The concepts of the digital twin and digital thread have been around for decades. Industry insiders

generally agree they should be joined to maximize their value and justify the effort of keeping them

current—clear and concise, for example, and valid. Yet the gaps between them seem not to be closing.

It's always awkward to insert definitions into an article this early. Given the misinformation about digital

twins and digital threads that's “out there,” however, good definitions reveal key differences between

digital twins and digital threads, why they must be joined, and why doing so is a persistent challenge.

The digital twin is a virtual representation of an enterprise's product, or any physical asset, e.g.,

manufacturing equipment, one twin for each unique physical product and all that defines it. The digital

twin represents the product as of a specific point in time and from then on through the end of the asset’s

lifecycle.

A digital thread is the communication framework that allows a continuous data flow and integrated

views of an asset's digital twin. As an integral part of the digital twin, the digital thread gathers, secures,

and maintains information about the configuration of the asset or product. This is why the digital thread

should be part of the digital twin; it is what ensures that the digital twin is always accurate.

A digital thread's lifecycle begins when its accompanying digital twin is conceived and extends through

the end of usable life of that product.

Information in the both digital twin and the digital thread is holistic—end-to-end within itself as well as

connected to the product's environment via factory and other networks of sensors and the Internet of

Things (IoT).

Digital twins are ubiquitous. By whatever name (or even no name), there are thousands of them in every

business unit. In even small enterprises, there are probably tens of thousands of them. As LNS Research

recently observed, digital twins “are found throughout the asset lifecycle, from design and engineering

to operations, and across the value chain from demand forecasting to planning and scheduling to

distribution.”*

Both the digital twin and the physical product it represents are directly affected by design validations,

minor modifications, last-minute changes, material substitutions, changes in warranty agreements,

revised regulations, and much else, which can be tracked in the digital thread and made visible in the

digital twin.

The specifics of digital twins and digital threads differ widely, of course, but many of their underlying

considerations are similar; both are nourished many of the same information flows, especially if they are

enabled with PLM.

A digital twin without a digital thread is an orphan, disconnected from the decisions and processes that

impact it. Whether the product is a drill bit or an airliner, its virtual representation will undoubtedly

struggle to be complete without a digital thread. When information flows between them are

synchronized and unimpeded, every business unit gains…

Product designers find themselves engrossed in daily discussions of the real world versus the virtual

world. As they design new products with 3D virtual digital models in CAD they struggle to imagine

what their product ideas would be like in context of the real world. Today, the growing use of

Augmented Reality (AR) provides an innovative solution to this problem.

AR allows digital data to be superimposed on the physical world. With today’s web cameras, smart

phones, tablets, and wearables users can observe interactive views of the real world environment. AR

transforms virtual product geometry data into graphic images that can then be overlaid on those camera

views. It is a “marriage” of the virtual and the real worlds.

Benefits of AR in Product Design

AR bolsters product engineers’ ability to interact with each other as well as others. AR solutions provide

a unique opportunity during the design phase of product development when a designer needs to

frequently collaborate with a colleague or with other engineers in the supply chain, saving time

preparing and sharing documentation. Using AR to share designs requires only a second and the design

is sharable instantly around the world.

For example, early in the design phase, the designer may wish to question the placement of a particular

product option with a co-designer colleague. That placement may be dependent upon the intended use of

the product in the field. The use of AR to view alternatives and observe how they interact with the

environment can dramatically improve the quality of feedback and reduce overall response time.

Later during the product’s detailed design phase, the engineer might need to discuss an interference

between subassemblies with a component supplier. In this case, with the use of AR the engineer can

quickly isolate the problem and allow the supplier to view the exact nature of the issue.

Another powerful AR experience can be established between design engineering and the sales and

marketing organizations of the company. Early product design work can be shared using AR, viewing

the product in the real environment of a potential customer, offering a realistic impression of the product

and its use.

PTC’s AR Workflow

PTC has taken care to provide AR in an easy to use process. The user first opens the model variant they

wish to share in Creo Parametric, Creo View, or selects it in Windchill. The user can manipulate the

model, potentially hiding or color coding components to highlight an area of interest as seen in Figure 2.

Then, using AR Design Share, the user identifies the spatial target to help place and orient the model in

the AR experience. The spatial tracker is a horizontal plane that represents the “floor” for positioning the

model (Figure 3). Finally the user publishes the view to the cloud. An email is sent to the collaboration

partner with a link to the AR experience in the cloud. When the collaborator opens the link in PTC’s

Vuforia View they see the virtual model placed at life-size scale in their environment allowing them to

walk around as though they were actually there and scale it for their examination (Figure 4).

Secure Collaboration

One of the biggest concerns when collaborating on product data, especially when sharing that data

outside the company’s firewall, is security and the protection of intellectual property (IP). PTC’s

implementation of AR is notable in that it does not share actual 3D geometric data with the collaboration

partners. No physical file is transmitted. Therefore no proprietary constraints and parametric formulas

are divulged. Rather a collaborator sees only the graphical representation of the model superimposed

into the real environment shown on their device. In addition, the AR experience can be accessed

anywhere on mobile devices and at any time since the model is hosted in the cloud.

Further security is supported by the notion that even if a person obtains the link, only the individuals in a

viewers list defined by the author of the AR experience can view the model in Vuforia View.

Summary

Augmented reality is rapidly becoming an integrated part of the design workflow enabling instant and

in-context collaboration between product design stakeholders regardless of their location. Its ability to

merge the virtual data of a product model that is still under development within the real world context

offers important benefits to the design team. CIMdata believes PTC’s implementation of AR is both

easy to use and offers a much more secure environment than the conventional norm of sharing actual

CAD data. In addition, PTC has gone the “extra mile” in prepackaging the AR experience as part of

Creo, Creo View, and Windchill at no extra cost, so the cost of entry to the AR experience is nil. PTC’s

users will surely benefit.

Xilinx to Acquire Solarflare

24 April 2019

Xilinx, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Solarflare

Communications, Inc., an Irvine, Calif.-based privately-held company. Solarflare is a leading provider

of high-performance, low latency networking solutions for customers spanning FinTech to cloud

computing. The acquisition will enable Xilinx to combine its industry-leading FPGA, MPSoC and

ACAP solutions with Solarflare's ultra-low latency network interface card (NIC) technology and Onload

application acceleration software, to enable new converged SmartNIC solutions, accelerating Xilinx's

"data center first" strategy and transition to a platform company.

Xilinx and Solarflare have been collaborating on advanced networking technology for the last two years,

with Xilinx becoming a strategic investor in 2017. The two companies recently demonstrated their first

joint solution – a single-chip FPGA-based 100G SmartNIC, processing 100 million packets per-second

receive and transmit, all at less than 75 watts.

"The Solarflare team has worked very closely with Xilinx on next-generation networking technology

and business collaboration since Xilinx became a strategic investor," says Russell Stern, chief executive

officer, Solarflare. "Our shared vision for the future of data center and cloud computing and the

The acquisition is expected to close in Xilinx's second quarter of fiscal year 2020, following regulatory

Capgemini enters partnership with Autodesk

Forge Certified Systems Integrator Capgemini announced they are entering into a partnership agreement

with Autodesk to deploy Reflect IoD, a comprehensive BIM platform built on Forge. The new platform

for building and infrastructure operators natively integrates 1D to 3D, point cloud, geographical

information, and IOT data while offering value-added services to improve operations and maintenance.

The agreement is a step toward meeting the ever-growing needs of enterprises for standardized

Delegation of French Dassault Systemes due in Armenia to discuss joint projects

At the invitation of the President of Armenia, a delegation of the French Dassault Systemes company

will visit Armenia. The delegation will comprise the Vice President of the company Christian Nardin

In the framework of his working visits to France in November 2018 and February 2019, President

Armen Sarkissian held meetings with the leadership of the company and proposed to look into the

Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence Division Breaks Ground on New Center of Excellence in

Greater Detroit

Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division announced today it has broken ground on the

construction of a new expansion project on a 5-acre site in Novi, MI. Slated for completion in the Fall of

2019, the 88,000 sq. ft. building will house a technology showroom, a technical training center and a

15,000 sq. ft. laboratory and calibration hub. The two-story office area will have glass walls and

windows presenting an exceptional view of the nearly 11,000 sq. ft. Hexagon showroom and

demonstration area from both levels. Expanding Hexagon's presence in the Midwest, the Center of

Excellence will serve as a cornerstone to support advanced manufacturing in the region. Hexagon will

SIMalliance Reports Continued Strength of Global SIM Market in 2018 with Estimated 5.6 Billion

Shipments and Gives First View of eSIM Volumes

SIMalliance, the non-profit association which represents the global SIM industry, confirms that SIM

unit shipments remained at unsurpassed volumes in 2018, with an estimated 5.6 billion units shipped

worldwide. The same volume was shipped in 2017. SIMalliance confirms that its estimated total for the

SIM market in 2018 includes 114 million eSIM shipments. eSIM data was reported collectively by

SIMalliance members throughout last year.

This is the first time that SIMalliance has reported data that provides an insight into the size of the eSIM

market. The significant footprint of the organisation’s membership across the eSIM landscape results in

the data providing the first credible quantitative indication of eSIM uptake globally.

SIMalliance member data also shows that mobile network operators (MNOs), OEMs and other

stakeholders who may deploy eSIMs in large quantities, such as car manufacturers and other device

makers, have already made substantial investments to fully equip themselves to manage future eSIM

solutions in the field. This is evidenced by 230 eSIM Subscription Manager (SM) platforms which were

deployed globally at the end of 2018. eSIM SM platforms are necessary to enable remote provisioning

and lifecycle management of an eSIM product and the role of MNOs in particular in delivering these

platforms and services has been critical in enabling broad connectivity across the IoT ecosystem.

Western Europe. In some Asian countries, shipments were adversely impacted by macro-economic

factors. In India, for example, 2018 was a year of consolidation in the mobile telecoms market, naturally

affecting demand for SIM products. Equally, the relatively high pre-paid market in Indonesia meant

volumes were affected by the introduction of regulation related to ID verification.

SIMalliance also reports that in 2018 the latest generation of Triple SIM and 4G SIMs accounted for

93% of all of its members’ shipments worldwide, compared to 90% in 2017.

Spatial and Continuous Composites Announce Strategic Partnership

Spatial Corp., a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, announces its strategic partnership with Continuous

Composites, a pioneer in the area of continuous-fiber 3D printing using a moldless, out-of-autoclave

(OoA) composite manufacturing process. Continuous Composites is using Spatial’s SKDs in the

development of this process.

Composite materials are far superior to metals from a strength-to-weight ratio; however, they are

typically only found in high-end applications due to the cost of traditional composite manufacturing

processes. Continuous Composites’ revolutionary continuous-fiber 3D printing (CF3D™) process uses

an industrial robot to print with dry fibers, impregnated with resin in situ, removing the need for

expensive molds and capital equipment such as autoclaves and ovens.

Continuous Composites’ CF3D process starts with high-performance continuous fibers such as

aerospace-grade carbon fiber, glass fiber, or Kevlar. During the printing process, the fiber is

impregnated with a rapid-curing thermoset resin inside the print head rather than using costly prepreg

fibers (fiber material pre-impregnated with resin). An industrial robot controlled by Continuous

Composites’ CF3D software creates the needed print head motion while the impregnated fiber is pulled

through the print head. The wet fiber is then cured using a high-intensity energy source (e.g. UV, heat,

etc.), instantaneously resulting in a true 3D composite part.

“Our CF3D process enables true 3D printing, moving beyond the traditional stacking of 2D layers to

create the final product. As a result, we needed innovative software to drive our patented CF3D

leader in both the financial services and technology industries, Mr. Callahan retired from the global bank

in December 2018. Previously, he held senior management positions at Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse

and IBM.

At Citigroup, Mr. Callahan managed a complex set of businesses and services spanning more than 100

countries, a multi-billion dollar operating budget and critical systems infrastructure including the bank’s

cybersecurity initiatives. He most recently led a top-to-bottom transformation of operations and

technology, helping move the global bank from a collection of independent and dispersed entities into a

lean, fully integrated enterprise. Mr. Callahan also established globally consistent technology standards

and governance, and migrated critical functions to an integrated, managed, shared services model.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Callahan spent 12 years at IBM, where he held a number of management

positions, including director of strategy for IBM Japan.

Mr. Callahan currently serves on the boards of Tata Consultancy Services LTD and several private

companies. He also serves on the board of the American Red Cross Greater New York Region, business

committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and is a fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. Mr.

Callahan holds a bachelor’s in history from Manhattanville College where he serves as Chairman

Emeritus.

Oracle Media Days: A Winning Cloud Apps Strategy, Cloud Security, and Innovation 2 May 2019

Oracle CEO Mark Hurd on May 1, 2019 spoke to reporters at Oracle Media Days about how the

company has taken the pole position in the business cloud apps race. He said Oracle will continue to

build on its gains in the cloud market through the holistic suites it offers as an alternative to point

solutions, and as a company with a history of providing technology both on-premises and through the

cloud.

He also said Oracle is proving popular with customers by offering emerging technologies such as

artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain as features in existing technologies rather than

as separate products.

According to Hurd, Oracle will continue benefiting from its legacy customers’ migration to the cloud—a

process that is likely to play itself out for a number of years—and by taking market share from smaller

vendors who either no longer support their products, or don’t have a clear cloud migration strategy.

“The business apps sector is highly fragmented, but Oracle is growing faster than the market and we are

well-positioned to take the lion’s share,” he said.

Hurd said customers will benefit greatly by moving to the cloud, which will allow them to spend more

on innovation. “B2B tech is trying to take care of its technical debt it’s built up over the last few decades

and trying to clear out its technical debt that’s evolved in its hardware, software, configurations and data

center,” he said.

from reporters in the room.

Driving Growth in the Cloud

During a panel discussion featuring a number of Oracle cloud apps customers, Norman Fray, SVP and

Chief Accounting Officer for workforce solutions company TrueBlue, said that his company uses cloud

technology to help drive revenue growth.

“Part of the growth strategy for our RPO, our recruitment process outsourcing, is going global,” he said.

“Customers are saying that it’s great that you satisfy us in North America, but we need you to help with

staffing around the world. One of the reasons we chose Oracle is that we know that you’ll take us

wherever we need to go around the world. This will certainly enable our growth.”

In response to being asked whether the cloud enables innovation, he said, “That’s a resounding yes.”

The Threat Landscape and Oracle’s Trusted Security Strategy

Edward Screven, Oracle chief corporate architect, explained why cloud vendors like Oracle will be key

to defending corporate and personal data. “Government and businesses can’t be expected to out-innovate

cyber-attackers on their own,” he said. “That’s our job. We can build data centers and secure data at

scale more efficiently than any individual customer.”

He noted that “AI and machine learning in the Oracle Cloud can detect and automate responses to

unusual activities, helping protect customers from internal and external threats.”

“We can patch with zero downtime, and this is fundamentally different to what is offered by other cloud

vendors,” he added.

“Oracle is a security company and always has been,” he said.

The Future is Autonomous

Andrew Mendelsohn, EVP, Database Server Technologies, Oracle, and Steve Daheb, SVP, Oracle

Cloud, spoke about the Oracle Autonomous Database.

"Emerging technologies are permeating every aspect of life,” Daheb said. “We’re seeing self-driving

cars, we’re seeing precision medicine, we’re seeing smart cities. We’re at a tipping point where

enterprises are starting to outpace consumers in the adoption of emerging technology.”

Andy Mendelsohn noted that “If you talk to CIOs and CTOs today, they’ll all tell you that we’re

transforming to be a data-driven enterprise—100% will tell you that. But if you go on-prem, they have

data all over the place. Their data scientists can’t find the data, they don’t know where it is, they don’t

know how to move it to where it’s useful. That’s something we address with our autonomous database.

They’ll have a metadata catalog that shows where the data is, and they just want to run some analysis on

it. They don’t want to do the plumbing. They just want to do something useful with the data.”

Kyle York, VP, Product Strategy, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Rahul Patil, SVP, Software

CENIT in the 1st quarter 2019

During the first three months, CENIT group generated sales revenues of EUR k 41,238 (prior year: EUR

k 40,934/0.7%). Sales revenues in CENITs consulting and services segment increased by 0.7% to EUR

k 12,639 (prior year: EUR k 12,553). Sales of third-party software increased by approx. 1.8% to EUR k

25,136 (prior year: EUR k 24,694). Sales proceeds from CENIT's proprietary software decreased from

EUR k 3,616 to EUR k 3,401 (-5.9%).

The gross profit (operating output less cost of materials) amounted to EUR k 20,814 (prior year: EUR k

21,509), representing a decrease of -3.2%. CENIT achieved EBITDA of EUR k 2,306 (prior year: EUR

k 2,153/7.1%) and EBIT of EUR k 844 (prior year: EUR k 1,428/-40.9%). Results per share were EUR

0.07 (prior year: EUR 0.12).

Orders Development

During the first three months, the group-wide order intake totaled EUR k 48,940 (prior year: EUR k

53,505). On 31st March 2019 orders in hand amounted to EUR k 61,099 (prior year: EUR k 58,048).

Asset and Financial Situation

On the balance-sheet date, equity capital totaled EUR k 39,411 (31 Dec. 2018: EUR k 39,102),

accounting for an equity ratio of 38.7% (31 Dec. 2018: 49.4%). On the balance-sheet date, bank deposits

and liquid assets totaled EUR k 27,268 (31 Dec. 2018: EUR k 18,041). The operative cash flow was

EUR k 9,989 (prior year: EUR k 13,929).

Employees

On 31st March 2019, CENIT group employed 747 staff (prior year: 758). Group-wide personnel costs

Xilinx Reports Record Revenues Exceeding $3 Billion For Fiscal 2019 24 April 2019

Xilinx, Inc. today announced record revenues of $3.06 billion for fiscal year 2019, up 24% from the

prior fiscal year. Revenues were $828 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2019, up 4% from the

prior quarter and up 30% year over year.

GAAP net income for fiscal year 2019 was $890 million, or $3.47 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net

income for fiscal year 2019 was $892 million, or $3.48 per diluted share. GAAP net income for the

March quarter was $245 million, or $0.95 per diluted share. Non-GAAP net income for the March

quarter was $242 million, or $0.94 per diluted share.

The Xilinx Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.37 per outstanding share of

common stock payable on June 3, 2019 to all stockholders of record at the close of business on May 16,

2019.

Way back in 2014, we were requested by ZWSOFT Corporation to consider porting our applications to

the ZWCAD platform. We did try at that time and found too many missing Lisp functions and errors in

execution. It was not worth out time and we did not proceed further.

Circa 2018 December, and we gave the platform a try again. Indeed, in the 5 years since 2014, the

ZWCAD platform has improved, and we found the porting process nearly as painless as moving our

products to BricsCAD in 2011.

So, here we are, offering our products on three platforms - AutoCAD, BricsCAD and ZWCAD. The

choice is yours.

If we were to recommend the best platform for your CAD work, indeed it is BricsCAD. As BricsCAD

distributor in India, we do not sell and will never sell ZWCAD, but, in as much as our products are

concerned, we are happy to support ZWCAD for those users who are already using ZWCAD.

V20 of GeoTools & CADPower are now available for public download. The ZWCAD version also is

available but not yet publicly on our site. We expect that to be in place in a week or two. If you wish to

try it out right now, do let me know.

V20 of GeoTools & CADPower is compatible with AutoCAD 2020, the latest release and continues to

maintain compatibility with all lower versions until 2012. It may work on AutoCAD versions lower than

2012 as well but that is not supported by us.

Strengthening some of the mini-verticals we have chosen with GeoTools, like the Mining, Geology,

Civil, Rail and Transmission Tower Design tools continues to dominate our priorities and focus in

GeoTools development. This will remain one of our thrust areas in the V20 life-cycle as well.

In CADPower, we will focus more on time-saver tools in the areas of quantity calculation, Excel data

export / import, measurements and annotations. The focus is to get the most output from your

engineering drawing.

Incorporating new features normally only found in MES solutions, WORKPLAN 2020.0 is now placing

itself as the main tool for centralising a company’s data to improve production management, including

machine events, monitoring, CMMS, CAM supervision, workflow, and part traceability.

Brand Manager Christophe MAS says: “WORKPLAN is the first ERP system to integrate MES

functions as standard, putting it firmly as the backbone of a company, combining sales and production

management, as well providing workshop supervision in real time.”

The new WORKPLAN 2020.0 integrates internet solutions for job time tracking on the world wide web,

including clock-in/out time tickets at the start and end of the working day, along with time spent on both

productive and non-productive activities. This avoids the need for additional time-consuming data input.

New user interface for stock and program management

Christophe MAS says not all companies managing wood or steel panel-type materials have the capacity

or desire to set up a complete management system. “The latest release of WORKPLAN offers a simple

and efficient stock management solution for them, including aspects such as stock reception/withdrawal,

inventory, scrap management and traceability.”

The system is even more time efficient when interfaced with Hexagon’s CAM programming software

ALPHACAM. As soon as the program is validated, data reporting in WORKPLAN, and information

about panels and plates, is all completed in a few mouse clicks.

Activity Basket

WORKPLAN 2020.0 introduces an ‘Activity Basket’ which performs a variety of functions. “When

several tasks from different projects are performed simultaneously within a single production operation,

such as 3D printing, heat treatment, punching, or laser cutting, it’s difficult to monitor and assign real

cycle times and materials to each project without causing issues with job reports,” he says.

“Now, when preparing production, users can create a basket of operations grouped by service, and

manage all cost distribution according to their individual needs.” The supervision window allows

consolidation of all pending, in-progress, or finished baskets and programs, either by operator or service.

And information is available on real time progress, documentation, and the number of components

produced.

New QuickBooks Interface

The new release of WORKPLAN features an improved interface to connect with the Enterprise and

Online version of QuickBooks accounting software. All customer and supplier invoices data are swiftly

transferred, along with full company records.

Cabinet Vision Interface – Labour Import

It is now possible to import the full list of manufacturing operations from a Cabinet Vision project into a

WORKPLAN quotation, incorporating the expected time based on the Bid Center’s rate tables.

In conclusion, Christophe MAS says the new and enhanced functionality further increases performance

for all project-based companies in the aerospace, automotive, mechanical, sheet metal and woodworking

industrial sectors. “WORKPLAN 2020.0 enables users to accurately manage and analyse the entire

JOG POINTS IN ORDINATE DIMENSIONS

When manipulating ordinate dimensions, you will now see additional controls that allow you to

reposition jogs.

DRAWING VIEW RENDER MODE

You can now set the render mode used in drawing views in Onshape. By default, the render mode will

be set to "Best performance" on all new drawings, but can be set to "Best quality" if you want to favor

quality over performance. Drawing views created prior to this update will be set to "High quality," but

can be changed. This improvement, combined with some other performance improvements, has led to a

significant decrease in drawing load times as well as the time it takes to generate drawing views.

LARGE ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE

The performance of large assemblies has been improved with this update. The most noticeable change is

the decrease in time it takes to open a large assembly that is referencing many Part Studio tabs. In the

past, this involved pulling in each Part Studio in a serial process, but with this update, that process is

now done in parallel.

DETAIL PANE IMPROVEMENTS

Improvements have been made to the Detail Pane to make it easier to use. Now when you select a

Document from the Documents page, you can choose to view the "Details" or the "Share Details."

PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENTS

ADD COMMENTS TO PAST RELEASES/OBSOLETIONS

You can now add comments to past releases or obsoletions.

ENTERPRISE IMPROVEMENTS

USING PROJECT ROLES AS APPROVERS OR OBSERVERS

When creating a release candidate, you can now use Project Roles for the Approver or Observer fields.
