Originally from Cole Camp, the Meyers, who became best friends before they reached their teens and have been mar- ried for 46 years, moved to Sedalia more than four decades ago, when Wanda began her 30-year career as a teacher in the Sedalia school district. After Jim returned from serv- ing in Vietnam, he operated a service station in east Sedalia for 33 years. The couple have two daugh- ters and two grandchildren, and as part of the congregation at Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church, Jim and Wanda Meyer have also devoted countless hours to their church family over the years. Whether singing with the choir or help- ing prepare for a rummage sale, the couple is always ready and willing to put the needs of others first. Wanda is in her 45th year of teaching Sunday school and Bible school classes and is one of the coordinators of the church’s Women of the ELCA group, while Jim serves on the church council, property and memorial committees and pre- viously was on the finance committee. Although they have been active volunteers for Christ & Trinity for many years, retire- ment has allowed the Meyers more opportunities to con- tribute to other charitable en- deavors throughout the community. “Of course everybody said in our retirement years we wouldn’t know what to do, we’d have too much time on our hands and we’d get on each other’s nerves,” Wanda said. “But we’ve been married 46 years and the best years are our retirement years. We’ve had more fun together.” In addition to his work for the church, Jim serves on the board for Meals on Wheels and volunteers once a month at Open Door. When Wanda is not substi- tute teaching, her time is split among serving on the board for the Liberty and Tambo Apart- ments, working in support of various community causes through the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers’ sorority and serving as fellowship chairman of the Community Retired Teachers Association. She also participates each year in the Relay for Life, and has previ- ously served nine years on the Sedalia Public Library Board. “It’s been a busy time. We’ve got to learn to say no, but that’s hard to do, because there’s just so many things you want to do,” she said. Wanda said the couple’s faith plays a major role in mo- tivating them to give their time to help others, but volunteering is also a rewarding experience in itself. “You do it because you want to help someone, but when you help, it seems like the blessings come back to you,” Wanda said. “It’s such a joy to reach out and help some- one, and the people of Sedalia are very appreciative.” “It’s a lot of fun, too,” Jim added. Along with the chance to give back to the community, the couple views their volun- teer service as a fulfilling way to live as an example of their beliefs. “We’re not preachers. We try to be examples,” Wanda said. “The best thing to do is live by example. It’s very ful- filling.” Another motivation for their volunteer service was the op- portunity to spend more time together and with others, both those who benefit from their work and other volunteers. Wanda said volunteering pro- vides a chance to really get to know people and build rela- tionships that make life richer. While the Meyers are able to find some time to relax, enjoy retirement and visit their family, it’s never long before they return to serving their church and community, and they have no intention of cut- ting back on their volunteering any time soon. “The community gave to us, so we love to give back to them,” Wanda said. “I don’t think our lives would be fulfilled just sitting at home,” said Jim. Volunteering a passion for Jim and Wanda Meyer Matthew Steingraber Jim and Wanda Meyer contribute countless hours volunteering with Christ & Trinity Lutheran Church and other organizations across the community.

Preventing PrescriptionMedicine Abuse

NAPS)—According to the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, one in five teens has abused prescription drugs. The Partnership for a Drug-Free America says 70 percent of people who abuse prescription drugs getthem from their home, their friends or their family. Here are some ways toprotect your family.

What You Can DoThe Partnership points out that parents have more influence over their

child than friends, music, TV, the Internet and celebrities.Kids who learn about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents,

the organization adds, are up to 50 percent less likely to use than those whodo not.

You can help your teen stay safe and make healthy choices, it says, by:• Talking and listening regularly.• Being directly involved in your child’s everyday world.• Making it clear that you do not want him or her drinking or using

drugs.• Setting limits. In addition, according to the National Youth Anti-Drug Media

Campaign, one of the most effec-tive ways to curb prescriptiondrug abuse is to safeguard med-ications.

For many families, a greatway to safeguard high-risk pre-scription and over-the-countermedications may be with a newand improved line of lockingmedicine cabinets, recessed secu-rity cabinets and lockboxes thatblend in with most home envi-ronments.

The cabinets offer an incon-spicuous and durable keyedmechanism that limits access tothe contents inside. They featurea contemporary frame in oil-rubbed bronze or satin nickel fin-ishes that can coordinate décor with popular bath and hardware fixtures.

To secure medications in other parts of the home, manufacturers offer re-cessed security cabinets that can help maximize storage space. These cabi-nets fit easily between standard stud distances and can be installed in a clos-et or behind a door or anywhere in the home where one may want to storevaluables. In addition, the cabinet door can be camouflaged with paint orwallpaper for enhanced concealment.

Q: I really loved Ann-MarieJohnson on "In the Heat of theNight." What can I see her in now,and is she married with children? --Virginia, C.A: I can't even begin to list Ann-

Marie's film and TV credits, as thereare way too many of them, but I cantell you the first series I rememberseeing her in was "Double Trouble"back in 1984. Since then, she has beenfeatured in "Hill Street Blues," "I'mGonne Get You Sucka," "In LivingColor," "Melrose Place," "AllyMcBeal," "The X-Files," "JAG," "Pur-suit of Happyness" and "NCIS." Hermost recent projects have been"Leverage" and "Fairly Legal." Ann-Marie, 51, has been married to actorMartin Grey since 1996, and they haveno children.

***Q: I was watching an older movie

called "Dracula III" with RutgerHauer as Dracula, and I could havesworn the red-haired vampire alsoplays the assistant D.A. on "Law &Order: SVU." Are they the sameperson? Also, was Mariska Hargi-tay, also of "SVU," ever on the TVshow "Freddy's Nightmares"? --Kevin B., Edmore, Mich.A: You are correct on both counts.

Diane Neal did indeed play ElizabethBlaine in the straight-to-video vampiremovie "Dracula III," starring along-side Rutger, Roy Schieder and JasonLondon. And back before Mariska wasdetective-extraordinaire Olivia Bensonon "SVU," she did indeed have a rolein one of the "Freddy's Nightmares"episodes, playing medical studentMarsha, whom Freddy -- played bythe always-scary Robert Englund --harasses on Halloween, driving her tothe brink of madness.

***Q: The TV show "The Mentalist"

shows Ashley Gable as producer. Isshe a daughter or granddaughter ofClark Gable? -- Juanita S., St. ClairShores, Mich.A: Ashley Gable, who recently took

over as executive producer of the CBScrime drama, is not related to theiconic actor, known best for his role ofRhett Butler in "Gone With the Wind."

Clark had two children: a daughterwith actress Loretta Young namedJudy Lewis, who has a daughternamed Maria, and a son with actressKay Williams named John ClarkGable, who has a son named ClarkJames and daughter named Hayley.Ashley Gable -- who, again, is no rela-tion to Clark Gable -- is a prolificwriter and producer, working on suchshows as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer,""Xena: Warrior Princess," "CrossingJordan" and "The Mentalist," to namejust a few.

***Q: Will the horror series "The

Walking Dead" be back for anotherseason? -- Donna C., Warner, Okla.A: AMC has rewarded "The Walk-

ing Dead" with a 13-episode secondseason (up from a six-episode firstseason), which is scheduled to beginSunday, Oct. 16, at 9 p.m. ET. Forthose unfamiliar with the critically ac-claimed series, it is based on thecomic-book series of the same nameand centers on a group of peoplewho've survived a zombie apocalypseand are searching across America for anew, safe home away from all thekiller zombies.

does not have the opportunity to fully investigate the credibil-ity of each advertiser appear-ing within this section. If an of-fer sounds “too good to be true”, it probably is. Proceed with caution if you are asked to send money or to give a credit card number. Proceed with caution in calling 900 phone numbers. All phone numbers pre-fixed by “900” are charged to the CALLER. Charges may be assessed on a “per minute” rather than a “per call” basis. Shooting videos on huntingtrip keeps memories alive

I was going through some old notesrecently, and I came across a 2007 interviewwith Phillip Vanderpool, who at the time was aprofessional videographer for Hunter’s Special-ties, Inc.

Vanderpool’s primary goal was to help ama-teur videographers produce turkey huntingvideos they wouldn’t be embarrassed to showtheir friends, but his advice is equally aproposto shooting hunting videos targeting otherspecies.

Vanderpool’s advice assumes that the cam-eraman and the hunter are not the same person.

It’s possible to produce a good-enough-for-who-it’s-for video with a palm-sized cam-corder. Anyone who would like to get evensemi-serious about videography should investin the best shoulder-mounted camcorder he orshe can afford.

Vanderpool warned that the biggest mistakeamateur videographers make is thinking that acamcorder is the only piece of equipmentthey’ll need. He said that making use of a tripodwhenever possible will ensure more stableshots and smoother zooms, and I couldn’t agreemore.

Vanderpool recommended practicing withand then using the manual focus feature on thecamcorder. Auto-focus is great for shootingaround-the-tree family Christmas footage andfor capturing distant scenery while on vacation.Auto focus is unsuitable for shooting huntingvideos, because it will try to focus on the near-est object in the view finder, which will seldombe what the cameraman wants the audience tofocus on.

Vanderpool stressed the need to “be sureand carry extra tapes and batteries.” It’s a rareturkey hunter who only carries one shotgunshell, and, for many of the same reasons, itshould be equally rare for a cameraman to haveonly one tape in his field pack.

It’s a proven fact that gremlins live in batter-ies. Never fall into the trap of thinking that onebattery, no matter how new or fully charged, will last through a morning of filming.

Other items Vanderpool recommendsinclude lens cleaning cloth and a plastic trashbag or some other means to protect the camerashould it begin to rain. Have some wet wipeson hand to clean up the bird before shootingstill or video “hero shots.”

And speaking of hero shots, still photo-

graphs are an important part of recording a huntno matter how well the video turns out.

Finally, Vanderpool reminded his listeners toshoot more than a kill scene. Shoot plenty ofscenery and set up shots of the hunt.

Set-up shots can be recorded either before orafter the climax of the hunt and then edited intothe right sequence. That’s how the professionalsdo it.

To obtain more realistic footage, Vanderpoolrecommended, “If you are taping for anotherhunter, set up close enough that you can com-municate with each other. The cameramanshould be able to see the same thing as thehunter even though his angle of that view willbe slightly different.”

Whenever possible, the setting of the cli-matic scene in a hunting video should be prese-lected, using knowledge of the terrain and thecurrent habits of the resident game as a guide.Under those circumstances, it’s often possibleto situate the cameraman in a natural or artifi-cial blind, but some effective videos have beenshot with both the hunter and the cameraman inthe same blind.

Lacking a blind or blinds, the hunter mustset up where he’s hidden from the approachinggame. That often means putting the cameramanin some uncomfortable positions.

That last bit of advice reminded me ofsomething Vanderpool didn’t cover in this par-ticular interview.

While getting the best possible raw footageon tape is obviously crucial, the final produc-tion of a top quality professional or amateurvideo takes place in the editing room. No ama-teur is going to have access to the sophisticatedequipment used by professionals, but there areinexpensive video-editing hardware/softwarepackages on the market.

These consumer-grade products may not becapable of turning out a video that will impressthe Outdoor Channel’s senior producer, butthey will create a video that will be the envy ofyour friends. And wasn’t that the point?
