This meeting is required by Board Rules, at which time members will hear and vote on the current Board’s recommended slate of officers and directors for the 2018-2019 year.
Members and guests are welcome to attend. The regularly scheduled monthly Board Meeting will follow. The Board of Directors recommends to the membership the following slate of Officers and Directors to serve for the 2018–2019 fiscal year:

The Board of Directors and our 50 volunteers have been very busy these last several months. We are continually flooded with donations of books, DVD's, CD's and audio books. Our end of the month 1/2 Price Sales continue to attract new buyers from surrounding areas. Shop revenue remains strong and total revenue-to-date approaches $58,500, with two months to go in our fiscal year! The Board will continue awarding scholarships to library staff members who wish to further their education in library science. Library Director Patricia Crosby and her talented staff continue to assist us with our heavy work load. Book Shop Coordinator, Linda Atkinson is training several new volunteers to work in the Book Shop or in the upstairs workroom pricing books and preparing them for sale. These new volunteers are much appreciated! All is well at the library including the air conditioning!

I hope you are all enjoying your summer!
We've been busy with our Endless Exploration! Summer Reading Challenge for all ages that was from June 9 - July 28, 2018. Our youth services programs have been bringing in record-setting attendance numbers--over 200 for many programs including Create-ure Feature and SLIME! and topping over 350 for John Abrahm's Animal Magic: Music, Magic & Animals. Not only are these programs fun, they are reaching new members of our community who we see visiting each program week after week, creating and strengthening partnerships with other local community organizations and businesses like the San Diego Children's Museum and our Read Local, Shop Local business partners. These programs also fulfill a myriad of educational purposes, focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and STEAM (adding
Art to this mix) that engages kids of all ages to apply these talents in creative ways. Participation numbers for each of the age categories of the SRC have also set new library records with over 1,000 kids and close to 400 adults accepting the Summer Reading Challenge!
Co-sponsored programs between our Youth and Adult Services departments have also been very successful. An especially popular program called Dads and Donuts brought together another element of the population, adult male caregivers, to the library where we engaged them and their young charges with Escondido Public Library's VR (Virtual Reality) and 3-D printing technologies. Stay tuned for upcoming programming using both of these maker technologies for all ages.
Our customer services staff has been busy teaching the community how to use our self-check machines and our new automatic book sorter. The response has been positive as the community engages in the latest library technology that allows staff to get materials out on the shelves and to the public quicker and more efficiently.
Several of our staff members attended the ALA (American Library Association)'s annual conference in New Orleans in June. This opportunity to network with library and non-library professionals engaged in library work and theory is a tremendous professional development experience. Staff returned to Escondido refreshed and energized to continue implementing new technology, thought-provoking programs, and excellent customer service.
The Strategic Plan also kept all of our staff involved and busy for the past six months. This Plan engaged all levels of the local community, including non-library users, to envision a 5 year plan and vision for what the Escondido library should look like and do for its community. This document can be read on the library's website at https://library.escondido.org/strategicplan.aspx.
Thanks again to our staff (see opposing page) for all their continued hard work. Looks like they were happy to do it!
And thank you, Friends of the Library, for your membership and continued support! Please take a look at our Library calendar on our website to see what other interesting, fun, and engaging programming is happening at your Escondido Public Library!

Thanks to a Great Staff for a Very Successful Summer Reading Program!
Adult Services Monica Barrett, Sr. Librarian
Adult Services has enjoyed huge success with the 2018 Summer Reading Challenge. Participation has more than tripled this year with 345 adults, ages 18+. The generosity of the Friends allowed EPL to reward $40 in gift cards and prizes each week, and provided for the grand prize Kindle Fire with Amazon gift card. The picture below is of SRC winners in the Adult Summer Reading program.
Adult Services and the Pioneer Room look forward to a Fall season that will bring back 2nd Saturday Concerts, have the first-ever adult wellness fair, a series of new craft classes and an historical photography exhibit in the Pioneer Room.

Youth Services Activities, Dan Wood, Senior Librarian The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge Endless Exploration has seen record breaking numbers across all categories! To date we have had 150 babies, 1,085 children, 279 teens, and 381 adults register to participate in the summer reading challenge. Youth Services program numbers have been huge. Children and families got up close and personal with reptiles, spiders, and birds with a visit from EcoVivarium of Escondido and experienced the magic of animals and reading with John Abrams Animal Magic.
STEAM programs returned again this year. Kids created and launched foam rockets.
They brought out their inner artist and scientist with sharpie art that utilized rubbing alcohol to create masterpieces on cloth napkins.
Create-ure Feature featured kids designing and creating creatures of their own. They told youth services staff about their creatures, where they lived, what they ate, and how they survived in the world.
And then there was, SLIME! Our biggest and most popular summer reading program to date. We had an astonishing 415 in attendance to make slime.
Teens got to experience VR and 3D printing technology and play games at Gameology, play CLUE in Space, design their own t-shirts with screen printing, discuss a wide variety of books that feature exploration, and sing their hearts out at a singing talent show. It has been an inspiration and pleasure to see the community engaging and participating so fulling in the summer reading challenge. The Friends of the Library help to support all of the amazing things that we do at this library.

Technology & Support Services, Katy Duperry, Senior Librarian Technology and Support Services has had a very busy couple of months! Some highlights:
Escondido Public Library won the California Library Association PR Excellence (marketing) Award for the print materials created for our Read Local, Shop Local campaign! Marketing Coordinator Nicholas Ivins will be accepting this award and presenting on what went into the campaign process at the 2018 California Library Association Annual Conference in Santa Clara, California in November. A special shout out to Nicholas Ivins for his excellent graphics work on this project, and Senior Librarian of Adult Services, Monica Barrette, for making this community partnership program such a success!
Cataloging and Acquisitions specialists Darlene Brooks and Greg Hall are learning a new software system for processing orders, doing invoices, and making the collection develop-ment process more streamlined. Kudos to them for their valiant efforts and patience as we work through the new system and train others on it!
Escondido Public Library will now be offering Blu-ray discs for check out! Thanks to Greg Hall, Monica Barrette, and Sophia Navarro on getting these into our system, processed, and ready to check out!
New technology abounds! Digital Services Specialist Gabriel Diaz runs a Virtual Reality program on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in the Collaboration Corner- come check out this cool immersive experience! Gabriel is also getting the 3D printer ready for public consumption in the fall! We will have one 3D printer running in the lobby, so patrons can see how it works and enter a raffle to win a free
3D printed object! He will also offer an introduction to 3D printing program this winter, where patrons can learn how they work and design their own nameplate to be printed!
Customer Service staff are stepping up their teamwork game! Several staff have been cross training in Adult Services and Youth Services, so they can provide assistance to other departments and gain a deeper understanding of how the divisions all work together to provide the best possible experience for our patrons.
A great big shout out to our pages: Minh Tran, Jen Webb, and Aracelli Capilla who have offered so much assistance to Youth Services during the Summer Reading Challenge, and keep that area so clean! Also, great thanks to Library Associate Africa Smith for all of her help with cleaning up the children’s nonfiction this summer! Also, our great full-time Customer Service Team has been reviewing processes and workflows and updating and streamlining them for a more productive, smoother working environment.
