Forty years have passed since the founding of PLMA.What is our industry’s future? Will it be glowing andprosperous as commentators predict? PLMA’s 2019Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference celebratesthe association’s birthday with a look at the past, the present and the future.

The year was 1979. Inflation reached 20%. Retailerssearched for a way to help consumers meet their

shopping needs. In France, Carrefourinvented black-and-white genericsand American supermarkets and drug chains saw a solution to theirproblem. At the Ramada Inn nearO’Hare, retailers and manufacturersjoined together and PLMA’s first trade show was held.

Nearly a decade went by before the next major steps took place.

In Canada, Loblaws demonstrated how creative and successful store brands could be while, in theUS, Walmart launched Sam’s Choice Cola and thebattle with national brands was on.

Kroger, Safeway, Publix and A&P soon joined the fight on the supermarket side while CVS andWalgreen’s took the private label lead amongdrugstores. PLMA’s annual trade shows grew biggerand bigger as more and more manufacturers openlydeclared their willingness to make store brands.

As the year 2000 opened, new retailers like Trader Joe’s, Costco and Whole Foods moved private label to new levels of quality and assortmentand drove consumer acceptance to record heights.

Today, we know that e-commerce is changing everyone’s thinking aboutretailing as bricks-and-mortarattempts to stay relevant. We know, too, that new generations ofshoppers, led by millennials, aremodifying lifestyle and eating habits in existence for more than a hundred years.

For many in the private label industry, the past is ancient history with no lessons to be learned. For others, the future is too far away and beyondtheir imagination. PLMA’s 2019 Annual Meeting &Leadership Conference brings the past and future together with the present and offers a unique analysis of where we are going…whether we like it or not.
