After much looking we have found our first purchase of the year and we have found a gem. As you can see from the above form he is just a baby racing wise but already he has done two very impressive things on the racetrack and he certainly ticks the boxes for the type of horse we want to race.

Despite him being a maiden we think we have found a horse of genuine Group ability. We are not saying Group 1 as he still would have to improve to get to that level but this horse has a lot going for him and for the price he is a bet to nothing as he should easily win his purchase price back.

PLEIN CIEL is a horse by the sire MAMOOL. MAMOOL was world class and was actually very unlucky in our very own Cox Plate and is better known as the sire of our very own LUCAS CRANACH. The sire is capable of throwing explosive horses and we know the sire line works in Australia as this bred is extremely tough and hardy

From just the two starts it?s a big call to say he is a Group horse but when we pull the races apart it is obvious he has the talent and ability and thankfully he ran into a horse better than him on both occasions which has given us this opportunity to buy him

Below we have examined his races in detail to highlight why he is the right horse

1st Career Race:

Cologne over 1600m carrying 57kg

Finished 2nd

Comment: The first thing to note here is that the overall time of 98.57 is 6 lengths quicker than standard for the course and distance but the key factor her is the first 1000m is run in 65.56 ? which over the last 4 years is the 5th slowest ever first 1000m which is telling as it explains the race was run as a real sit and sprint and those closest to the lead where best suited. Degas the eventual winner has run 33.01 for the last 600m. I have clocked PLEIN CIEL running 32.78 !!! Now for a horse having his first start and up hill at Cologne that is world class ? so whilst the overall time was indicative of high class horses it?s the hidden sectionals that tell the real story

The real franking of this form though was DEGAS. DEGAS is Germany best sprinter miler and just on the weekend was the second favourite behind the Coolmore horse from England in the German 2000 Guineas. Degas was ridden horrible yet was only beaten in a photo to a very high class horse. After the weekend im told there are offers of $1.2 to $1.5 Euro which is $2,000,000 AUD plus for Degas !!

The third horse stepped out on the weekend also and was unlucky in a Listed race when running second and should have won

Group Form in Germany is stronger than Australian Group form and given so much was against him here ? I couldn?t help but marvel at his effort for a first starter. You can also tell in the run he is a big monster of a horse ( stands 16.2) and physically is still a baby but is very imposing and a stunning 10/10 on type

2nd Career Race

Hannover Cup 2000m carrying 58kg- Slow/heavy track

Finished: 58kg

Comment : sent out a hot favourite here he raced a good batch of horses but found Classic Rock just too good on the day- however if you watch closely he never gets into stride and the overall times all day indicated where on average 4 to 5 seconds ( 20 lengths plus) outside the standard time which this proves the track was on the worse side of slow and for mine the quick back up and slow track conditions told on him here.In saying that this was the quickest and best rating race on the day by some 4-5 lengths so there is still plenty of merit in the effort compared to the days other performers. The horse did sweat up badly in the pre parade and our man on the ground said the horse paraded agitated . You can see in the run the horse has sweat on his flanks and this would not have helped his manners The form from the race has been proven over night with the winner on the quick back up smashing up a very good field and is now the 3rd favourite in the German Derby and Andreas Wohler who trains the winner is of the opinion the winner will run top 4 in the German Derby no problem and that advise is good enough to suggest this run despite below expectations was better than it looked. The third horse at one stage was 3rd line of betting for the Derby also ? so there was very good depth to the race

As you can see the horse has in his two lifetime starts ranked in the top 10 performers twice on the day and both times on my ratings has ranked like a Group 3 horse. The only reason we have been able to secure the horse is the owner is very highly strung and im told emotional and when the horse hasn?t been able to win these races he has ?thrown his toys out of the cot? and accepted our offer.

PHYSICAL INSPECTION REPORT

We have had the horse inspected buy the number 1 judge on horse flesh in Europe and the comments are as follows ? Luke this horse is a stunner and exactly the type you like in Australia- plenty of muscle and shape and physically has a great big frame like Hathras did ( Hathras was a horse beaten 2 lengths in the BMW who we also brought as a maiden before unfortunately doing a tendon) ? at the same time like the sire does he has thrown medium sized bone into the horse. The horse toes in ever so slightly to be very picky but it is only being very particular to so that. He walks very smoothly and trots up fine- I saw him work this am and he moves very fluidly ? Jose rode him for us and commented ? moves extremely well- very nicely balanced but had a very good blow and the horse appears to be too pretty in condition wise. Overall I cant fault him and you should be buying him off this jackass

Our man on the ground is the number 1 man in Europe in terms of his knowledge and reputation and the thing we haven?t mentioned yet is the trainer. To say he is a hobby trainer is being very kind and to say there is improvement in the horse is the understatement of the year

Summary

In summary he ticks all the boxes- very lightly raced- has produced 2 high overall ratings and has handled a firm track along with proving he is a dynamic turn of foot horse being able to run 32.78 for his last 600m. The horse is currently second favourite for the SWISS Derby ( behind a French horse who has Group 3 placings to his name) and has today passed his vet exam. Once we get the blood tests back ( which will take a week in Germany) then we will be getting him on the next shipment which should see him arrive here late JUNE and then straight into work with Darren.

As in most things we have got some luck with this fellow as the owner doesn?t know how good the horse is ( despite the trainer pleading with the owner not to sell) and im very confident this type of horse would after his next run or 2 end up in Hong Kong as a Million dollar AUD type of horse as he is the genuine article with real upside. The horse will improve out of sight under Darrens care and yet the horse is versatile enough to be competitive over our shorter courses. Confidence levels on this horse for mine are 10 out of 10 and I can highly recommend him and think he will be the perfect horse for newer first time owners as I think he will come here and could easily win his first 5-6 races back to back and recoup that

Given the horses ability I believe the horse can arrive here and easily win a large chunk of his purchase price back in the first preparation and can highly recommend this horse to anyone who wants a untapped group class of horse
