language rules and the status of the SNAP rulings were reviewed.

She provided insight into what is needed for each country to comply with the GHS system. Mae explained how the Global Harmonization System is neither "Global" nor "Harmonized". She provided a wealth of information on how to navigate through the different country’s requirements. Download a copy of her presentation off the SATA website. It will make a great reference guide.

SEAN FITZGERALD, Chairman, CAPCO, presented CAPCO's new Mist:Understood campaign. CAPCO's research found that millennials have a neutral perception of aerosols. The purpose of the new campaign is to shift their perception from neutral to positive by communicating with them using the electronic medium they prefer. 2018 FALL EDITION AWARDS

[email protected] 6 www.southernaerosol.com

After presenting 18 Distinguished Service Awards, the SATA Board of Directors has changed the name of the award to SATA Founder’s Award in honor of the original founders – Jerry Dubow, Manny Fineman, Sam Garretson, Dave Hansen, Bob Hertling, George Leist, John McMahon, and Jim Wells. Although the name has changed, the criteria remains the same “The award will be presented to an individual, group or company that has made considerable contributions to the success of SATA and the aerosol industry.”

The SATA Aerosol Innovation Awards were created based on SATA’s Mission - “To provide forums for the development and sharing of technical, regulatory and marketing information to enhance and promote the growth of the aerosol industry.” The SATA Aerosol Innovation Awards are a natural extension of our Mission by acknowledging and sharing with our membership new aerosol innovations, in the areas of Advancement in Formulation, Advancement in Regulatory Response and New Pressurized Packaging Platform. Nominations were opened to all members of SATA. Individuals could enter unlimited nominations for their own products or another company’s.
