DISEASE AND ILLNESS LINKED TO LIFESTYLE CHOICES

Please write down one disease or illness you can think of linked to a poor lifestyle choice.

ILLNESS IS primarily a psychological disorder

e.g. DEPRESSION

A DISEASE IS DEFINED AS... “...an unhealthy condition in a person which is caused by

bacteria or an infection"

What is a DISEASE?

What is an illness?

Cigarette smoking is the greatest single

cause of disease and premature death in the

UK.

SMOKING AND HEART DISEASE

Diseases of the heart and circulation (cardiovascular disease) kill around 208,000 people a year.

Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death and illness in the UK. Smoking causes one in eight of these deaths, and one in five premature deaths before the age of 75.

Smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are the four biggest risk factors

The majority of people who suffer

a heart attack before the age of 50 are smokers.

Heart attacks happen when a blood clot in one of the coronary arteries (coronary thrombosis) blocks off blood supply to the heart.

1) How many people fall victim to heart disease every year?

2) What fraction of these deaths are a direct result of smoking?

3) Smokers are more likely to have a heart attack under the age of…..?

5) What causes a heart attack?

4)What are the four main factors that lead to a heart attack?

Couples who smoke are more likely to have fertility problems than couples who are non-smokers…what affect could this have on relationships?

13 people die each hour as a result of

smoking!!!

LIVER DISEASE.....

When you drink alcohol, it is absorbed into the bloodstream from the stomach

All blood from the stomach and intestines first goes through the liver before circulating around the whole body.

So, the highest concentration of alcohol is in the blood flowing through the liver

The liver cells can metabolise only a certain amount of alcohol per hour. So, if you drink alcohol faster than your liver can deal with it, the level of alcohol in your bloodstream rises.

Repetitive heavy drinking can lead to inflammation of the liver and if drinking continues liver failure may occur.

“...he was told his liver was only functioning at 20% and he needed a transplant.”

“...years of heavy drinking had caused irreparable damage to Best's health.”

“The liver performs more than 400 functions needed to keep the body healthy” “Best had to wait eight

months for a suitable liver to be found.”

In July 2002, he underwent 10 hours of major surgery at the Cromwell Hospital, needing 40 pints of blood during the life-saving transplant operation.

15 000 people a

year die in the UK from ALCOHOL RELATED

DISEASES!!

The Health Risks linked to a POOR DIET

What do you think is the main related disease to poor diet?

In the UK one person is diagnosed with diabetes every three minutes and three people die from its complications every hour.

Diabetes is a common life-long condition where the amount of glucose in the blood is too high as the body cannot use it properly.

There are two types of DIABETES.....

TYPE 1 DIABETES TYPE 2 DIABETES

develops when the insulin-producing cells have been

destroyed and the body is unable to

produce any insulin

Type 2 diabetes develops when the

body doesn’t produce enough

insulin or the insulin that is produced

doesn’t work properly.

Controlled by insulin injection (self-controlled) Diet and exercise controlled

WHAT OTHER DISEASES ARE CAUSED BY A POOR DIET?

HYPERTENSION

Blood pressure between 130/80

Blood pressure of 140/90

Blood pressure of 160/100

How many people in UK suffer from Hypertension?

Name two groups of people hypertension maybe most

common in?

What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?

How can blood pressure be lowered?

HALF OF PEOPLE OVER 65!¼ MIDDLE AGED ADULTS!

People with Diabetes!Family HistoryFrom the Indian sub-continentLIFESTYLE CHOICES!

There aren’t any!

Most severe will be treated with tablets. It can be lowered through exercise and a good balanced diet. Salt and caffeine!

WHAT AFFECT DOES YO YO DIETING HAVE ON OUR HEALTH?

What are the Health Risks of Crash Diets

Mental Health Problems

Nutrition deficiency

Vital organ deficiency

Osteoporosis

Liver failure/ Kidney failure/ Heart attack

....a disease that causes the bones in your body to become extremely brittle

...iron deficiency anemia

...extreme food cravingsIrritable and depressed

During crash diets, your body eventually clues in to the fact that it is receiving a very low number of calories. As a result, your body actually adjusts its metabolism, so that it burns fewer calories in order to perform all of its necessary bodily functions. This means that it takes fewer calories for you to gain weight,

WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT!???

IMPAIRED GLUCOSE TOLERANCE

CARB CRAVINGS!!

DEPRESSION!

LUNG CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON CANCER IN THE UK, WITH MORE THAN 38,000 PEOPLE DIAGNOSED EACH YEAR. SMOKING IS THE CAUSE OF MOST CASES.
